Sharjah 242 days ago
The session will be held from 22 to 26 July 2025, under the generous patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, with the support and close follow-up of His Excellency Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League.
Djibouti and Palestine Among the First to Arrive
Djibouti and Palestine were the first delegations to arrive at UAE airports, followed by the remaining participating countries: Morocco, Mauritania, Libya, the Sultanate of Oman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Iraq, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Republic of Lebanon, the State of Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. In total, 14 countries are represented, with 56 child parliamentarians accompanied by official representatives from their national parliaments and child-focused institutions.
Warm Reception at UAE Airports
Delegations were warmly welcomed by reception teams from the General Secretariat of the Arab Parliament for the Child, in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Sharjah Consultative Council and the Parliament's institutional partners. Children and accompanying officials were received with generous Emirati hospitality, provided with all necessary facilities, transported to their accommodation in Sharjah, and briefed on the session's schedule and planned activities.
A Dialogue Platform on Cultural Identity
The event forms part of the Arab Parliament for the Child's commitment to empowering Arab children to voice their perspectives on childhood issues, enhance their dialogue skills, and strengthen their awareness of Arab cultural identity. This year, the child parliamentarians will discuss the theme 'The Cultural Identity of the Arab Child' during a wide-ranging dialogue session that reflects their visions and provides a pioneering Arab model of parliamentary work for children.
Message from the Secretary-General
On this occasion, His Excellency Ayman Othman Al Barout, Secretary-General of the Arab Parliament for the Child, welcomed the arrival of the delegations, noting that Sharjah's hosting of this significant event reflects the visionary leadership's dedication to child development.
He said: 'We are pleased to welcome Arab child parliamentarians from across the region to Sharjah, a city that embraces their dreams and offers them a platform to speak, engage, and practise their parliamentary roles in a safe and open environment. The participation of 14 Arab countries underscores the growing status of the Arab Parliament for the Child and embodies the spirit of Arab unity for a brighter future for our children.'
Looking Forward to an Enriching Session
Al Barout added: 'We value the institutional partnerships that support the Parliament in fulfilling its mission, and we look forward to a fruitful and enriching session that will broaden the horizons of the Arab child and deepen their connection to their identity and heritage. All of this takes place in an environment that nurtures innovation and meaningful dialogue. The official session, set to open under the dome of the Arab Parliament for the Child, will stand as a meeting point of childhood and leadership, of ideas and aspirations—a moment the Arab world will witness with pride, from east to west.'

Israel's Knesset has become a forum for extremism

To gauge how noxious Israeli politics has become, one need only consider what the past month has been like for Ayman Odeh, the Arab leader of a coalition of leftist parties. The Knesset, Israel's legislature, moved to impeach Mr Odeh for a tweet earlier in the year in which he said he was 'happy for the release of [Israeli] hostages and [Palestinian] prisoners' – the inclusion of both groups in the same sentence apparently too much for his detractors. Parliamentarians voted overwhelmingly – 73 to 14 – for Mr Odeh's expulsion, but a boycott of the session by Ultra-Orthodox parties over an unrelated issue prevented the 90-vote threshold required from being met. Then, last weekend, Mr Odeh was attacked on his way to an anti-war protest in central Israel. His assailants cracked the windshield of his car while he was inside, and chanted 'Death to Arabs'. Police, Mr Odeh says, stood by and did nothing. The silence from his fellow parliamentarians has been deafening. Yet it is little surprise, considering the anti-Arab mood in the Knesset appears to be at a fever pitch. On Wednesday, the legislature voted in favour of a non-binding motion to annex the West Bank, a Palestinian territory whose long-standing occupation by Israeli security forces is illegal under international law. The West Bank is a critical part of historic Palestine and any future Palestinian the vote was overwhelming, with 71 for to 13 against. The Knesset resolution called on the government 'to apply Israeli sovereignty, law, judgement and administration' over large areas where illegal Jewish settlements are present, and noted the entire territory is 'an inseparable part of the land of Israel', to which Israel has a 'natural, historical and legal right'. The anti-Arab mood appears to be at a fever pitch Ten Arab and Islamic countries, along with the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation, released a statement on Thursday roundly condemning the Knesset resolution. The statement, of which the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt were signatories, called the resolution 'a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international law', adding it will 'only fuel the growing tension in the region, exacerbated by the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe'. The resolution has been viewed by Israeli politicians as a largely symbolic measure, as it does not carry the force of law. But it is deeply problematic, both as an antagonistic barb against the dignity and rights of Palestinians and as a barometer of public sentiment. While it is true that the statements and votes of Members of the Knesset belie more nuanced public opinion, the picture is still disturbing. A poll conducted by The Jerusalem Post in February found that 35 per cent of Israelis favour a 'Jewish-only state, from the river to the sea'. This would, in effect, include the prospect of annexation of the West Bank and the end of hopes for a Palestinian state. The pro-annexation movement is about much more than territorial claims. It inherently denies Palestinians the right to exist as a national community – it is no coincidence the most prominent supporters of annexing the West Bank apply their logic to Gaza, too. The fact that it has become an ideological staple in the Knesset makes its success as eventual national policy much likelier, and that ought to alarm everyone in the region, as well as Israel's allies in the West. A generalised acceptance of lawlessness and oppression among most of a country's politicians can have concrete consequences. Even if the annexation resolution is symbolic, the violent assault against Mr Odeh was very real.

Arab League condemns Israel's Knesset approval of declaration to impose sovereignty over occupied West Bank

24 July 2025 23:00 CAIRO (WAM)Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, strongly condemned the Knesset's vote yesterday on a draft law to impose Israeli control over the West Bank, which has been occupied since a statement issued on Thursday, Aboul Gheit said that the draft law is part of a continuous plan to impose a de facto reality aimed at perpetuating the occupation and annexing the occupied Palestinian affirmed that the occupation's attempts to change the legal status of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are unacceptable and have no legal basis. He emphasised that the West Bank is considered occupied territory under international law and recognised as such by the United Nations, and that the Knesset's laws will not alter this unequivocal Gheit called on the international community to firmly confront such legally invalid and morally reprehensible measures. He stressed the importance of adhering to United Nations Security Council resolutions—most notably Resolutions 242 (1967) and 2334 (2016)—as a foundation for ending the occupation, in the face of Israel's efforts to normalize the legal status of the occupation through the annexation of the West Bank. He warned that 'the settler and religious extremist movements inside Israel will drag the entire region into catastrophic religious confrontations if they are not confronted and their obsessive ambitions are not checked.'
