
Tax Breaks: The Keeping Your Sanity And Surviving Tax Season Edition
One way to keep sane during tax season? Take short breaks.
Tax Day is less than a month away. Are you ready?
If the IRS tax filing statistics are any indication, taxpayers still aren't rushing to file. Numbers for tax filing and processing of tax returns dipped again (☆), a trend that hasn't changed since the season opened on January 27, 2025.
Some taxpayers may be waiting to file–there's still plenty of time. Others may be looking to file an extension. (☆) It's free and easy and can help ensure a complete, correct return. Taxpayers sometimes push back, insisting that filing for an extension will cause a return to be flagged for audit. Not only do the statistics not bear this out, but it doesn't make good sense: I maintain that it's always better to file a complete, correct return on extension than a rushed, flawed return by Tax Day. Filing for extension will give you an extra six months–until October 15, 2025–to file your tax return. Just don't forget to make a payment with your extension–it extends your time to file but not the time to pay. Your payment is still due on or before April 15, 2025.
U.S. persons with foreign financial accounts may also need to file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts, or FBAR. The filing deadline is April 15, the same due date as one's U.S. income tax return, but there is an automatic extension to October 15 if the initial FBAR deadline is missed. No separate extension request is required. For tax year 2024, the FBAR must be filed by April 15, 2025, with the automatic extension pushing the final due date to October 15, 2025.
If you're expecting a refund as a result of your tax return, pay close attention to the mail (more on that in a bit) and to your benefits. The Social Security Administration will resume (☆) attempts to recover overpayments through the Treasury Offset Program—attempts that had been suspended since March 2020 due to COVID. The program allows the Treasury to withhold tax refunds, among other payments.
The agency will also begin withholding 100% of benefits checks to make up for any overpayments. That's up from the current rate of 10% that the Biden Administration put into effect in March 2024 after growing public attention to the hardship caused by 100% withholding. It's particularly problematic for those for whom Social Security is the primary source of income.
Crucially, the 100% withholding rate will not apply to beneficiaries with an overpayment prior to March 27. Their rate will remain 10%. In addition, the withholding rate for beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI)—the minimum payments made to poor seniors and people with disabilities—will remain 10%.
The overpayment withholding rate—often called a clawback—allows the government to recover 'improper' payments. By definition, improper payments can be overpayments (when SSA pays someone more than they are due) or underpayments (when SSA pays someone less than they are due). According to a report from the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General, for the fiscal years 2015 through 2022, SSA estimates it made nearly $72 billion in improper payments, most of which were overpayments. That represents 0.84% of total Social Security payments during that time.
Here's something else to keep an eye out for. Sadly, scammers are also taking advantage of unemployment benefits. (☆) Over the last few years, taxpayers have reported receipt of unemployment-related tax forms when they did not apply for benefits. If you've received a Form 1099-G that shows you received unemployment benefits you never received, someone may have used your name and personal information to apply for benefits. In that case, you'll want to make a report to the state. And the IRS advises that when you file your taxes, you should only include income you received—the processing of your tax return should not be delayed while your report of unemployment identity theft is under investigation.
With all of that to consider, it's no wonder that most Americans don't look forward to Tax Day. A recent Wallet Hub survey found that nearly a third of taxpayers would rather serve on jury duty than do their taxes. Nearly one in eight taxpayers would rather talk to their kids about sex than do taxes, while one in 20 would rather drink expired milk.
Rashelle Isip, a New York City-based productivity consultant and time management coach, has literally written the book on time management: The Order Expert's Guide to Time Management. Isip says that the first step to surviving tax season is understanding that it won't last forever.
To make the process less stressful, Isip recommends that you not tackle the whole project at once. "Break it into pieces," she says, offering a sample to-do list. (☆)
Isip also suggests introducing short breaks, like taking a class at the gym or going for a walk, into your routine. It can be hard to convince yourself to take a physical break, but Isip says that it can help to get out of your head and get your body moving. Then she says, take a quick moment of reflection and think about how you felt. You might be surprised at the results. It's not unusual, for example, for you to think, "Going for a walk felt good—and now I see the error in my spreadsheet."
"There is," Isip explains, "always work to do. Always." Taking a step away is essential, and while it seems counterintuitive, a break can actually increase your productivity.

This week, a reader asked:
I received a 1099-K, but the amount on the form is wrong. It includes more money than I received for my business. What do I do?
Form 1099-K is used to report certain payment transactions when, for the tax year 2024, payments totaling more than $5,000 are settled (☆) through a third-party network including payment apps like PayPal and online marketplaces like Etsy. No threshold applies to payment card transactions—payment cards include credit, debit, or stored value cards such as gift cards–if you received $1 of payments from a payment card transaction, you should receive a Form 1099-K for those payments.
However, just because a payment is reported on a Form 1099-K does not mean it is taxable. (Similarly, a payment that was not reported on a Form 1099-K can still be taxable–it depends on the nature of the payment.)
For example, payments made through a third-party network for a birthday or holiday or wedding gifts; for sharing the cost of a car ride or meal; or for paying a family member or roommate for a household bill aren't taxable. These payments should not be reported on Form 1099-K. If you get a mistaken 1099-K for one, that doesn't make them taxable.
The casual sale of goods and services, including selling used personal items like clothing, furniture, and other household items for a loss, could properly generate a Form 1099-K for many people, even if the seller has no tax liability from those sales. Most sales of personal items result in a loss (sadly, the loss on the sale of a personal item is not deductible), but on the chance that you have a gain, you'll report it as you would any other capital gain on Schedule D.
That applies to those Taylor Swift tickets that you sold for a gain, too. That gain is taxable, even if you're not in the business of selling Eras Tour tickets—and you may well receive a Form 1099-K.
As you'd expect, transactions in the course of business are taxable–even if that business is only selling the sweaters and scarves you knit. They are also reportable on Form 1099-K.
Each payment app or online marketplace will have its own processes for categorizing payments. If you use the same platform for business and personal items, you could have some mixed reporting. The IRS encourages you to review the policies of any apps or online marketplaces you use to make sure that your transactions are reported appropriately.
If you still have a question about your Form 1099-K or believe that your Form 1099-K needs to be corrected, you should contact the entity that filed the Form 1099-K. The contact information is generally in the upper left corner of the form. If you don't recognize that name, contact the payment settlement entity (PSE) whose name and phone number are shown in the lower-left corner of the form above their account number.
Don't wait to file your tax return if you can't get a corrected Form 1099-K. You can simply adjust the error when you file. You'll make the adjustment on Schedule 1 of your Form 1040 as follows:

As consumer confidence falters, government layoffs dominate the news and recession warning signs start blinking, it's smart to think about what you might do if you need additional cash.
One source Americans consider tapping in an emergency or when they're otherwise short of cash? Retirement accounts. (☆) It makes sense, since for many workers, retirement accounts represent most of their liquid savings.
In general, a retirement plan can begin distributing money after a participant reaches a certain age—usually 59-1/2. If you take funds earlier, you usually must pay a 10% penalty (some exceptions apply, keep reading) in addition to normal federal income tax on the distribution. Truth is, the rules on early withdrawals are complicated and seem to be constantly changing. Here's a handy, quick-look table with some of the exceptions:

In 2023, the IRS issued 120.9 million refunds, amounting to more than $461.2 billion. Last year, nearly 91% of all refunds were issued by Direct Deposit—so far this season, nearly 97% of refunds have been issued by Direct Deposit. The IRS encourages taxpayers to use Direct Deposit, claiming it's the easiest, safest and fastest way to receive your refund.
A recent criminal case (☆) offers a cautionary tale to drive home that point. A former U.S. Postal Service employee was found guilty of stealing checks, including tax refund checks, from customers on his route.
According to court documents, Hachikosela Muchimba was a mail carrier assigned to Route 23 at the Friendship Post Office Station in Washington, D.C. Over two years, he stole checks from the mail intended for delivery to residents on his route. At least 90 of the checks were U.S. Treasury checks, including tax refunds.
Muchimba deposited nearly 100 checks worth over $1.6 million into several banks. In some instances, Muchimba altered the checks by removing the payee's name and replacing it with his name. Bank surveillance footage captured images of him making deposits and withdrawing funds—in some of the footage, he's wearing his U.S. Postal Service work clothes.
Muchimba proved to be his own worst enemy. A postal customer provided law enforcement with a copy of an altered check. Remarkably, the customer recognized the name and the address on the check as the same that his mail carrier, Muchimba, had used on a holiday card sent to residents on his mail route the previous December.
On March 13, 2025, a jury found Muchimba guilty of 20 counts, including conspiracy to commit theft of mail and bank fraud, theft of mail, bank fraud, engaging in a monetary transaction in property derived from specified unlawful activity, and unlawful procurement of citizenship or naturalization. His sentencing is scheduled for August 8, 2025. He faces up to 30 years in prison for bank fraud and five years for mail theft.
📅 April 1, 2025. Deadline for retirees who turned 73 in 2024 to begin receiving required minimum distributions (RMDs) from IRAs, 401(k)s and other retirement plans. Under a special rule, IRA owners and participants born after December 31, 1950, and who turned 73 in 2024, can delay their first RMD until April 1, 2025. The April 1 deadline is for the first year only–for subsequent years, the distribution is due by December 31. Further, taxpayers receiving their first required distribution for 2024 in 2025 (by April 1) must take their second RMD for 2025 by December 31, 2025.

In a letter to Congressional leadership in the Senate Finance and House Ways & Means Committees, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) highlighted a number of legislative proposals directly related to possible changes to the tax rules. The 2025 tax priorities outlined in the letter included several proposals from the AICPA's 2025 Compendium of Tax Legislative Proposals – Simplification and Technical Proposals, which included 69 suggested simplification of and technical changes to provisions in the Internal Revenue Code.
Gary Shapley has been named deputy chief for IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), starting March 19. In his new role, Shapley will oversee 20 field offices and 14 foreign posts, including more than 2,000 special agents investigating tax fraud and other financial crimes.
Fried Frank announced that Oliver Currall will join the firm as a partner in the Tax Department in London. Currall advises on UK and international tax structuring, with a particular focus on cross-border private equity and M&A transactions, and the structuring and operation of global investment funds. He provides tax advice to major private equity sponsors on their deals and to asset managers on the operation of UK management company and asset holding structures.

Tingle Tables are named for Jim Tingle, the former IRS employee who invented them in 1962, building the prototype in his backyard.
In 1989, the New York Times said the desk looked like 'an octopus carrying 10 dinner trays,' noting that it was used to sort federal income tax returns. That's because the desk featured a U-shaped surface with 18 to 25 hanging baskets—that's where the IRS employees who open tax returns began sorting. The design allowed employees to break down as many as 1,500 returns a day.
The design is so iconic that a Tingle Table is held for display by the National Museum of American History.
As for the other choices? Exception mail stops are a designation used by the IRS to direct mail. Flat Tubs are actually used by the U.S. Postal Service. They are the white tubs used to hold and transport various types of mail, especially flats. And Devil Desks? That's just something I made up.

Terry Savage: My top 10 lessons for entering the digital financial era
We live in a digital world, especially when it comes to money. And, like it or not, you'll soon be forced to get used to it — especially since the IRS will soon no longer accept or pay out with paper checks! On March 25, President Trump signed an executive order mandating that all federal departments and agencies end their use of paper checks and switch to electronic payments by September 30. Soon, you'll be required to make tax payments securely and directly from your bank to the IRS via their website! (See Don't get defensive here. I'm well aware that a certain generation has no intention of moving into this 'modern' digital era. My own (younger) brother will not let me get him a smartphone, and he truly believes that I check my email every hour to get his announcement that he arrived safely home! No texting for him! My plea: If you have already joined the digital revolution, please don't give up on your Luddite family members and neighbors. They're going to need your help as cash disappears, along with paper checks. Already more than 95% of tax returns are filed electronically, even if your accountant gives you a paper copy! You can't stave off the digital era of money, so you must learn to handle everything from Venmo and Paypal to credit and banking online, securely. If, by chance, you're a 20-something who happened to read this column in a newspaper (does that happen anymore?), it is your duty to drag your grandparents into the digital age. Do your duty. After all, an older person taught you how to drive a car! OK, here are my top 10 lessons for entering the digital financial era. 1. Practice safe digitalization. Do your important financial things only on your home computer. Make sure you access the internet securely. Have a computer expert (or your grandchild) install a secure Wi-Fi connection, complete with password so your neighbors can't snoop. 2. Practice secure connectivity. Every bank and financial institution requires two-factor authentication. That means if you sign on to its website, it will instantly text or email you a code to insert on the sign-in page. (Another good reason for texting!) And banks mean it when they say 'Do not share this code with anyone'! Too many seniors are defrauded when they share this code with a fraudster over the phone. 3. Don't use your phone in public places to access private financial information. No matter who asks you to just 'check your bank balance' or 'confirm that your account is secure' — don't go online in Starbucks or outside your bank to access your account! The 'air' is insecure! 4. Protect your passwords. Yes, it's difficult to remember all those passwords — but that's no excuse for using the same one everywhere! Instead, your younger tech expert will help you get a 'password vault' — such as Dashlane or NordPass to securely generate strong passwords and safely keep track of them, auto-filling them when you go to a website. Now you only have one password to remember — the overall password to your vault. Never give it out! 5. Secure your cellphone. I've written about this before. Scammers have developed new sophisticated strategies to 'clone' your SIM card — the inner workings of your phone — allowing them to divert those two-factor text authorization messages. Ask your phone company to provide a separate password for your SIM card. That means every time you turn on the phone you need to insert not only your phone password, but the sim card password. 6. Be careful where you use your card and PIN. Don't take cash from an ATM in the grocery store unless it is an ATM provided by your bank. Keep one card for use at gas stations, where you're more likely to be a victim of skimming through devices inserted in the card slot. Reserve one card for your online purchases. 7. Use the new technology on your card. Now, instead of using the keypad to insert your PIN where someone can watch over your shoulder, just tap your card on the reader when you make a purchase. Then put the card away quickly in your RFID-protected wallet. 8. Track your bank and credit card accounts online at least weekly, from your secure Wi-Fi connection at home. You're looking for balances and unexpected charges. Call your bank or card issuer immediately if you find something suspicious. And please remember to close the browser window that accesses your bank account when you've finished looking at it! 9. Track your credit score even if you're not planning to make a large purchase or buy insurance. Changes can mean someone else is accessing your credit to borrow money. Your bank or card issuer probably offers credit score checks for free. Or sign up at Check in only on your home computer. 10. Freeze your credit at all three bureaus, by going to Then remember the PIN you created to access your credit report! There is no cost to freeze, and you can temporarily unfreeze at any time if applying for a loan or insurance. Bottom line: You can't escape the digital financial era! Your best route is to understand it, use it safely, and to your advantage. That's The Savage Truth.

Terry Savage: Grace period on student loan repayment is over
Student loans have been looming in the background for more than five years, ever since payment requirements were suspended during the pandemic. During that five-year period, borrowers had several opportunities to reorganize their debts, based on more generous income provisions, to lower the monthly payments. Many took advantage of those plans, and resumed their payments at a lower level. But others simply ignored that huge cloud of debt, since it was not accruing interest during the suspension, until fall of 2023 when interest started accruing again. Of the nearly 43 million people who owe money, only about one-third have made regular payments, according to the Department of Education. At least 5 million borrowers are considered to be in default — not having made a payment in nine months. Millions more are expected to fall into default in the coming months as they are made aware of the repayment restart. Until now, the government did not institute collection procedures. But that grace period ended May 5. And the repayments are coming back with a vengeance. The headline that has shocked many borrowers is the fact that the government is now using its power to grab any tax refunds and other federal benefits, or even Social Security benefits (in the case of co-signing parents). Even more scary, the administration will start the process of garnishing wages on defaulted loans! And default will impact your credit score. All delinquent borrowers should have received an email notifying them of their status. But it's entirely possible that the Department of Education has lost track of your contact information — although not of your Social Security number! It's up to you — the borrower — to make sure that your information is updated. Do that at where you will use your original FSA ID number to sign in. There you can find not only the status of your loans but also who your current servicer is. Most student loans have changed servicing companies at least once, if not several times, since you graduated and first made your repayment plans. It is critical that you get in touch with the company servicing your loan to at least make sure they have your contact information. The next steps depend on whether you can now afford to make the full required monthly payment. For most people that will be quite a chore. But there are still plans (though less generous than two years ago) to help you deal with those payments and create reductions — if you act promptly. At you can learn about and apply for the remaining income-driven repayment plans for which you might qualify. Note that Parent Plus loans might also qualify for income-driven repayment plans, but only after the loans are consolidated. The previous administration's popular Saving for a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan is no longer available because of court challenges to its generous terms. But borrowers can still get into the PAYE (Pay as You Earn) plan, in which payments are capped at 10% of a borrower's income. And if you're able to pay more and want to pay down the loan faster, check out the Income-Contingent Repayment plan. Since these income-based plans are calculated based on family size and your discretionary income, you must recertify each year. Thus, if you are currently on an income-driven plan, it might also be time to recertify at There are several other alternatives for dealing with your student loans. Forbearance is still a possibility to temporarily stop payments or make substantially lower ones. But that won't make the problem go away — and interest continues to accrue. Graduated payment plans can help those whose incomes should rise in the future. And deferment is another possibility in case of extreme hardship. At you can compare the impact of those plans over the long run. And Public Service Loan Forgiveness remains in place, though the Trump administration is already limiting the jobs that are considered public service. Congress is now considering substantial changes to the various student loan plans, including doing away with 'subsidized' loans, which do not accrue interest while the student is still in school. Also on the potential chopping block are graduate student loans. In fact, the administration is even talking about ending or reorganizing the entire Department of Education. But that's not your immediate concern. The real challenge now is figuring out a repayment plan for your current loans. It's tempting to try to forget they exist. But the government is going to find you. And you'll have a lot more options if you find them first — and make an attempt at repayment. And that's The Savage Truth.

Terry Savage: AI used to guide seniors to Medicare programs
Does the concept of artificial intelligence intimidate you? Or do you figure it won't have much impact on your life, so why bother learning about it? Well, AI is definitely entering — and improving — your life, whether you choose it or not. When I first wrote about ChatGPT several years ago, AI was viewed as a powerful tool to collect information from huge databases and sort it out to provide answers to questions. Since then, AI has quickly morphed into a useful tool for business and individuals, creating accurate and life-like interactions that make outcomes easier. For example, the new Social Security commissioner, a former tech payments CEO, has announced that Social Security will soon be using AI in its call centers. If the idea of talking to a 'robot' sends chills down your spine, think again. In this column, I'll show you a company that is already using AI in its call center — and generating responses that truly make you think you're talking to a helpful person. A reality check It's a generational thing. When I want help after calling a toll-free number for product information or credit card adjustments or insurance issues, I want to talk to an intelligent human being. I guess there aren't enough to go around! One of my pet peeves is being transferred to a voice messaging system that tries to 'help' me decide how to get answers to a simple question. They offer five choices, none of which is helpful. Representative, please! The only thing worse than a voice-activated decision tree is getting transferred to a live person who just happens to live in a foreign country and who is obviously responding off a script. If I ask to talk to a supervisor, I'm told there is no supervisor available! Don't these companies care about their customers? (Insert your own swear word here!) Artificial intelligence that's real So I must say I was absolutely shocked to hear a demonstration of AI being used by eHealth to start the process of guiding seniors to the appropriate choices for Medicare programs. For many years, eHealth has been a popular health insurance marketplace that helps people find the right insurance coverage by comparison-shopping plans from more than 180 insurers for coverage ranging from Medicare Advantage and supplemental plans to individual and family health policies, along with other benefits such as dental and vision. Many people access eHealth through its website, Others use their toll-free number 1-800-EHEALTH (1-800-343-2584) to reach their licensed and helpful insurance agents. Getting to the agent licensed in your state of residence, and knowledgeable about your specific product request, could take a lot of time during busy days around Medicare enrollment. And what about calls that come in late at night? That's why eHealth created 'Alice' — an AI 'agent' who does not actually sell insurance policies but who asks relevant questions to direct you to the correct licensed agent. You'd swear that you are talking to a live person, since 'her' responses are not only appropriate but friendly. Listening to the demo that eHealth sent me, I was absolutely blown away. I knew that you'd want to hear the same thing, so if you are reading this column online at my website you can click on this link in the article. In this case, an audio demo is worth a thousand words! Even if you're not shopping for health insurance, I recommend listening to this short clip of an interaction between someone calling the toll-free line late at night and the AI agent, Alice. This company has taken AI to the next level. Suddenly, you'll understand how much more helpful an AI agent can be than a call center in the middle of nowhere! And, on a personal level, you'll see how AI has so much potential to change our lives for the better (yes, or for the worse). I spoke with Ketan Babaria, chief digital and AI officer of eHealth. He notes that while AI is not (yet) selling policies, it is making a big difference in their processes: 'Our new AI agents are trained to be patient, caring and sympathetic. As a result, we are making it easier and faster for people to start the shopping process for a Medicare plan, enabling them to more quickly connect with a licensed agent who can help them comparison shop for the right health coverage.' So the next time you hear that your call will be answered by AI, don't hang up in fear, hoping that the next time you'll get a 'real person.'
