Drew Gilbert makes MLB debut with Giants
San Francisco (59-57) opened a three-game series against Washington (45-70) on Friday at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California. The Giants won the series opener, 5-0. Former Vol Drew Gilbert made his Major League Baseball debut for the Giants. He started in right field and went 0-for-4. Gilbert also made a diving catch for an out in the third inning. He is the 12th former Vol to play for head coach Tony Vitello at Tennessee to reach MLB, joining Garrett Crochet, Chase Silseth, Ben Joyce, Andre Lipcius, Trey Lipscomb, Jordan Beck, Seth Halvorsen, Chase Dollander, Blade Tidwell, Christian Moore and Chase Burns. Gilbert was selected by Houston in the first-round (No. 28 overall) of the 2022 MLB draft. He appeared in 58 games during his final season at Tennessee in 2022, totaling 11 home runs, 70 RBIs, 60 runs, 72 hits, 21 doubles, four triples, 33 walks and four stolen bases. Hull re-sign Leeds forward Gelhardt on loan
Forward Joe Gelhardt has returned to Hull City on a season-long loan from Leeds United. The 23-year-old moved to the MKM Stadium on loan during the second half of last season, finishing as the Tigers' joint-second top scorer with five goals in his 20 appearances as City secured Championship survival on the final day of the campaign. Gelhardt began with a spectacular half-volley on his debut against Queens Park Rangers at home and netted vital goals in home wins over Plymouth, Oxford United and Preston. After coming through the ranks at Wigan, the former England youth international moved to Elland Road in August 2020 and has made 57 appearances for the Whites, 35 of them in the Premier League. Bills' Brandon Beane says James Cook practice holdout was a surprise
Pro Bowl running back for the Buffalo Bills, James Cook, said he is holding out from training camp because of "business." That's the only word we've gotten from the player as his sit out has now reached five workouts. Cook wants a contract extension. On the team side of the ledger, head coach Sean McDermott did say he expected Cook to practice on the final day of training camp on Thursday... then he did not... making the situation all the more curious. In terms of general manager Brandon Beane, he spoke earlier in the week and admitted the team was surprised at Cook's hold out after he did appear at practices early on in camp. Even so, Beane still said communication is happening.
