Florida man busted on Amtrak train with ‘small arsenal' of weapons: AG
Jeffrey O. Kennerk, 34, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was caught on a train on Jan. 3 with assault weapons, large-capacity ammunition magazines, handguns, silencers and a booby-trapped rifle that fired during his arrest at the Trenton Transit Center, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin's office said on April 16.
"This defendant allegedly hauled a small arsenal of deadly weapons and ammunition through busy transit stations, and on a train filled with passengers," Platkin said in a statement. "He allegedly left a suitcase containing assorted weapons and ammunition – including an assault rifle – in the concourse of Newark Penn Station, where anyone could have been harmed by them. If not for the outstanding police work done in this matter, we can only imagine where this defendant and these weapons would have ended up."
A New Jersey Transit Police officer was tipped off to an unaccompanied black and white zebra-print suitcase near the entrance to the Newark subway.
When authorities investigated the bag, they found a handgun with a fully loaded 18-round magazine. Further investigation revealed an AR-style magazine fully loaded with .223 ammunition, and a plastic bag with two boxes of 9mm ammunition and four boxes of .223 ammunition, officials said.
A secondary compartment in the bag allegedly contained a loaded Zastava Arms AK-47-style rifle and several more fully loaded magazines.
According to Platkin's office, Kennerk briefly abandoned the bag to purchase an Amtrak train ticket to Virginia. He then boarded the train in Newark but was intercepted by law enforcement at the train's next stop in Trenton.
Authorities said they found more weapons and ammunition upon Kennerk's arrest, including an "AR-15-style rifle that was separated into the lower and upper receiver, multiple caches of ammunition, multiple extended magazines, and multiple handguns."
They also found another rifle with .300 AAC Blackout ammunition, according to Platkin's office.
"The officer placed the muzzle into the suitcase pointed at the ground and attempted to remove one of the handkerchiefs to render it safe, at which time the firearm discharged without the officer engaging the trigger, indicating that the gun was allegedly booby-trapped," the AG's office said.
Authorities said they also found four silencers and hollow point ammunition in both 9mm and .22 long rifle calibers.
Kennerk was indicted for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, four counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, three counts of unlawful possession of an assault firearm, one count of aggravated assault and one count of certain persons not to have weapons, which are all second-degree crimes.
He was also charged with several fourth-degree crimes, including two counts of unlawful possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine, and one count each of unlawful possession of hollow nose ammunition, unlawful possession of a silencer, endangering another person and causing or risking widespread injury or damage.

As far back as when he was running for state Assembly in 2020, Mamdani has cheered that hookers should be able to turn tricks with impunity. 'Not only must we decriminalize sex work, we need a comprehensive platform of justice for all,' Mamdani said on the campaign trail in May 2020. And as a Queens assemblyman, he's co-sponsored multiple versions of legislation to decriminalize sex work statewide that remain stalled, supports them annually, and has spoken out in favor of the proposed law change many times. 'I would like to register my support for [decriminalizing sex work] legislation, my eagerness for that debate and for my fundamental belief that sex work is work,' he said at a February 2021 Assembly meeting. Getty Images 'The public needs to be fully aware that Mr. Mamdani wants a New York City where selling sex, buying sex, and promoting the sale of sex is completely normal and legal,' warned Sonia Ossorio, executive director of National Organization for Women NYC, which works to advance women's rights, policy and leadership. 'But unlike many of his most concerning and controversial positions, he's not out there talking about this because he knows it shocks the conscience.' 'The consequences' of decriminalizing prostitution would mean the Big Apple 'becoming a sex tourism destination,' potentially rivaling the red-light district in Amsterdam and parts of Belgium and Nevada where selling sex is legal, she added. Proponents of decriminalizing sex work claim allowing legal sex work leaves hookers — especially those who are trans, illegal migrants or people of color — less vulnerable to violence and exploitation by pimps, johns and even police officers. But many studies of countries and cities where prostitution is legal — including in Europe and parts of Nevada — show it typically leads to increases in crime, including human trafficking, organized crime and violence against prostitutes. That is not in line with Mr. Mamdani's slogan [of providing] 'dignity for everyone.'' If elected mayor, Mamdani would still need to go through the state Legislature to decriminalize sex work, but he'd be in a prime position to better advocate for such changes as well as ensuring that cracking down on prostitution is a low priority for the NYPD. 5 Mamdani noted his stance on decriminalizing sex work in his 2020 state Assembly campaign. Clusters of New York City have been inundated with an influx of hookers and pimps brazenly peddling flesh on public streets since legislation repealing a state statute prohibiting loitering for the purpose of prostitution was signed into law in February 2021 by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, critics said. They include Queens' infamous migrant 'Market of Sweethearts' along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor in Jackson Heights, Corona and other surrounding neighborhoods; seedy Penn Track in East New York, Brooklyn; and a sleazy section of the South Bronx called 'The Hub.' Both Rosa Sanchez, president of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, and former Queens Councilman Hiram Monserrate – who used the represent the neighborhoods encompassing the 'Market of the Sweethearts' – said the area will only get worse under Mamdani. 'I strongly believe crime will rise even more here,' said Sanchez. 'Our community is already suffering with all the crime and prostitution and all the gangs affiliated with prostitution. The NYPD did put a dent in the lawlessness earlier this year during its 90-day Operation Restore Roosevelt operation, with Mayor Eric Adams in June announcing crime had dropped 28% along the seedy strip compared to the previous year. However, the department scaled back its presence after the surge, Monseratte said. 5 Mamdani has repeatedly co-sponsored state legislation to decriminalize sex work. NY Assembly Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa painted an even gloomier picture. 'If Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor, what we see now in Corona, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and downtown Flushing could spread to all 350 neighborhoods in New York City, and he would do nothing to stop our streets from becoming red-light districts,' barked the founder of the Guardian Angels crime watchdog group. Adams said he believes decriminalizing sex work would only make it easier for prostitutes to be exploited while emboldening 'those who profit off the pain of others.' 'Our administration will never turn a blind eye to the abuse, violence, and human suffering that comes with this trade,' said Adams, a retired NYPD captain, in a statement to The Post. 'We are cracking down on traffickers and illegal operations, while offering real resources and a path forward for those trapped in this life. That's the balance — compassion for victims, zero tolerance for exploitation. New Yorkers deserve safety and dignity, not policies that handcuff law enforcement and open the door to more abuse.' 5 Mamdani wasn't shy about his stance on sex work in this May 2020 social media post. Cuomo put out a press release Friday — after being contacted by The Post — touting that he 'spent years' as governor opposing legislative attempts by Mamdani and other far-left pols to decriminalize sex work. 'We see you': Joint operation to combat recent gun violence nets 13 arrests
A joint operation between the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, Lake Charles Police and Louisiana State Police to address the recent gun violence in the community has netted 13 arrests in the past few weeks — and Sheriff Stitch Guillory has a message for those who are in possession of stolen firearms and are bragging about it online: 'We see you.' Over a six-week period between June and August, six shootings were reported within the parish. Four resulted in fatalities. In June, LCPD responded to a fatal shooting in the 200 block of North 1st Avenue and CPSO investigated the death of a man whose body was discovered on the side of the road near the 6700 block of U.S. 90 riddled with gunshot wounds. In July, CPSO investigated a fatal shooting at the Lake Charles Event Center Seawall, a Fourth of July shooting in the 1100 block of Allen Street in DeQuincy, and a shooting in the parking lot of Cowboys Night Club. On Aug. 5, LCPD responded to a fatal shooting in the parking lot of the On The Rocks bar — which is across the street from the McNeese State University Legacy Center. Guillory said the joint operation was underway before the On The Rocks shooting. 'We're not being reactive, we are proactive,' he said. 'Getting guns off our street and targeting criminals in and around local bar establishments where we know we're having problems (led to the operation). We decided to get ahead of the curve, it just so happened that the homicide at On The Rocks happened afterward.' Police Chief Shawn Caldwell said the arrests range from a 'variety of gun charges, a variety of drug charges and some traffic charges, as well.' During the arrests, seven illegally possessed firearms, more than 400 grams of marijuana, 12 Xanax pills and nine pressed Fentanyl pills were recovered. 'We take this serious. We're going to go out there, we're going to identify these people and we're going to arrest them,' Caldwell said. 'When we're done with that, we're going to turn them over to the DA.' District Attorney Stephen Dwight said two prosecutors on his team have been assigned to the joint operation to lend support and answer questions on searches and seizures. 'This is what the community wants to see; this is what we want to see,' Dwight said. 'We're getting guns off our streets and drugs off our streets and we're prepared to take these cases and run them through the judicial system.' Guillory said among the firearms confiscated was an AR-15. 'There's no purpose for that,' he said. 'What are you going to do with an AR-15?' To those college students fearful of patronizing local bars after their classes because of the recent violence, the sheriff said there has been no problems inside any of the facilities. 'It's just been in the parking lots, after they're closed,' he said. 'The bars themselves are safe.' Local ordinances require area bars and nightclubs to close at 2 a.m. Special details have been set up at these locations to clear out the parking lots after hours. Guillory said the men and women behind the badge signed up for this career because they want to make a difference in their community 'We're going to do everything we can, we're going to use every tool we have at our disposal to make our community safe and to keep our community safe,' he said. 'To the criminals out there, you want to go on social media and you want to post your stuff, we see it, too. That's our message. When you have drugs and you have them combined with a firearm, that's enhanced charges. I can promise you we're going to work with our federal partners to try and send you away for a very long time.'
