
Growing Risk of 'Thirstwaves' as the Planet Warms
The atmosphere is getting thirstier. A new study finds that warming is leading to more frequent bouts of hot, dry weather that cause soils to lose large volumes of water to evaporation.
The growing number of 'thirstwaves' poses a challenge to farmers, researchers say. 'As these pressures grow, there's less and less room for guesswork in irrigation, so if you are under limited water conditions, you've got to do a better job at really tracking your water,' said lead author Meetpal Kukal, of the University of Idaho.
Researchers define a 'thirstwave' as three days in a row of unusually high 'evaporative demand' — that is, when hot, dry, sunny conditions cause the atmosphere to draw more water from plants, soils, and waterways.
For the new study, researchers analyzed four decades of thirstwaves across the U.S. They found that, since 1980, thirstwaves have gotten 7 percent longer, 17 percent more intense, and 23 percent more frequent, and are also increasingly arising during the growing season.
The study, published in Earth's Future, follows on a recent paper in Nature Reviews that likened the atmosphere to an enormous sponge. As the planet warms, authors wrote, the sponge is growing larger and soaking up more moisture, leading to severe drought, and also unleashing more water, leading to intense rainfall. The result is sharper swings from dry to wet.
The effect is worldwide, authors found. Weather 'whiplash,' said lead author Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA, 'may turn out to be one of the more universal global changes on a warming Earth.'

Mental recovery from COVID often takes longer than physical healing, study finds
A new study from UCLA researchers has found that while people with COVID-19 symptoms typically recovered physically within three months, many continued to struggle with mental well-being for up to nine months. Even a year later, one in five participants still reported poor overall health. Published Tuesday in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, the study tracked more than 1,400 individuals who experienced COVID-like symptoms between December 2020 and August 2022. About 75% of the participants tested positive for the virus. Over a year, researchers surveyed them every three months on key aspects of health-related quality of life, including sleep, fatigue, cognitive function and social engagement. The findings revealed a significant gap between physical and mental recovery. While most participants regained physical health within the first three months, improvements in mental health — particularly in areas such as anxiety, depression and fatigue — progressed more slowly, with the most noticeable gains occurring between six and nine months after illness. 'The findings showed that health care professionals need to pay more attention to their patients' mental well-being after a COVID-19 infection and provide more resources that will help improve their mental health, in addition to their physical health,' said Lauren Wisk, co-lead author and assistant professor of medicine at UCLA. Participants fell into four health categories: optimal health, poor mental health, poor physical health and poor overall well-being. Among those with the worst outcomes, 42% identified as having long COVID — highlighting a strong connection between long COVID and lasting health struggles. Surprisingly, those who tested positive for COVID were slightly more likely to return to full health than those who tested negative. Researchers suggest this could be due to undiagnosed conditions or false-negative test results. "Future research should focus on how to improve the treatment models of care for patients who continue to experience COVID-19 symptoms and their impact on patients' quality of life, especially as 1-in-5 patients may continue to suffer over a year after their initial infection, which likely reflects long COVID," Wisk said.

How this Dutch startup is helping paralyzed patients move again
In 2012, when a tree fell on her family's car, Jessie Owen's life transformed. Both of her parents died, and the then-27-year-old Owen was paralyzed. 'I lost everything overnight: my independence, career, home,' she says. 'And it's hard to rank them, but losing my autonomy to control my own body was up there.' Her spinal cord injury left her with some limited movement, but fine motor skills were especially challenging. Then, a few years ago, she took part in a clinical study of new technology: a device called ARC-EX, which temporarily attaches electrodes to the skin to stimulate sensory nerves in the spine. After a few weeks of therapy, Owen could tie her shoes, open a jar of peanut butter, and drink from a glass without a straw. 'There's a quiet dignity in needing less help,' she says. Results of the study appeared in Nature Medicine last year, showing improvements in hand strength or function among 90% of participants. Owen also saw her blood pressure stabilize, and she no longer had neuropathic pain. In the past, after an injury, patients with quadriplegia typically got three months of rehab and were then told nothing more could be done. The study showed it was possible to help people with 34-year-old injuries. The device, which spun out of research at UCLA, became the first of its kind to get FDA clearance last December. Headquartered in the Netherlands, the medical tech company Onward is bringing ARC-EX to market, with plans to use it at 10 clinics before it becomes widely available later this year. The company is also running studies on an implantable version and a third platform with a brain-computer interface that can help people move again using their thoughts.
