Fahmi: Malaysia supports Tokyo Statement 2025 for secure and connected Asia-Pacific at APT-MM summit
TOKYO, May 30 — Malaysia will fully support the aspirations of the 'Tokyo Statement 2025,' which is set to be unveiled at the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministers' Meeting (APT-MM 2025), taking place here from May 30 to 31, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the statement will prioritise the development of resilient, inclusive and sustainable digital infrastructure to advance a more connected Asia-Pacific region, while leveraging emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
'The focus is not only on infrastructure development, but also on sustainability and our shared goal of ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital age,' he told Bernama today.
Fahmi is leading the Malaysian delegation to APT-MM 2025, which aims to strengthen regional cooperation in telecommunications and information technology.
The meeting will also mark the adoption of the Tokyo Statement, which outlines six priority areas: digital connectivity; digital innovation and entrepreneurship; trust and security; digital inclusion and capacity building; environmental sustainability; and regional and international cooperation.
Fahmi said the Madani government will also share Malaysia's comprehensive and proactive efforts in building a safe and trustworthy digital environment, which includes highlighting the importance of robust cybersecurity legislation, nationwide online safety campaigns and regulatory frameworks to ensure accountability among online platform providers.
'This meeting is a vital platform for shaping collective policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable and secure digital future for Asia-Pacific.
'It also provides a multilateral avenue for cooperation in one of the fastest-growing tech regions, in addition to supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building and ICT regulatory aspects,' he added.
Meanwhile, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa led the Malaysian delegation to the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on May 29, which included representatives from the Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The APT is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1979 under the joint initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union.
Themed Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific, this year's meeting is attended by 31 member countries and 19 associate members, comprising government entities, regulators and private sector agencies. — Bernama

The fisheries department announced the move today following complaints about the release of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) into the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang lake in conjunction with a fishing competition organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi). The fisheries department said several mitigation measures were agreed upon after a site visit and discussions with relevant officials. 'The fishing competition's secretariat will install additional hapa nets, provide bins to collect African catfish caught during the competition, and disseminate awareness material while carrying out fishing activities throughout the programme. 'Mardi will ensure compliance with the installation of nets, open the lake to controlled fishing activities, and coordinate the inventory and disposal of alien fish after the programme concludes,' the fisheries department said. It said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each or a total of two tonnes were released into the lake on May 29, without any notification or request for advisory services from the Selangor fisheries office. The department said the public should seek technical advice from the state fisheries office before carrying out any fish release activities into public waters.

Fahmi urges Malaysian students in Japan to embrace disciplined work culture
TOKYO: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has encouraged Malaysian students in Japan to adopt the country's disciplined and efficient work culture upon returning home, to contribute to national development. He also urged them to explore work opportunities in Japan to gain valuable experience that could benefit Malaysia in the long run. 'Insya-Allah, Malaysia is in a good position now, economically and in its role as ASEAN Chair. 'I hope you'll take full advantage of your time here to seek out work experience, and then return to help build the nation,' he said during a dinner and engagement session with members of the Malaysian diaspora and student community here tonight. Fahmi is in Tokyo to attend the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, held from May 30 to 31. The meeting aims to boost regional cooperation in telecommunications and information technology. Also present at the gathering were Deputy Head of Mission at the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo Anwar Udzir and embassy staff. The session was attended by 38 participants, including 11 members of the Malaysian diaspora and 27 students from various universities in and around Tokyo.

In a major speech outlining US strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, Hegseth referred to both leaders as 'historic men'. 'Like the late prime minister, President Trump's approach is grounded in common sense and national interests,' he said at the Shangri-La Dialogue which gathers key defence leaders from around the world. Lee, a British-trained lawyer, served as Singapore's prime minister for three decades. Hegseth praised his 'sage leadership and strategic vision'. 'That's what common sense policies can achieve, and that's precisely what President Trump's vision is all about.' Lee, who turned Singapore into a high-tech industrial and financial centre, remains highly revered in Singapore more than a decade after his death. Social media erupted with loud and acerbic criticism of Hegseth's comparison. 'One is historic, the other is hysteric,' said one commenter, while another remarked: 'Trump compared to Lee Kuan Yew?
