Court points out inconsistencies, denies bail for former Limpopo teacher accused of rape
A former Limpopo teacher accused of raping a 13-year-old learner will remain behind bars after he was denied bail.
The 58-year-old man appeared in by the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to hear the outcome of his bail application.

Although the accused maintained that he was not a flight risk and would not interfere with state witnesses, Magistrate Venus Makhuvele found inconsistencies in the statements he made during the bail proceedings.
'There is contradictory statement in this regard. At first, the applicant indicated that he quit his job in order to accommodate the victim and to avoid being in the same school with her.
'On the other hand, he cited the issue of him wanting to pursue his ancestral calling as the reason for his resignation.
'It is clear that this issue of his ancestral calling only came about after the applicant learned about the charges against him,' she said.

Makhuvele concluded that the accused had not demonstrated any exceptional circumstances that would justify his release on bail.
'The applicant, in my view, has failed to discharge the onus placed on him in terms of seeking 60(11)(a) of the Criminal Procedure Act.
'Therefore, bail is dismissed and since your bail application is dismissed accused you are to remain in custody.'
The matter has been postponed to 20 June for a trial date.
Arrest and Case Background
The 58-year-old was arrested on 31 March after evading authorities.
He is accused of raping a 13-year-old student from a primary school in the Capricorn South Education District on multiple occasions between November 2024 and 7 March.
The matter surfaced on 27 March when another teacher took the learner to her mother and disclosed the alleged abuse.

A rape case was then opened for investigation. Following this, the former teacher fled.
According to the South African Police Service (Saps), the accused pretended to be heading to the police station but instead drove away in his car.
He later claimed to be in Hammanskraal, Pretoria, but could not be contacted as his phone was switched off.
The Limpopo Department of Education later confirmed that the accused has resigned from his position.

The General stressed that the SAPS is mobilising all available resources to hunt down and bring the criminals to justice. He issued a stern warning to those involved in serious and violent crimes: the SAPS is determined to use the full extent of the law against them. In a show of proactive policing, SAPS members were able to swiftly arrest one suspect on Tuesday evening shortly after the incident. Three arrested for cable theft in Bramley
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested three suspects after allegedly being caught in the act of stealing cables on August 10, following a tip-off from alert community members. The arrests took place near the intersection of Corlett Drive and Louis Botha Avenue, during a routine stop-and-search operation by JMPD Region E officers. Read more: Alexandra crime spike prompts SAPS response The operation was triggered by reports from residents who noticed a white Toyota Quantum parked suspiciously on the corner of Corlett and High streets. According to eyewitnesses, the occupants were seen loading electrical cables into the vehicle while pretending to fix it. When officers arrived at the scene, two suspects attempted to flee, but were quickly caught following a brief foot chase. A third suspect was later discovered hiding inside a manhole. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the suspects had removed the rear seats of the vehicle to make space for the stolen goods. 'Inside, officers recovered 38 pieces of cable, along with a hacksaw, a chain block, and a specialised manhole-opening tool, commonly used in infrastructure crimes.' All three suspects were detained at Bramley SAPS, and a case of tampering with essential infrastructure has been opened. The investigation remains ongoing. 'We urge residents to continue reporting suspicious activity,' said Fihla. 'It is through this kind of partnership between law enforcement and the public that we can effectively fight back against the sabotage of our city's infrastructure.' IAN CAMERON AND OTHER DA MPS INJURED IN CAPE TOWN SMASH AND GRAB On Tuesday, 19 August, Ian Cameron and fellow DA MPs Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell escaped a smash-and-grab after conducting official duties. A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself.
