US condemns French inquiry into Musk's social media platform X

US officials condemned France's criminal investigation into the social network X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, after Paris cybercrime prosecutors said they were examining complaints in France that the X algorithm had been used for foreign interference in French politics.
US officials issued a harsh condemnation Friday of France's criminal investigation into the social network X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, on suspicion of foreign interference.
'As part of a criminal investigation, an activist French prosecutor is requesting information on X's proprietary algorithm and has classified X as an 'organized crime group,'' the US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor wrote on their X account.
'Democratic governments should allow all voices to be heard, not silence speech they dislike. The United States will defend the free speech of all Americans against acts of foreign censorship.'
Paris cybercrime prosecutors called for the police probe July 11 to investigate suspected crimes—including manipulating and extracting data from automated systems 'as part of a criminal gang.'
The social media company last week denied the allegations, calling them 'politically motivated.'

X also said it had refused to comply with the prosecutor's request to access its recommendation algorithm and real-time data.
The investigation follows two January complaints that alleged the X algorithm had been used for foreign interference in French politics.
One of the complaints came from Eric Bothorel, an MP from President Emmanuel Macron's centrist party, who complained of 'reduced diversity of voices and options' and Musk's 'personal interventions' in the platform's management since he took it over.
X said it 'categorically denies' all allegations and that the probe 'is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech.'
Tesla and SpaceX chief Musk has raised hackles with his forays into European politics, including vocal backing for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of February legislative elections.

'Democracy is too fragile to let digital platform owners tell us what to think, who to vote for or even who to hate,' Bothorel said after the investigation was announced.

Samuel L. Jackson Joins Wind Campaign After Trump Criticism

Actor Samuel L. Jackson joined a campaign by Swedish energy company Vattenfall AB to promote offshore wind farms, marking the latest area of disagreement between the Pulp Fiction star and the US President. 'These giants are standing tall against fossil fuels — rising up out of the ocean like a middle finger to CO2,' Jackson says in a one-minute video released by Vattenfall Wednesday, a day after Donald Trump called windmills a 'disgrace' during a visit to Scotland.

Ontario officially cancels Starlink contract, won't say how much that cost taxpayers

TORONTO - Ontario has officially cancelled its $100-million contract with Starlink, but the province refuses to say how much it cost taxpayers to get out of the deal. Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce confirmed the cancellation, but did not answer numerous questions about the kill fee the province will have to pay Elon Musk's SpaceX. Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma announced the deal last year to deliver high-speed internet to 15,000 residents in rural and northern Ontario. The deal would have also included Starlink internet for remote First Nations. Lecce says the province is working on another high-speed internet solution. Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to kill the deal in February if U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods were imposed, and he ultimately pulled the deal in March when U.S. President Donald Trump implemented those tariffs. Italy summons Russian ambassador over 'Russophobe' list naming president

ROME (Reuters) -The Italian government said on Wednesday that it would summon the Russian ambassador to protest against President Sergio Mattarella being included in a list compiled by Moscow of Western leaders accused of anti-Russian sentiment. "Publishing a list of so-called 'Russophobes' who supposedly incite hatred against Russia is yet another propaganda operation," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a statement. On July 24, the Russian Foreign Ministry published a list of what it called "hate speech" against Russia by members of Western elites in which it included a statement from Mattarella at Aix-Marseille University last February. In his speech, the Italian president drew a parallel between Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the expansionist wars of Nazi Germany. The Russian Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Italy has traditionally had close political and economic ties with Russia. However, after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, the relationship deteriorated, and Rome has firmly stood by Kyiv. According to Meloni, Moscow broke international law by invading Ukraine and Western countries have condemned Russia. Mattarella is the only Italian in the list, which also includes German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, the Secretary-General of NATO Mark Rutte, and the President of France Emmanuel Macron.
