‘Paradise': Carmel-by-the-sea is a magical getaway in wine country
(NewsNation) — Carmel-by-the-sea in Monterey County, California, is the southernmost stop on NewsNation's 'Off Road Confidential,' a series made in association with Visit California.
According to host Gabriel Ornelas, the multifaceted town's draws include local wine, lots of shopping and premier hiking spots.
One person Ornelas spoke to told him being in Carmel-by-the-sea is being 'surrounded by everything that's good in life.'
'A real sense of community. The people, they're so generous, they're so welcoming. And there's definitely something special there,' Ornelas said.
Marin County, California, gives 'East Coast feel on the West Coast'
Ornelas got out on the trails, tried some wine and enjoyed the view from Monterey Bay — and he said locals hope others will too.
'There is such richness in culture. They're welcoming to tourists,' Ornelas said. 'They want people to come. They want people to stay and play and enjoy.'
Ornelas also made pit stops in Sacramento, Point Reyes, Half Moon Bay, Carmel and San Francisco on his journey.

Canadian-resident return trips by air fell by 19.9 percent, compared to the prior month. The overall tourism decline threatens to wipe out $12.5 billion from the American economy this year, NewsNation reported. The decline in tourism comes as tensions between the U.S. and Canada have cooled under the Trump administration, as President Trump continues to muse publicly about making Canada a 51st state of America, which Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly rejected as a nonstarter. WHO 13 NEWS – Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen is more than halfway done hiking the Appalachian Trail: an expedition that extends nearly 2,200 miles between Georgia and Maine and passes through 14 states. He made it to Duncannon, Pennsylvania, and is planning to reach New Jersey this week. He passed the 1,200-mile mark with a fresh haircut, beard trim, new shoes, and his wife's hiking poles after he snapped his. She brought them when she visited him in Pennsylvania the last week of May. Jefferson dives deep on recreation with parks, pickleball, historic pool VanVelzen is hiking with fellow veterans as a part of Warrior Expeditions, and is still receiving lots of community support along the way. He continues to see interesting wildlife and snapped photos of a white peacock and cicadas, which he notes are really loud on the trail.
