Haul up logistics, delivery service vehicles, too, says activist
PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) must include logistics and delivery service companies in its move to confiscate commercial vehicles driven by foreigners, says road safety activist Hisham Shafie.
Hisham said strict measures against companies and licensed operators of lorries, public service vehicles and tour buses that employ foreign drivers send a clear message that road safety is a shared, uncompromisable responsibility.
'Road user safety must be the priority. Negligent employers who put profit above the law must face strict, uncompromising action.
'I urge that this enforcement be carried out continuously together with agencies such as immigration and police nationwide against logistics firms, public transport operators and delivery companies,' he said in a statement.
JPJ has said it will begin confiscating vehicles belonging to companies and licensed operators of commercial vehicles that hire foreign drivers, effective immediately.
Senior JPJ enforcement director Kifli Ma Hassan said foreigners are not allowed to hold vocational licences such as goods driving licences or PSV licences, based on current regulations.
He said this followed an increasing trend of companies and licensed operators employing foreigners for about RM2,500 a month, and that officers could seize a commercial company's vehicle and have it forfeited in court if found guilty.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must conduct a cost-benefit analysis before considering Tasik Kenyir as a data centre and artificial intelligence hub. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government welcomes proposals to study the lake's potential given its renewable energy and water supply advantages. He noted that Terengganu is not currently considered a hot spot for data centres despite these natural resources. 'Therefore, further discussions must be held with all stakeholders to assess the suitability of Tasik Kenyir as a data centre and AI hub in terms of energy infrastructure, water, and telecommunications network that conforms to industry standards in order to attract strategic investments to Terengganu,' he said during the winding-up session of the 13th Malaysia Plan debate in the Dewan Rakyat today. Tengku Zafrul was responding to a question from Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim regarding the potential of Tasik Kenyir as a data centre and AI investment hub. He confirmed that Terengganu has sufficient energy supply through existing hydro power plants in Kenyir and Hulu Terengganu. The state also plans to develop a floating solar project and a green hydrogen hub to support future energy needs. Regarding water supply, he said the existing water treatment plant is capable of meeting demand, with a planned upgrading in place until 2027 to increase capacity. Tengku Zafrul said the telecommunications infrastructure needs upgrading as current internet speeds remain insufficient for data centre requirements. – Bernama

Ringgit Up Against Major Currencies, Holds Steady Against Greenback On Strong Trade Data
WORLD By Zufazlin Baharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The ringgit appreciated against major currencies and held firm versus the US dollar at the close on Tuesday as Malaysia posted a stronger trade performance, returning to positive growth in July. According to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the country's trade performance rebounded by 3.8 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM265.92 billion in July, the highest monthly trade value ever. At 6 pm, the local note made a marginal retreat to 4.2215/2255 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2200/2240. MITI said exports in July jumped 6.8 per cent to RM140.45 billion, the highest monthly value since September 2022, while imports edged up by 0.6 per cent to RM125.47 billion. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the latest export print suggests Malaysia's external sector is still 'fairly decent' despite having to contend with US tariffs. 'Hence, the case for a strong ringgit going forward remains intact,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, he said market players will monitor the US Federal Reserve (Fed) meeting at the Jackson Hole Symposium later this week, with chair Jerome Powell's speech this Friday in focus. 'Traders and investors appear to lean towards a possible 25 basis points cut in September as signs of a weaker US labour market have become increasingly apparent. Hence, a dovish tilt by the Fed is something that the market wants to hear. Therefore, any deviation from this view could have an impact on the currency market trajectory,' he added. At the close, the ringgit settled mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
