Bills' New Edge Rusher Thrilled With Old Role

Bills' New Edge Rusher Thrilled With Old Role originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
When Joey Bosa first came to the NFL, he came out as a pure edge rusher who could be a force on any defense in the league. The third overall pick for the Los Angeles Chargers, Bosa has become a consistent Pro Bowl star.

After several years of injuries, though, Bosa signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills this offseason. The deal has a bigger reason than just the lucrative contract.
In Los Angeles, Bosa moved from defensive end to pure edge rusher once the Chargers transitioned from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 unit. Over the years, the expectations surrounding Bosa have also changed.
This offseason, the Ohio State product is back in a familiar defense and with a familiar
Bosa will return in a familiar 4-3 scheme, which he played in during his time at Ohio State and early in his career with the Chargers. More importantly, he'll be able to have a clear goal in mind as well.

"It's exciting for me, no more outside linebacker. I'm ready to get my hand back in the dirt, get back to the six technique, and rush the passer," Bosa said at minicamp.
There is a difference between edge rushers in defenses focusing solely on rushing the passer and units requiring more from that position. When an edge rusher has more responsibilities than pass rushing, they tend to have fewer sack numbers.
That could explain Bosa's drop in recent years (outside of clear injury problems).
It's also why he can be considered a perfect fit for Sean McDermott's defense in Buffalo.

Laremy Tunsil Scouts Dan Quinn's Commanders Culture With 2 Words

Laremy Tunsil Scouts Dan Quinn's Commanders Culture With 2 Words originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Much was made of the cultural change Dan Quinn made last season as the head coach of the Washington Commanders, and newly acquired left tackle Laremy Tunsil is already noticing it. Advertisement With OTAs and minicamp now completed, Tunsil, who has been getting his feet wet on the field and in the classroom, having been traded from the Houston Texans, is liking his time in the nation's capital so far. And as for Quinn's culture and the vibes at practice? "It's something special for sure," Tunsil said via JP Finlay. "I think a DQ did a good job putting the culture together, putting the players together, and just embracing this new chapter with the Washington Commanders. I've been here for two days, I love the atmosphere, good energy, good people. Houston Texans offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (78) celebrates after the Texans defeated the Buffalo Bills at NRG Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images So, Tunsil has acclimated well to Washington's way of doing things, and he is poised to play a significant role in determining the NFC East franchise's success in 2025. Advertisement Jayden Daniels' new blindside protector, Tunsil, will be tasked with trying to bring Daniels' sack numbers down. Having been sacked 47 times last season, the sixth-most in football, given Jayden's slender build, that is a recipe for disaster. So why not hire a five-time Pro Bowler to serve as his bodyguard? With Tunsil guarding Jayden's blindside, last season's Offensive Rookie of the Year, can continue his ascension into the NFL's elite in Year 2. Granted, success isn't guaranteed, but Daniels showed in his rookie season that it might only be a matter of time before he is thrust into MVP conversations. And if he is, we imagine that Tunsil would have had a fair say in proceedings on the field. Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Chiefs' Retirement News on Tuesday

Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Chiefs' Retirement News on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Quite often, team mascots in sports don't get much attention. But on Tuesday, some big news dropped having to do with one of the longest-tenured mascots in the NFL. Advertisement Dan Meers, who has dressed up as "KC Wolf," the official mascot of the Kansas City Chiefs, announced his retirement. He had been "KC Wolf" since 1990, and he was even the league's first mascot to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes took to his personal X account to pay his respects to Meers, and he did so with a simple emoji of a goat, as if to say Meers is the greatest of all time. Meers had a brief stint as a mascot for Major League Baseball's St. Louis Cardinals before joining the Chiefs. Before that, he was "Truman the Tiger" for the University of Missouri, the school he graduated from in 1990. Advertisement The Chiefs are one of those franchises that don't necessarily need a mascot to promote themselves. They're the NFL's resident dynasty, having won three Super Bowl championships in the last six seasons, and more could be on the way. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes© Denny Medley-Imagn Images Mahomes and crew went 15-2 last season and were looking to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls. But they ended up falling short in the big game to the Philadelphia Eagles by a final score of 40-22. Still, they should be back in the hunt this coming season, especially with promising young wide receiver Rashee Rice returning from the LCL and hamstring injuries he suffered in Week 4 last year.
