Youth must discern between perception and reality in fight against corruption, says MACC chief
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner cautioned that with rapid technological advancement and the influence of social media, society is often swayed by perception rather than truth.
'Perception is easy to accept, but reality is more difficult to digest.
'The challenge for today's generation is to evaluate and balance between what is mere perception and what is the actual reality,' he said when addressing the Anti-Corruption Student Convention here on Saturday (Aug 16).
Azam said corruption has long posed a threat to the country's development, with early cases in the 1960s involving law enforcement and politics.
Today, he added, corruption is more complex and widespread, particularly in the public sector, enforcement and business.
He recalled a 2003 survey by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia which found that 30% of university students were willing to accept bribes if offered a position.
'Imagine where those 30% people are now, perhaps as civil servants, businesspeople, politicians or even criminals.
'If the mentality of society is to condone what is wrong, the country will head towards destruction,' he said.
Azam stressed that political will was crucial to the fight against corruption, pointing out that nations plagued by systemic graft have eventually collapsed.
'History shows that if a government does not have the resolve to fight corruption, the nation will fall,' he said.
Azam, who has served in the civil service for more than four decades, also praised the country's current leadership for steering Malaysia back towards being a respected nation internationally.
'I am not flattering anyone, but as a government officer, I can see that the leadership today is among the best to bring our nation towards becoming respected again in the world,' he added.
Thanking Multimedia University for partnering in the anti-corruption convention, Azam said the MACC could not work alone in tackling corruption and needed the support of all parties, particularly the younger generation.
'You are the ones who will shape this country in the next 10, 20 years. We want to build a generation that is creative, discerning and committed to integrity,' he said.

"Keep your knowledge up to date, do not hesitate to ask questions, and report anything suspicious, because digital safety is not just an individual responsibility but a shared duty for all Malaysians,' he added. Meanwhile, Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who also voiced his support for the campaign, said continuous education across all levels of society is essential to help people avoid falling victim to such crimes. "Campaigns like this should be fully utilised so that the public will be more cautious and able to distinguish between what is good and what is not. "Authorities can also step forward to share more information with the public about the modus operandi of these syndicates so that people are not easily victimised,' he said. Johor Regent steps in with key info to help MACC as probe into military links in smuggling syndicate intensifies
CYBERJAYA, Aug 17 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed yesterday Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail had provided information that assisted the investigations under Op Sohor, which are currently still ongoing. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Regent also wanted to curb smuggling at the country's borders. 'I would like to inform that His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Johor as Regent of Johor, has been very cooperative in this matter and wants such activities to be curbed,' he told the media after the close of the Anti-Corruption Graduates Convention (Komawar) here yesterday, adding that the syndicate is believed to be focused only in the southern region of the country with no new arrests being made. 'I expect so far there has been no (new arrests), if there are any links, (for instance) when we look into money laundering it might be possible there are other parties benefitting from this activity, and if so, we will investigate further,' he said. He also said that the commission was looking into the reasons behind the existence of the online media company that two of the suspects arrested under Op Sohor were working for and confirmed that both suspects were not from any mainstream media. 'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of Komawar that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instil values and build character among university students. The biennial Komawar's objective is to shape a generation of graduates to reject corruption and allow youth to support integrity and transparency in the country's administration, he added. — Bernama
