2008 NFL draft do-over has the Saints passing on a former first-round bust
How do you define an NFL draft bust? Is it someone who doesn't last long in the league, or a player who just doesn't meet expectations? Depending on how harshly you grade draft picks, your opinion could fall between either one of those extremes.
And that brings us to former New Orleans Saints first-round draft pick Sedrick Ellis, who the team traded up to get back in 2008. Pro Football Focus analysts Max Chadwick, Dalton Wasserman, and Trevor Sikkema spun the clock all the way back for a do-over of that draft class using the benefits of hindsight. And they didn't have the Saints trading up three spots from No. 10 to pick Ellis, or even drafting him at all. Instead, they went with future three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

PFF's explanation? Surrounding Drew Brees with more weapons to start his Saints career, adding Jackson to a receiving corps that already featured Marques Colston, Lance Moore, and Devery Henderson, plus running backs Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas. The Saints also had Robert Meachem coming off of rookie-year knee surgery but Jackson would've given the receiving corps significantly more juice.
While Ellis wasn't taken in the first round of this redraft (which isn't too surprising; he washed out of the league after playing out his five-year rookie contract with the Saints), one of his teammates was. Carl Nicks was picked in the fifth round by New Orleans but in this do-over went at No. 18 overall to the Houston Texans. Here's why:
Nicks was forced to retire after just six seasons due to a MRSA infection. He was named a first-team All-Pro once, a second-team All-Pro once and a Pro Bowler twice. He earned an 83.0-plus PFF overall grade in each of his four seasons with New Orleans, and even recorded 77.0-plus PFF overall grades in each of his seasons with the Buccaneers before retiring. He is one of the best value picks in this draft.
If not for that unfortunate injury Nicks may have made his case for the Pro Football Hall of Fame just like his tag-team partner Jahri Evans did. It's a shame his career didn't last longer in New Orleans. He was one of three members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who were diagnosed with MRSA infections, two of whom had their careers cut short by it. Playing for Houston or staying with the Saints may have made a world of difference for him.

Hodge, Hanna, and Warner each played less than a season with New Orleans, combining for only nine games with the team. Whitehead was an underrated contributor for an outstanding defensive line in the early 2000s. His eight-year totals included 24.5 sacks and 40 tackles for loss. 4 bounce-back candidates on offense for Arizona Cardinals in 2025 We looked at some defensive players for the Cardinals to bounce back in 2025. Here are some offensive players who could as well. The Arizona Cardinals are in the final phase of their offseason program with two weeks remaining, one of OTAs and one of minicamp. They are hoping to bounce back from their 8-9 2024 when they lost five of their final seven games. To do so, they will need some individual players to bounce back from 2024. PFF named linebacker Baron Browning as the Cardinals' top bounce-back candidate for 2025. But there are a number of players who could use a bounce-back season, whether coming back from an injury, low production or simply not meeting expectations. We went over some bounce-back players for the defense. Here are some offensive players to watch for improvement in 2025. Cardinals bounce-back offensive candidate 1: OT Jonah Williams Williams played well when he played. The problem was that he only played in six games because he injured his knee twice. He still is their best option at right tackle and staying healthy all season would be huge. Cardinals bounce-back offensive candidate 2: QB Kyler Murray This is more about how things went down the stretch. His season stats were fine, but of his 11 interceptions, eight came in the final seven games when the Cardinals lost five of their final seven, going from 6-4 and in first place in the division to third place and 8-9. Cardinals bounce-back offensive candidate 3: WR Zay Jones Jones was re-signed to a one-year deal after he only had eight catches in 2024. His suspension to start the season really set him back, but by the end of the season, he was getting the third-most offensive snaps among the receivers. Expect him to have a much better year than eight receptions. Cardinals bounce-back offensive candidate 4: WR Marvin Harrison Jr. This might seem disingenuous because his rookie season was far from bad. It was one of the best the Cardinals have ever had from a rookie receiver. But people expected more, and it was disappointing because there were other rookie receivers clearing 1,100 and 1,200 yards. Bouncing back would mean becoming the true WR1 threat and being a guy defenses have to worry about.
