HUL, ITC, Dabur, and others: Here are 3 key factors driving the FMCG stocks, and should you buy or sell?

Mint7 hours ago
Stock Market Today: HUL, ITC, Dabur, and other consumer stocks have been in focus recently . The share price of Hindustan Unilever Ltd., or HUL, and Godrej Consumer Products Limited are up almost 6.5% in the ongoing week. Dabur India and Marico share prices are also up 4-5%.
The key factors driving FMCG stocks include demand improvement to pick up pace and a good monsoon, which is likely to be positive and supportive for the rural consumption too.
The expectation of declining raw material prices and some calculated price hikes is also likely to be positive for the margins that remained subdued in Q1, though the recovery remains watched for.
Over the past three years, consumption has been hit by high inflation, rising interest rates, and a lack of government programs. The recent initiatives, such as the attempts at nationalization of the Goods and Services Tax, declining interest rates, and cooling inflation, are expected to be favorable, as per analysts.
The Q1 results season too has been encouraging; the earnings recovery in coming quarters will be keenly eyed.
The demand recovery that was seen in the April to June quarter continues. Based on our recent interactions with distributors and dealers, analysts feel that demand in the mass urban space improved, though marginally, in July '25.
As per Antiques Stock Broking, Nestle distributors reported a minor rebound in the milk and nutrition business, with strong growth in beverages, chocolates, and instant noodles.
ITC witnessed a healthy cigarette consumption rate.
Antique analysts believe Hindustan Unilever (HUL) is experiencing a sequential recovery with broad traction across categories.
Marico's price increase in Parachute had a minor impact on product sales in July but is expected to normalize in the future, as per analysts. They believe Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) saw a healthy increase in household insecticide use due to mosquito infestation.
Antique Stock Broking prefers Godrej Consumer Products, or GCPL, and Marico in the consumer staples.
The government aims to revive consumption, and the analysts say that the government has been making some efforts.
We believe that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to rationalize GST rates and simplify the rate structure on August 15th, 2025, will boost consumption. said analysts at Motilal Oswal Financial Services,
Rural markets' performance as per MOFSL has been an outlier for the last 12 months after witnessing a tepid performance during 2022-2023.
Price increases helped drive growth in Q1 FY126 as rural communities remained resilient, said analysts. Axis Securities pointed out that the urban weakness persists, but recovery is on the horizon. Higher raw material prices have put pressure on gross margins in staple companies, affecting overall performance, said Axis Securities.
However, Axis Securities added that in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, the FMCG sector stands out for delivering best-in-class return ratios such as ROCE, ROE, and dividend yield, ensuring long-term capital protection. Their picks include Varun Beverages and DOMS Industries.
We noted a relatively better revenue print and commentary from staple companies in 1QFY26, said Motilal Oswal Financial Services. They continue to like HUL, GCPL, and Marico in their staple universe.

PM Modi to inaugurate affordable houses, shops in Ahmedabad on Aug 25

Gandhinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 1,449 affordable houses and 130 shops built for Rs 133.42 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) during his two-day Gujarat visit on August 25–26. The project, developed under the in-situ slum redevelopment component, will provide modern housing facilities to families living in slum settlements of Ahmedabad's Nikol area. Under PMAY (Urban), Gujarat has so far completed construction of over 15 lakh houses, against a target of 7.64 lakh, with 9.66 lakh houses sanctioned and 9.07 lakh already delivered. The state has also bagged multiple national awards for its performance, including six in 2019 and seven in 2022. Meanwhile, under PMAY (Rural), Gujarat has completed 6 lakh houses since 2016, with an additional 2.39 lakh homes under construction, to be completed by March 2026. The scheme has attracted cumulative spending of Rs 8,936.55 crore till August 2025. Beneficiaries have also received additional state incentives such as Rs 50,000 roof-casting support, Rs 20,000 completion bonus, and assistance for sanitation and employment through convergence with MGNREGA and Swachh Bharat Mission. Gujarat has also been at the forefront of innovations, becoming the first state in India to get approval for Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHCs) and one of six states implementing the Light House Project under the Global Housing Technology Challenge, with 1,144 technologically advanced houses already completed in Rajkot. The Gujarat government has steadily increased its housing budget in recent years to boost affordable housing, particularly under schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and Mukhyamantri Gruh Yojana. A significant portion of allocations goes toward urban housing for low and middle-income groups, slum redevelopment, and rural housing support. The focus is on making housing more inclusive by providing subsidies, easy loans, and incentives for private developers to participate in affordable housing projects. The state has also emphasised green housing, infrastructure support, and integrating housing projects with basic amenities like water, sanitation, and electricity, ensuring that the push for 'Housing for All' is not just about construction but also about livability.

PM set to launch power, tourism & industrial projects from Gaya today

Patna/Gaya/Buxar: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi's visit to Gaya on Friday is set to mark a major moment for Bihar with the launch and inauguration of projects worth nearly Rs 13,000 crore covering energy, infrastructure, tourism and industrial development. Prominent among them is the commissioning of the first 660MW unit of the Buxar thermal power project at Chausa, which will be virtually inaugurated by the PM from Gaya. Officials said a successful trial run was conducted last week and power supply would now flow directly to grid stations at Patna, Karmanasha and Dehri-on-Sone. "This moment marks a milestone not just for Buxar but for the entire state," said Pulak Chandra Upadhyay, in charge of commissioning. At the same event, the PM will inaugurate or lay foundation stones for projects linked to health, power, urban development and religious tourism. Deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary said, "The tourism sector developed in Bihar under the leadership of PM Modi and CM Nitish Kumar is opening new doors of prosperity. The new projects to be launched will play an important role in making the state economically and socially strong and will also expand employment opportunities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo " He said special focus has been given to boosting connectivity to religious destinations. These include a train service under the Buddha Circuit from Vaishali to Koderma, a 1.86-km-long six-lane bridge over the Ganga to improve access to Simaria Dham in Begusarai, and the Sultanganj-Deoghar railway line. Other schemes include the revival of Sikh sites such as Patna Sahib, the construction of five-star hotels at Rajgir and Vaishali, beautification of the Ramayana Circuit, and promotion of rural tourism through homestay programmes. HAM(S) national president and minister Santosh Suman said the PM's visit would give a major push to Gayaji's growth. "The PM will gift projects worth Rs 1,675 crore and inaugurate the proposed industrial corridor in Gaya," he said. The political significance of the visit is equally important with the Magadh region historically seen as a weak spot for the NDA. The sprawling Magadh University campus has transformed into a massive meeting venue. Spread over 38 acres, the site has been equipped with six waterproof mega pandals and more than one lakh chairs for attendees. East Gaya BJP president Vijay Manjhi said people were travelling from across Magadh as well as neighbouring Jharkhand districts to attend. "In view of the humid weather and expected crowd density, adequate medical and paramedical staff will remain on site," he said. Security has been tightened with the Special Protection Group sanitising and sealing the venue while air traffic will remain suspended during the Prime Minister's stay. Traffic curbs mean all but VVIPs and VIPs will have to walk over a kilometre to reach the site. Manjhi added that NDA workers had spread out to villages to carry the PM's message of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas". "The public response has been very good," he said, adding that allies JD(U) were also fully engaged. Senior JD(U) leader Lalji Prasad said working president Sanjay Jha had visited Gaya twice to motivate party cadres ahead of the rally.
