B.C. Conservatives register new municipal party ahead of next year's local elections

With the registration of a new political party, Conservative candidates could be on ballots for local councils in several of B.C.'s biggest cities for next year's municipal elections. Elections B.C.'s newest list of registered political parties shows that the Conservatives have, as of this week, registered as a civic political party, to operate in 15 B.C. municipalities, including Vancouver, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Kelowna. The municipal Conservative party was registered by David Denhoff, deputy director for the B.C. Conservatives, Elections B.C. records show. The B.C. Conservatives surged from less than two per cent of the vote in 2020 and not a single candidate elected, to electing 44 MLAs last year with 43 per cent of the vote and nearly forming government. Despite Denhoff's role with the new municipal party, it's not clear at this stage what level of co-ordination — if any — exists between the upstart municipal organization and the B.C. Conservatives. B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad declined to comment Thursday on the launch of the municipal Conservatives. The full list of jurisdictions where the Conservatives are registered to operate includes Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Delta, Fort St. John, Kamloops, Kelowna, the Township of Langley, Maple Ridge, Prince George, Richmond, Saanich, Surrey, Vancouver, Vanderhoof, and West Vancouver. Reached Thursday, Denhoff declined to discuss the new party but said he would share more information soon. dfumano@

Two arrested for Wyandotte Street break-ins

File photo of a Windsor police cruiser taken in Windsor, Ont. (Melanie Borrelli / CTV News) Windsor police have arrested two suspects after a series of commercial break-ins on Wyandotte Street East. In the early morning hours of Aug. 13, three businesses in the 4600, 7900, and 8400 blocks of Wyandotte Street East, in between Pillette Road and Riverdale Avenue, were broken into by unknown suspects. Police say in each incident, a woman drove up to the business while a man exited the vehicle and used a hammer, smashed a window or door to gain entry, and stole items from inside. Members of the Windsor Police Target Base Unit launched an investigation and obtained surveillance video showing the female suspect and the suspect vehicle. On Aug. 14, at 11 a.m., officers observed the same vehicle travelling westbound on Tecumseh Road East. Officers say they conducted surveillance and confirmed the female driver matched the suspect seen on video. An unmarked police cruiser conducted a traffic stop in the 1400 block of Windsor Avenue, and the woman was taken into custody without incident. Through further investigation, officers identified the male suspect. On Aug. 20, members of the OPP-led Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Unit located and arrested him in the Greater Toronto Area.
