Van den Berg strikes twice as South Africa beat Italy
But much-improved Italy outscored the record four-time World Cup winners by three tries to two in the second half despite fielding an experimental team with numerous first choices remaining in Europe.
Victory continued the 100 percent record of South Africa when hosting Italy, but it was the second smallest winning margin in eight Tests since 1999.
The other Springbok try scorers were captain and centre Jesse Kriel, winger Kurt-Lee Arendse, replacement prop Vincent Koch and flanker Marco van Staden.
It was a special moment for tighthead Koch when he barged over as he notched his first try for South Africa while winning his 62nd cap.
The outstanding try came from Arendse, who raced through the Italian defence from midfield to score after Test debutant Vincent Tshituka won a lineout.
Veteran fly-half Handre Pollard slotted all six conversions, raising his total for the Springboks to 784 points in 81 Tests.
Flanker Manuel Zuliani, replacement hooker Pablo Dimcheff on debut and captain and lock Niccolo Cannone scored tries for the Azzurri.
Fly-half Giacomo Da Re kicked three conversions and a penalty for Italy, whose starting line-up included only five of the team beaten by Ireland in their last 2025 Six Nations Championship match.
When Da Re converted the Cannone try with 11 minutes remaining, there were only 11 points between the teams, raising the possibility of a stunning victory for the visitors.
But the Springboks put the outcome beyond doubt on 74 minutes when Van Staden powered his way over the line and Pollard maintained his perfect record from the kicking tee.
The second Test is scheduled for Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in eastern coastal city Gqeberha next Saturday.

World champions Springboks to play Japan at Wembley
Japan, then as now coached by Eddie Jones, overcame the Springboks 34-32 in an absolute thriller of a match in Brighton. South Africa have gone on to beat the 'Brave Blossoms' twice since then, both times in Japan, as well as being crowned world champions in 2019 and 2023 giving them a record four victories in the sport's quadrennial showpiece. Jones, who in between his stints as Japan handler had a rollercoaster spell with England losing to the 'Boks in the 2019 World Cup final but was fired in late 2022, said the 'Miracle of Brighton' had been a game changer for the sport. "The game in Brighton 10 years ago changed rugby in Japan from being a minor sport to a boom sport," said Jones. "Playing against the Boks is the dream of every young Japanese player." His Springbok counterpart Rassie Erasmus said it was a most welcome challenge ahead of their traditional November clashes with northern hemisphere heavyweights. "We are delighted to be starting off our tour of the Northern Hemisphere with a match against Japan at the iconic Wembley Stadium," said Erasmus in a South Africa Rugby statement. "Especially ahead of a challenging tour which kicks off a week later with the first official Test of the November window against France in Paris. "The Brave Blossoms are renowned for playing fast, attacking, high-tempo rugby -– which has been prevalent in our last two encounters, before and during the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019." Wembley has hosted 11 rugby matches over the years, starting with England's 26-13 win over Canada in 1992. Wales hosted six games there, including their Five Nations matches in 1998 and 1999, while the old Cardiff Arms Park was being rebuilt. A revamped Wembley also featured a couple of games during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, though both lacked the drama of the Japan and Boks pool match. The last time the Boks played at Wembley was a 31-31 against the Barbarians draw in 2016. Erasmus's side will have already played in England ahead of the Japan match, as they face Argentina in the final round of the Rugby Championship at Twickenham on October 4.

South Africa ring changes after Australia defeat in Rugby Championship
Head coach Rassie Erasmus announced the new-look team on Tuesday and said the Springboks were determined to "get things right" after their shock 38-22 defeat against the same opponents in Johannesburg last weekend. Four of the changes were because of injuries to captain Siya Kolisi as well as wings Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe and flank Pieter-Steph du Toit. Centre Jesse Kriel, one of five survivors from the Johannesburg defeat, will captain the team for the second time in his career. Prop Ox Nche, who also played last Saturday, will be vice-captain for the first time. "We lost four players to injury, which obviously had an impact on a few of our selections but we also know where we went wrong against Australia last week," said Erasmus. The Springboks opted for experience with Willie le Roux at full-back and Handre Pollard at fly-half, while Damian de Allende has recovered from injury and will reunite with Kriel in one of South Africa's most successful centre pairings. Le Roux, Pollard and De Allende have a total of 271 caps between them. There is also a return to a 6-2 forwards-backs split on the bench with Erasmus able to call on a powerful back-up tight five which includes lock Eben Etzebeth, South Africa's most-capped player.
