Arrested Osceola County sheriff's co-defendant connected to previous illegal gambling investigations

Thursday marked one week since now-suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested. He's accused of protecting and expanding a multimillion-dollar illegal gambling operation in Lake and Osceola counties. As of Thursday, Lopez had not posted his $1 million bail and remains in the Lake County Jail while three of his co-defendants were released on bail. Sheldon Wetherholt, 58, is among the three co-defendants who have bailed out. According to state records, Wetherholt managed the Kissimmee-based Eclipse Social Club at the center of the investigation. Channel 9 learned that while Wetherholt doesn't have a criminal history, he was tied to another investigation into illegal casinos in 2022. State records list Wetherholt as the manager of Game X Arcade LLC. Investigators with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office said the LLC operated multiple illegal casinos. That business eventually shut down in 2023 after court records show the owner, Dhara Bhalodia, was arrested on more than 150 counts related to operating an illegal casino. An arrest document accuses Bhalodia of committing money laundering while 'operating the gaming businesses in plain sight.' Wetherholt was named in Bhalodia's arrest affidavit but never faced any charges in the Palm Beach County case. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. Permitless concealed carry bill heads to NC governor despite bipartisan opposition

A proposal allowing people 18 and older to carry concealed guns without a permit in North Carolina will reach the governor's desk on Friday. It narrowly passed the House last night despite bipartisan opposition. Channel 9's Evan Donovan delved into the bill and its chances of becoming law. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Both sides weigh in on statewide concealed carry legislation One pro-gun rights group he spoke with said the bill is just certifying an existing right. 'It removes the need for that governmental permission slip,' said Paul Valone with Grassroots NC. However, groups that support more gun control disagree with that sentiment. 'There are many laws that people break, but is that a reason not to have a law in the first place? I mean, that's just that's insane,' said Becky Ceartas with North Carolinians Against Gun Violence. In a 2022 study, Johns Hopkins University found that states that relaxed their gun laws to no longer include live-firearm training saw an 18.3% increase in the average rate of gun assaults. But some argue that the bill will help law-abiding gun owners to protect themselves. 'The bottom line is, criminals will carry anyway. All we're doing, once again, as we have done before, is to allow the law-abiding to remain law-abiding,' said Valone. Federal and state laws have long allowed restrictions on carrying concealed firearms. As the Supreme Court noted in the 2008 opinion, which cemented the individual right to bear arms. Ceartas, however, said the current permit requirements are an important catch. 'It's still a felony or a crime for them to carry concealed, but we would not know that without a background check,' said Ceartas. Similar efforts have failed in the past, including in 2023, when North Carolina Senate Leader Phil Berger opposed it. An Elon University poll also found 54% of North Carolinians oppose permitless concealed carry, with 34% in support. The bill passed along party lines, except for two republicans in the state house, who voted against it. However, many lawmakers expect Governor Josh Stein to veto it. And without those two votes, plus at least one democrat changing sides, it will be hard for republicans to get this bill into law. VIDEO: Both sides weigh in on statewide concealed carry legislation

Charlotte man accused of trying to sexually assault woman after helping her with groceries

Court records obtained by Channel 9 this week say a man offered to help a woman with her groceries before trying to sexually assault her in her own apartment. It happened last week after the woman got off the bus along Monroe Road. Channel 9 Crime Reporter Hunter Sáenz learned that the woman fought back. Kristopher Davis was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree sexual offense. Police say the victim is a woman who is developmentally disabled. 'I think it always hits home a little bit more when it's someone who we know is especially vulnerable,' said Leanna Pai, who works with survivors at Safe Alliance. The domestic and sexual violence resource center says roughly 80% of women with disabilities say they've been sexually assaulted. That's 40% higher than their non-disabled counterparts. 'Someone who is an abuser or might assault someone can definitely take advantage of physical limitations, or cognitive limitations,' Pai told Sáenz. The victim told police she got off a bus with her groceries and Davis walked up, introduced himself, and insisted on helping her carry her groceries. When they got to her apartment, she told police that Davis insisted on coming inside. When he did, he told her, 'Now I'm going to have oral sex with you,' according to court records. Davis is then accused of 'smacking her twice' and also grabbed for her clothing, court documents say. She told officers she was able to run out screaming, and that got the attention of someone at the leasing office, who came outside -- that spooked off Davis. Police say that when the victim went to get help, Davis ran away. He was later caught and taken into custody and held on a $100,000 secured bond. He was then transferred to another county to face additional charges there. Pai says she wants women to know they have a safe place they can go. Safe Alliance has a 24-hour hope line that survivors can call for support and resources. That number is 980-771-HOPE and it's available in English and Spanish.
