IGU receives backing from Sports Ministry to organise first-ever Indian Golf Premier League

New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has given Indian Golf Union (IGU), the National Sports Federation (NSF) for golf, a go ahead to organise the inaugural edition of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), which intends to make the sport more accessible to youngsters, in January 2026. The League is being organised in partnership with Bharat Golf Private Limited.
A delegation of Indian Golf Union led by Major General (Retd) Bibhuti Bhushan, along with members of the IGPL Board and Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) secretary general Champika Sayal met with the Honourable Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Hon'ble Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday for a meaningful discussion on how to promote golf as a discipline at the grassroots level and the roadmap for Indian Golf Premier League.
Talking about the meeting, IGU director general Bibhuti Bhushan said: 'It was a moment of great pride and honour for the Indian Golf Union to meet both the Hon'ble Union Sports Minister and Tourism Minister at their residence and understand the government's vision on strengthening the sports ecosystem in Bharat. I can say with utmost pleasure that the Sports Ministry has given us the nod to organise the first-ever Indian Golf Premier League, which aims at popularising the sport in Bharat. The IGPL will be organised in January 2026. Through IGPL, we will scout and nurture world-class golf talent who will proudly represent Bharat on the global stage.'
IGPL is a city-based franchise league that will have both amateurs and professionals playing in a team format. The IGPL envisions providing international-standard training facilities and coaching to over 10 lakh school and college students within the next three years. (ANI)

Soccer-Tottenham's Son bids emotional farewell in S.Korea, Maddison suffers knee injury
SEOUL (Reuters) -Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min played what is expected to be his final match for the club in front of 64,773 fans at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Sunday, and teammate James Maddison was carried off with a knee injury. He led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with their win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May. Sunday's friendly against Newcastle United ended 1-1, with Spurs forward Brennan Johnson scoring in the fourth minute and Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes equalising in the 38th. Son was substituted off in the 65th minute for new signing Mohammed Kudus. Son received a guard of honour from both Spurs and Newcastle players, along with a warm ovation from the crowd, as he bade a teary farewell. He is expected to stay in South Korea while the rest of the Spurs players fly to London. "At first, I really didn't think I was going to cry. But obviously, it is not easy leaving a team I've spent so much time with," Son said. "And hearing from all these players made me really emotional. I've had an unforgettable day thanks to all the fans, my teammates and my opponents. I feel so happy that I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight. "My career is not over yet, and I want to continue to bring (the fans) joy. I know I have more things I want to accomplish as a football player." Son joined the north London club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and though he did not disclose his next destination, British media have linked him with a move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. Maddison came on in the 75th minute but went down off the ball, clutching his knee, and appeared to be in considerable discomfort. I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal," Frank said. Maddison suffered an injury to the same knee in May and missed the final part of last season. The club later announced the loan signing of midfielder Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. The pre-season friendly in South Korea between the Premier League teams ended 1-1, with the high point being Son's second-half exit in likely his last game for Tottenham. The 33-year-old captain was surrounded by both sets of players before eventually sitting on the bench in tears. 'First we had the walk around and then the teammates gathered around and he was emotional,' Tottenham coach Thomas Frank said. 'In the changing room it was more of the same. I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful.' Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also paid tribute to the South Korea forward. 'The reaction was instinctive from my players. I think that speaks volumes about him,' Howe said. 'I think he's seen as one of the game's great Premier League players. It's not just the talent he has but the way he has carried himself over the years.'
