Giants rally again to beat lowly Rockies 10-7 for 7th straight win

DENVER (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double in the eighth inning keyed another San Francisco rally, and the Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight victory.
Willy Adames homered and drove in three early runs for the Giants, but they trailed 6-3 entering the eighth before coming back against reliever Tyler Kinley (0-3).
Adames, Heliot Ramos and Dominic Smith singled to load the bases with one out, and Casey Schmitt walked to bring in a run. Yastrzemski then lined a double off the right-center wall to tie it.
Tyler Fitzgerald laid down a bunt against Zach Agnos, and Schmitt slid around the tag of catcher Hunter Goodman with the go-ahead run. Schmitt was initially ruled out but the call was overturned following a replay review.
San Francisco added three insurance runs in the ninth on Wilmer Flores' sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by Schmitt and Yastrzemski.
Goodman hit his 11th homer in the bottom half to give him three hits and two RBIs, but the major league-worst Rockies fell to 12-55 with their fifth straight defeat.
Tristan Beck (1-0) tossed three innings of relief for the win.
San Francisco's previous eight games were decided by one run and its six prior wins came by that margin, one shy of the major league record for consecutive victories all by one run set by the 1927 Chicago Cubs.
Key moment
Colorado had two runners on when Orlando Arcia grounded back to closer Camilo Doval for the final out.
Key stats
The 1988 Atlanta Braves were the last team to play nine straight one-run games. ... San Francisco has 17 wins this year after trailing by multiple runs. The only other teams since 1901 to do that in the first 68 games of a season were the 2000 Rockies (17) and 1979 Orioles (18).

Bermuda, Curaçao, Jamaica and Trinidad drawn into CONCACAF all-island World Cup qualifying group

MIAMI (AP) — Bermuda, Curaçao, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago were drawn into an all-island Group B on Thursday night for the third round of World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean. El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and Suriname were put in Group A, and Costa Rica, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in Group C. A double round-robin will take place in September, October and November, and the three groups winners will qualify for the expanded 48-nation field next year. The region has a minimum six berths, with Canada, Mexico and the United States qualifying automatically as co-hosts. The top two second-place teams advance to six-team playoffs next March that include the No. 7 team from South America, No. 9 team from Asia, the No. 10 team from Africa and New Caledonia, which is the No. 2 team from Oceania. There will be semifinal single legs involving the four lowest-ranked playoff nations, with the winners advancing to single leg finals that will produce two qualifiers. Europe has 16 direct qualifying berths, Africa nine, Asia eight, South America six and Oceania one. ___ AP soccer:

Tigers lefty Skubal laments 2 walks in otherwise impressive 4-1 win over Orioles

BALTIMORE (AP) — Seven shutout innings. Only three hits allowed, along with two measly walks. Almost every pitcher in the big leagues would be delighted with those results. Not Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who wasn't fully satisfied with his performance in a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. 'I was kind of fighting myself early, and as the game wore on, I felt like I got better,' Skubal said. 'I'm probably more proud of grinding it out than when you're on early.' On a hot, humid night at Camden Yards, the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner looked rather ordinary in the first inning. Baltimore's leadoff hitter, Jordan Westburg, whacked a drive to right that was caught by leaping Kerry Carpenter at the wall. Two batters later, Gunnar Henderson singled. Skubal then walked Coby Mayo in the second inning and Ramón Laureano in the seventh. The two free passes were the most he'd allowed since April 2. 'During my next bullpen,' Skubal said with a wry smile, 'I'll go work on my command.' When you're almost always sharp and that overpowering, it's difficult tough to cope when things don't go perfectly. Skubal (7-2) threw 98 pitches, 74 in the strike zone, but those 24 other pitches caught his attention. 'I just think my misses were kind of bigger than they usually are,' he said. Tigers manager AJ Hinch was impressed with the results, but acknowledged that Skubal wasn't quite as impressive as usual. 'He didn't quite have the command he normally has,' Hinch said. 'That doesn't mean he had bad command tonight. It just means it was sort of not perfection. If that's your off day and it's seven scoreless, that's pretty good pitching.' With his sixth scoreless start of the year, Skubal lowered his ERA to 1.99. Yet, he was off his game just enough to draw a good-natured quip from his manager. 'He did walk a couple guys,' Finch noted, 'so we're going to have him work on some things.' ___ AP MLB:

He hit .284 last year and is still gathering momentum at the plate, suggesting he still has plenty of room to grow this season as the Tigers remain in hot pursuit of a second consecutive playoff appearance and a run at the best record in Major League Baseball.
