Our Food Tour Around Honolulu
As a travel writer (and frequent traveler), one of the best ways to connect with and learn about a culture is through food. You'll have the opportunity to learn about how it's made, its origin, how it's prepared, and how it's used beyond traditional methods. With it being my family's first time in Hawaii, combining history, sweeping views, and authentic food was a no-brainer.
Our anticipation for the upcoming food tour was palpable. We had chosen a 4-5 hour tour, and our guide, Alex, reached out to us shortly after booking to confirm plans, pick-up time, the number of passengers, and outline the route. His question about anything specific we wanted to do during the tour added to our excitement. The drive along the coast, with its breathtaking views of waterfalls and enjoyable stopping points like Halona Blowhole, The Makapuu Lookout, and Pali Lookout, only heightened our anticipation. Let's break down the food stops!
Since its establishment in 1952, Leonard's Bakery has been a beloved institution, delighting both locals and visitors with its delectable breads, pastries, and sweet treats. Their most famous offering, the malasadas, also known as Portuguese donuts, is a testament to their culinary excellence.
It's a simple concept: fried dough tossed in sugar, but it's pretty darn good. You can get them filled with creams or custards. We had our treats plain as well as vanilla or chocolate-filled. We attempted to stop by the physical store, but the line was out the door and wrapped around the building. Instead of waiting, Alex went to the mobile pop-up, and these tasty delights were in our hands in less than 10 minutes.
Of course, a food tour isn't complete without something of substance. For that, Alex drove us to Waimanalo for a stop at Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack. This little yellow building with hand-painted lettering is a place that can't be missed. Not only because the bright color beckons you from the road, but because it's an absolute 'if you know you know' kind of establishment. You won't find a lot of bells and whistles, but you will find a perfect bite to eat and a truly authentic, no-frills experience.
In fact, we had drained our phone batteries capturing so many pictures and videos of the scenery along the way, so we didn't have a chance to snap a photo of the food ourselves. We had an order of fish tacos – perfectly portioned and seasoned. It does have a hefty portion of mango salsa and slaw–we removed some of it. However, both were flavorful and complemented the fish well.
We also received an order of garlic shrimp, which consisted of just steamed shrimp tossed in fresh garlic and butter. And, coconut shrimp. It was all delicious. If you want, grab your food to go and head to the beach across the street!
Manoa, a bean-to-bar chocolate factory located in Oahu, specializes in Hawaiian chocolate. Their tasting and tour options are a journey of excitement for your taste buds. Our experience, arranged by Alex, was a chocolate education and tasting session. This included learning about the sourcing and production of chocolate, as well as sampling a variety of 5-7 unique flavors, each more exciting than the last, along with a cacao tea service.
Another beloved establishment is Waiola Shave Ice, a neighborhood gem that has been serving the community since 1940. They started at a local corner store and now specialize (since 1978) in a unique Hawaiian treat, shaved ice, using just five (base) flavors: strawberry, banana, blue vanilla, cherry, and grape. Their authentic yet straightforward offerings are a true reflection of the local food culture. You can enjoy your shaved ice in your vehicle, while walking around the neighborhood, or on the bench outside. As we were leaving, a tour bus of fifty or so passengers pulled up, all showing so much excitement to get a taste.
This Was One Of My Family's Favorite Activities
The food tour was a hit for my family. Especially my younger girls. During our drive, Alex, a seasoned Hawaii resident with over 20 years of experience, regaled us with fascinating facts and local lore about the Islands. He even pointed out The Obamas' house and the hospital where he was born, adding a personal touch to our journey. His recommendations for the remaining days in Oahu were invaluable, making our trip even more memorable.

You can now use TikTok to book hotels — and creators could score a payday
Lots of people scroll TikTok to plan their next vacation — or dream of when they can next escape the grind. Now, they can book a hotel directly in the app. TikTok has launched an integration with that lets users enter check-in and check-out dates and book available rooms at specific hotels. Each hotel has a dedicated landing page with information about prices, amenities, reviews, things to do nearby, and related TikTok videos about the property. Users can also tag the hotel in videos, according to several posts viewed by Business Insider. The company is separately rolling out a creator monetization program in the US called TikTok Go that lets local merchants like hotels pay creators a commission or offer vouchers for promoting their business. Influencers must have at least 1,000 followers, be at least 18 years old, and have an account in good standing to qualify. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed the company is testing a new feature that lets some US travelers book hotel accommodations through the app, and that its TikTok Go program recently expanded to the country. A spokesperson for declined to comment. Creators in the TikTok Go program who want to receive commissions or voucher offers can set their location and view a list of tasks, like posting a video, from hotels or other venues like restaurants. They can then earn a commission if they drive a sale. The company last year filed a US trademark application for "TikTok Go" with a potential use case of "promoting restaurants, retail businesses, the travel industry, and other online and offline businesses," Semafor earlier reported. The arrival of hotel bookings on TikTok taps into the company's broader push to drive e-commerce activity in its app. TikTok has invested heavily in its shopping tool, TikTok Shop, and it's built a variety of Yelp-style products for local businesses. The company leans heavily on influencers to help promote products in videos in exchange for a commission on sales. TikTok Go could open a new revenue stream for travel influencers on the app, though commissions for expensive purchases like a hotel stay may come up less often compared to cheaper TikTok Shop items like hairbrushes, t-shirts, and candy. "I think the program's cool," travel creator Amanda Dishman, who runs a family blog called Salty Vagabonds and gained access to TikTok Go this week, told Business Insider. "The barrier to entry into being able to make commission, they just slashed that in half and really made it accessible to a lot more people," she said. As TikTok has emerged as a popular search tool among Gen Z users, the company has built out a "Places" tab for users to discover new destinations and activities. Users can also leave reviews and earn badges for being a "local explorer." The company earlier set up features to help users book concert and movie tickets from videos via Ticketmaster, Fandango, and other providers.

Technology has fuelled overtourism – now it could also help to stem the tide
Tourism is not always welcomed by the people who actually live in the places so many of us want to visit. Big crowds can bring economic benefits, but they can also price out the locals and cause environmental damage. Some blame Airbnb. Others blame the cruise ship operators, the retired 'boomers' or the growing middle classes across the world, with their disposable incomes and insatiable appetite for selfies. But one element which often gets overlooked is the role of technology. Historically, new transport technology has been a huge driver of the tourism industry. In the UK, for example, 19th-century railway expansion introduced mass tourism to coastal towns including Bournemouth and Blackpool. In the 1960s, cheaper air travel did the same for destinations abroad, with places such as Majorca and the Spanish Costa del Sol becoming accessible to hoards of new visitors. But new modes of transport are no longer the main driver of mass tourism. There are no imminent new ways of travelling by land, air or sea which will fuel change in the industry in the way that trains and planes once did. Now the effects of technology are more subtle, as the online world transforms the way we travel across the real world. The internet has blurred the distinction between residents and tourists. The surge in working from home, itself made possible by the internet, means that some people can live where they like to play, instead of prioritising proximity to the office or commuter trains. Then there are the 'digital nomads' who embrace the idea of remote working to the extent that they are able to live anywhere in the world with a decent internet connection. The rise of social media has also had a big impact on tourism, spreading stories and images about previously little-known attractions. A few viral videos can quickly turn quiet backwaters into travel hotspots. Just ask residents of the once-quiet Italian ski resort of Roccaraso, which was overwhelmed by a surge of visitors in January 2025 thanks to some Tiktok videos by the Italian social media influencer, Rita De Crescenzo. The online world has also closed a gap which previously existed between tourism destinations and their distant customers. Pre-internet, the global tourism industry relied on travel agencies and printed media. Now, every hotel or resort is a click away, with platforms like Airbnb (which hosted 5 million rental properties in 2024) transforming the sector. The effects of artificial intelligence on tourism are less certain. But perhaps it could be part of a solution. Virtual vacations? AI could be used to help create bespoke, personal tourism experiences in locations that really need tourists, thus reducing the harm caused to overcrowded locations or fragile eco-systems. The travel industry could also use it to make more accurate predictions about travel patterns, helping places like Barcelona and Venice to manage their number of visitors. AI-enhanced virtual reality also has the potential to let people have experiences of tourism destinations from afar, with research suggesting 'virtual holidays' could dramatically change the tourism sector. After all, many of us have swapped other real-life experiences like shopping and work meetings to something we do via a screen. There is even evidence of an emerging preference for playing online sports over the real-life versions. But could virtual tourism become so attractive that it significantly reduces the real thing? Will tourists really be content with seeing a virtual version of an artistic or natural wonder, instead of queuing for hours to experience it as part of a crowd? Similar questions were asked when colour television developed in the 1960s. Would, for example, the vivid portrayal of wildlife in African game reserves reduce the need for tourists to travel there? Who would bother with the expense and effort of going to Kenya or Botswana, when they could be seen up close from the comfort of a sofa? The outcome, though, was the exact opposite. There is evidence that wildlife programmes have actually stimulated demand to see the real thing. Similarly, popular films and TV shows set in beautiful locations make people want to visit them, with anticipation and expectation adding value to the final tourist experience. So, while we can be pretty sure AI will affect tourism – as it will every industry – we don't yet know whether its overall impact will be to reduce pressure on the world's most popular places, or further stimulate demand. And it may not be technology that has the final say – concerns about climate change and economic pressures may influence global travel patterns first.
