What Happened The Last Time Rajat Patidar & Shreyas Iyer Faced Off In A T20 Final?

Last Updated: Rajat Patidar and Shreyas Iyer lead their teams in the IPL 2025 final, aiming to end an 18-year title drought. Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Rajat Patidar taking on his Punjab Kings counterpart Shreyas Iyer in the final of a T20 league isn't new. Crowned captains for the first time of both the franchises, Patidar and Iyer trumped some of the big names in the game and are now all set to break an 18-year-long title drought. If we rewind around six months, Patidar and Iyer were going head-to-head in the finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India's premier domestic tournament. Much like IPL 2025, the duo had taken over captaincy responsibilities afresh in this season, with Patidar replacing Shubham Sharma, and Iyer his senior pro Ajinkya Rahane. Iyer won the toss in the SMAT Final and put Madhya Pradesh in to bat first at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Having been retained by RCB, most of the stands were cheering for Patidar. But MP were reduced to 6/2 in just the second over as Shardul Thakur picked both the openers. Subhranshu Senapati and Harpreet Singh then added 42 runs for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed by Atharva Ankolekar in the eighth over. MP were soon reduced to 84/4 before Patidar and Venkatesh Iyer added 32 runs for the fifth wicket. The latter was dismissed by Suryansh Shedge in the 13th over, followed by a 56-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Patidar and Rahul Batham. After the latter was dismissed by Royston Dias in the 18th over, MP couldn't build any more partnerships and managed to post 174/8 in their 20 overs, with Patidar scoring a 40-ball 81, at a stunning strike rate of 202.5. In the chase, Mumbai lost Prithvi Shaw in the second over. Rahane and Shreyas then added 32 runs for the second wicket before the latter was dismissed by Tripuresh Singh in the fifth over. Rahane and Suryakumar Yadav then built a match-winning 52-run partnership for the third wicket before Venkatesh dismissed the former in the 12th over. Mumbai were soon reduced to 129/5 in the 15th over, before Ankolekar and Shedge added 41 runs for the sixth wicket to take their team over the line and bag the trophy. Shreyas Iyer vs Rajat Patidar in a final isn't new; their last title clash before IPL 2025 ended in a dramatic finish

When Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar walk out for the toss in Ahmedabad, it won't be the first time they've gone head-to-head in a high-pressure final. The captain duo in the IPL 2025 summit clash between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru is a sequel to a riveting showdown from domestic cricket's biggest T20 night last year, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 Final. That clash, held at RCB's own M Chinnaswamy Stadium, had plenty of subplots. Iyer, leading Mumbai, was in full control. Patidar, captaining Madhya Pradesh, produced a valiant effort with the bat; a blistering, unbeaten 81 off just 40 balls, after MP's top and middle order fumbled. His knock, laced with six boundaries and two sixes, rescued MP to a respectable 174/8. But the scoreboard didn't tell the full story. Mumbai's bowling attack, driven by Tushar Deshpande, Royston Dias, Atharva Ankolekar, and the impressive Suryansh Shedge, applied the squeeze just long enough before the carnage began. And in the chase, Mumbai's experienced top order made sure it counted. Suryakumar Yadav smashed 48 off 35 with his usual flair, while Ajinkya Rahane provided calm in the middle with a polished 37. While Shreyas Iyer could only score 16 off nine deliveries, the moment belonged to Suryansh Shedge, whose unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls sealed the deal. He was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance that night, helping Mumbai cruise to 180/5 in 17.5 overs. Now, in the IPL final, the stakes are unimaginably higher. A title-starved franchise, a nation-wide audience, and two captains who've met on this tightrope before. Back then, it was Iyer who smiled last. The script could be different this time, if recent history is considered a denominator. RCB had thumped Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in Qualifier 1, reducing them for just 101 in 14.1 overs and chasing the target with relative ease. However, the PBKS did make a strong comeback to beat Mumbai Indians to setup a rematch in the all-important final. RCB's last final was in 2016 when they faced a disappointing defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Punjab, meanwhile, will play in their first final since 2014, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar Before they crossed paths as captains in IPL 2025 Final, Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar had already shared a high-stakes showdown in domestic cricket. Batting first, Madhya Pradesh posted 174 for 8 in 20 overs, a competitive score on paper. Patidar led from the front with a blistering 61 not out off 30 balls, striking six fours and two sixes.
