Memphis CB Kobee Minor becomes 2025's 'Mr. Irrelevant'
April 27 - The New England Patriots made Memphis cornerback Kobee Minor this year's "Mr. Irrelevant" by taking him with the 257th and final pick of the NFL draft.
Minor played three seasons at Texas Tech and one at Indiana before his one year at Memphis. In 2024, he had 38 tackles, seven tackles for loss, six passes defended, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.
"I love it," Minor said regarding his draft selection, via 98.5 The Sports Hub. "It's just fuel to my fire."
The last player taken in the draft typically makes little impact in the NFL, but one exception was San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2024. He was Mr. Irrelevant in 2022.
Last season, Alabama safety Jaylen Key earned the nickname when he was selected last by the New York Jets.
The award was created by former Southern California wide receiver Paul Salata, who was drafted 10th in 1951. That draft went 30 rounds and the process was shortened several times, ultimately shifting to seven rounds in 1994.

Adding insult to injury, that game ended in a 14-9 loss for the Giants when quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw an attempt towards Waller which would've been a walk-off touchdown. It fell one yard short of the receiver. Waller's mind may have been elsewhere, as he further indicated that nothing was going to change his mind. 'I'm just like looking at the moon,' Waller said. 'It's like early first quarter, second quarter. Nobody else would even really know that I'm thinking this. 'But I'm on the sideline like, "Yup, I'm going to finish this year to the best of my ability, but I'm definitely done playing after this year."' One week later, Waller would score his only touchdown with the Giants against the Washington Commanders. Later in that season, Waller would suffer a hand injury before going through a 'near-death experience' in a hotel room on the road. He recalled having trouble breathing, 'shaking uncontrollably' and then 'losing consciousness'. Waller played the last four games of the 2023 season while deflecting questions about his plans for his future career. However, the New York Post reported that he informed the team that he was considering retirement back in January. After months of contemplation and the Giants drafting a tight end in April of 2024, Waller announced his retirement.

Report: Magic acquire G Desmond Bane in blockbuster trade with Grizzlies
June 15 - The Orlando Magic are acquiring guard Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster deal, ESPN reported Sunday. In return, Memphis will receive guards Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap, per the report. Bane, 26, was the No. 30 overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft and spent five seasons with the Grizzlies. He has career averages of 17.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists over 29.6 minutes per game. In 2024-25, he exceeded those numbers with 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He shot 39.2 percent from 3-point-territory. A 6-foot-5 shooting guard, Bane has faced injury woes the past three seasons, limited to just 58 games in 2022-23, followed by seasons with 42 and 69 games. Caldwell-Pope, 32, will provide veteran leadership for the Grizzlies. Now 32, he was selected No. 8 overall in the 2013 draft and has two NBA title on his resume, playing for the Detroit Pistons (2013-17), Los Angeles Lakers (2017-21), Washington Wizards (2021-22), Denver Nuggets (2022-24) and Magic. He has career averages of 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 912 games. In 2024, those numbers were 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 77 games. Anthony, 25, was taken by Orlando with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2020 draft. In five seasons and 320 games with the Magic, he has averages of 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
