Armed cops lockdown Edinburgh road and arrest man amid 'gangland crackdown'
Officers stopped a vehicle on Salamander Street in Leith at around 3.30pm on May 7 in front of stunned eyewitnesses.
Armed cops made an arrest after they shutdown a busy Edinburgh junction on Wednesday afternoon in the latest 'crackdown on gangsters'.
Officers stopped a vehicle on Salamander Street in Leith at around 3.30pm on May 7 in front of stunned eyewitnesses. Police Scotland later confirmed that a 27-year-old was arrested and charged in connection with 'various offences', Edinburgh Live reports.
It comes amidst a major operation to bust the ongoing gangland 'turf war' which has rocked the capital in recent weeks. It is understood that the arrest is one line of the inquiry that detectives are exploring over the arrest.
Several police cars were scrambled to the scene, with armed units also dispatched. One local resident said a small white hatchback had police tape around it with officers seemingly 'searching for something'.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 3.30pm on Wednesday, 7 May, officers stopped a car on Salamander Street in Edinburgh.
"A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with various offences and is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, 8 May, 2025."
A concerned local resident, who was passing by when the incident occurred, told us: "All of a sudden the police came out of nowhere and pulled over this car.
"There were officers with guns and it was such a slick operation. It was all over pretty fast. It's a busy junction and there were plenty of people milling around wondering what was going on.
"A short time later there was a small white hatchback backed onto the pavement with it's boot open and police tape around it. The armed police had left but there were uniformed officers there and it looked like they might have been searching for something."
The latest arrest comes after the nation-wide Force announced a crackdown on 'serious incidents' the east and west of the city, as they aim to target and bring those to justice involved with the ongoing 'gang war'.
On Friday, May 2, Kurtis Young was arrested in connection with two'fireraisings'. The 41-year-old was also charged with two counts of attempted murder and danger to life.
A 24-year-old man was also arrested and charged in Edinburgh in connection with a breach of bail on Friday, May 2, and appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, May 5.

Detective Chief Superintendent David Ferry said: "The high number of arrests made during this investigation highlights the ongoing work that officers have been doing to target those responsible for these attacks.
'While the number of incidents has decreased since we started this investigation I want to make it clear that we will not stop until we bring those responsible for this criminality to justice.

It is understood that 27 people have now been arrested as police tackle the gangland feud which started in Edinburgh before spreading to Glasgow.
Underworld sources have said the trouble flared after associates of kingpin Mark Richardson, who is currently behind bars, were accused of stealing cocaine worth £500,000 linked to a new Dubai-based crime lord, subbed "Mr Big".
Since the turf war began, properties across Edinburgh have been torched and shot at with firearms.
The Record told this week how the Edinburgh home belonging to Richardson's brother Dale was targeted. Two taxis were also set alight in the Gorgie Road, area of the city.

Cash paid to ride Dumfries and Galloway Council buses wasn't banked for 10 months
An audit has revealed that when money was paid in, it went into the wrong bank account. Cash paid to use Dumfries and Galloway's buses wasn't banked for 10 months, and when money was paid in, it went into the wrong bank account. The concerns were raised following an internal audit of how cash is handled on Dumfries and Galloway Council buses. The local authority runs 18 bus routes across the region – six out of Castle Douglas, 11 out of Dumfries and one out of Stranraer. The audit was carried out in December and investigators found no money had been banked for bus fares for the Dumfries or Castle Douglas services since February. The Stranraer money had been banked three times – twice in July and once in December. However, no income was found for one route as 'the driver did not have a licence' to charge fares. The report for Thursday's meeting of the audit, risk and scrutiny committee, adds: 'The legality of operating the service was clarified with legal services.' The report calls for cash to be paid in to the bank 'at least every week', which is now being carried out. The report warns: 'If income is not being submitted this would not be identified. Funds could be stolen.' Auditors also found that while money from Stranraer was going to the correct bank account, the Dumfries and Castle Douglas money was going into a catering account. And the inspectors wanted to see one person made responsible for all cash and bus income given to the transport officer to avoid the risk of 'cash not being handed in in full'.
