When is 2025 NHL Draft? Start time, draft order for first round
The New York Islanders lucked out when they won the draft lottery and jumped from 10th place to No. 1 overall.
Mathieu Darche was even luckier because he wasn't even with the Islanders that day. He was hired as the team's general manager 18 days later.
That's why he plans to hang on to the pick during the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft on Friday, June 27.
"I've been pretty fortunate," he told reporters earlier this week. "Usually when you pick a player at No. 1, you get a special player. I'm going to get a great player who's going to push our organization forward."
Darche didn't tip his hand on his pick. He called Erie (Pennsylvania) Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the top-ranked player, "an impressive young man" but noted that other players he met during the interview process also have been impressive.

Dylan Harper's mom goes viral at 2025 NBA Draft after Spurs selection
The post Dylan Harper's mom goes viral at 2025 NBA Draft after Spurs selection appeared first on ClutchPoints. New San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper had a night to remember at the 2025 NBA Draft, but it was his mom, Maria Harper, who unexpectedly became the star of the show. As the 19-year-old shooting guard made his way across the stage after being picked second overall by the San Antonio Spurs, the cameras zoomed in on his family—and social media exploded with excitement. Advertisement Fans took to platforms like X to express their admiration for Maria's grace and elegance during her son's big moment. The reactions were a wonderful blend of awe and appreciation, with many people declaring her the true star of the evening. Her appearance alongside Dylan and his brother, Ron Jr., during a live interview with ESPN's Monica McNutt only fueled the viral excitement. But beyond the fleeting fame, Maria Harper has been a cornerstone in Dylan's basketball journey. A former Division I player at the University of New Orleans, she shifted gears to coaching nearly thirty years ago. Maria wasn't just a coach; she was a constant source of support for Dylan, guiding him from first grade all the way through his senior year in high school. Advertisement Their strong connection was clear when she talked about his 'determination, hard work, and humility' during the ESPN interview. Dylan, who shone at Rutgers and followed in the footsteps of his father, five-time NBA champion Ron Harper, has made it clear in past interviews that his mom was his first and most significant coach. Interestingly, Ron Harper Sr. remained seated in the crowd while Maria took the spotlight with Dylan during the broadcast. This choice highlighted the family dynamic, with Dylan crediting his mom for pushing him to excel and keeping him grounded. Maria supported Dylan's development as a student-athlete and as a person in her role as a former athlete, coach, and mentor. Advertisement Now that Dylan is beginning a new journey with the NBA, he will always remember his draft night—not only because he was drafted by the Spurs, but because this was a truly special moment demonstrating the power of a parent's support. Noah Dobson trade grades: Who won the Islanders and Canadiens deal?
We have a big pre-NHL draft trade that was discussed a bunch on Friday as we get ready for the 2025 edition of the draft: the New York Islanders sent defenseman Noah Dobson (a homegrown stud who was the 12th overall pick in 2018) to the Montreal Canadiens, who are getting another good D-man to add to their blue line that has Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson. This made sense for the Islanders if they weren't giving Dobson a long-term deal given that he was a pending restricted free agent. For the Canadiens? They're taking steps in the right direction for their rebuild. Advertisement As we do around here, let's hand out some grades to each team for this one: Canadiens and Islanders trade details: CANADIENS GET: D Noah Dobson (who got an 8-year contract with an AAV of $9.5 million) ISLANDERS GET: F Emil Heineman, the 16th and 17th overall picks in the 2025 NHL draft Islanders trade grade Dobson is seriously talented, even if his points dipped last season. But if the Islanders weren't re-signing him to a long-term deal, it made sense to deal him. And this haul? It's pretty darn good: TWO first-rounders and Heineman, who was a 2020 second-rounder. He scored 10 goals in his first full-time season last year, and maybe there's more untapped potential here for a 23-year-old with that draft pedigree. Advertisement If you have to deal a top-tier defenseman, this is the kind of return you should get back. It's just a bummer for a team that could use him as they try to get back to the postseason. GRADE: B+ Canadiens trade grade Montreal is on the rise, with their first stop in the playoffs since 2021. And Dobson will anchor the blue line with Hutson for years, which is a formidable pairing. That said, giving up two first-rounders and a former second-round forward is A LOT, plus the giant extension. But that's the price you pay for a talent like Dobson and for moving toward contention.
