The Best of Everything by Kit de Waal review – a warm story of second starts

The Guardian06-04-2025

Paulette, the protagonist of Kit de Waal's latest novel, isn't perfect: she can be judgmental and stubborn; she often speaks sharply; and she probably drinks too much Appleton rum. But De Waal's candid narration makes it difficult not to love her.
The Best of Everything is the Birmingham-born author's sixth book and her first novel for adults since 2018's The Trick to Time. She made her name with her 2016 debut, My Name Is Leon, which established her as a writer full of heart.
We meet Paulette, who came to Britain from St Kitts as a child, when she is 29. It's the 1970s and she is an auxiliary nurse. For work she wears 'shoes so sensible they could pass A-level maths'. At home she's desperately in love with Denton, whose 'smell is pure man – sweat, soap and sex'. That's until the worst happens: he is killed in a car crash. Worse still, after his death Paulette learns he has a wife and children he hadn't told her about.
All of this happens disconcertingly rapidly, at the beginning. Then, within a page, Paulette is living with Denton's best friend, with whom she has a son called Bird. This is the backdrop to the core relationships Paulette forms in this tale: with Frank, the man who killed Denton in the crash, and Frank's grandson, Nellie, who is about Bird's age and doesn't have a mother of his own.
De Waal's tone is warm and wise. She has a knack for the small charming moment, such as when Frank and Nellie arrive late for Christmas dinner at Paulette's. When she opens the door, Frank is wearing oven gloves and holding out a cake tin, which he quickly withdraws. 'Rather too hot at the moment,' he says. 'We had to wait for it to be cooked. We timed it but may have been somewhat over-optimistic.' It's equal parts sitcom material and – when you know that this tie-wearing old man is single-handedly bringing up his grandchild – also devastating.
De Waal is funny too, especially when she inhabits Paulette's consciousness and her character's Caribbean inflections become more pronounced. When her friends try to console her after Denton's death, we get: 'Them with their side-eye. Them with their cleverness … how two and two always makes four but Paulette can't count.' You can just see her rolling her eyes.
Paulette's tenderness towards Frank and Nellie feels unrealistic at first, while her outbursts elsewhere seem unjustified. But, as she eases herself out of her protective shell, we come to learn that this is a book about forgiveness. And by seeing De Waal's protagonist change some of her ways, we realise that we shouldn't have been so quick to judge her either.

Samuel L Jackson reveals horror moment he was dragged by a subway train

Samuel L Jackson has recalled the terrifying moment he was convinced he was going to die after a freak accident on the subway. In a candid new interview, the Pulp Fiction actor opened up about the moment he was 'dragged by a subway train' when he was younger, sharing that he never got the sensation of his life flashing before his eyes. During an appearance on Paloma Faith's Mad Sad Bad podcast, the 76-year-old unpacked his ordeal, declaring: 'That whole thing about your life passing before you, it's like, 'Eh, not really,'. Everything does slow down, though. 'I got dragged by a subway train in New York in 1990. I got dragged by the A train. Fortunately, I was in the middle door of the last car, and it was a long-ass train station. 'When the door closed on my foot, train took off. I'm sitting there thinking, 'Oh, f**k, I'm going to die.' 'I could see the tunnel coming, and I couldn't figure out anything that I could grab or hold on to and get close to the train so I wouldn't get killed in the tunnel. 'It just slowed down really, really slow until all of a sudden the train stopped.' Shedding light on his mindset during that moment, Samuel admitted that he was focused on the incident ruining Christmas for his loved ones – including wife LaTonya Richardson and their daughter, Zoe. 'When I was being dragged, all I could think of was, it was going to be a really sad Christmas, because it was like a few days before Christmas,' the Marvel legend continued. 'So I was going to miss my birthday and all that. I was like, 'Damn, it's going to be f**ked up. It's going to be a f**ked up Christmas this year.'' The Django Unchained star was heavily injured in the accident, and tore his ACL and meniscus – he was in physical therapy for over a year and spent 10 months on crutches. He later took legal action and sued the transit system, and was eventually awarded $540k. More Trending It was only when he got to court for a hearing that he learned what happened that day, and that a man rushed to action and saved his life. 'I was a car-and-a-half from the tunnel when it stopped,' he added to Paloma. 'The guy who pulled the emergency cord was on crutches. 'Everybody else in there was trying to open the door, get my foot out the door, push and push and pull and try and take my shoe off. And he was going to the emergency cord, and he finally pulled it and stopped it. 'Things slow down when you're looking at death. I've been in car accidents and if I see them, it's almost like everything is slowing down and you know there's nothing you can do to get out of the way.' Got a story? Tenby Boxing Day Swim presents £4,000 to Tenby RNLI

The record-breaking event saw a huge turn-out of 1,150 swimmers – many in fancy dress to reflect the Superhero theme, in tribute to the RNLI in its 200th anniversary year. Batman, The Incredibles, Wonder Women and the emergency services were all reflected in the crazy costumes. Young Superheroes from Tenby Church in Wales Primary School joined in the fun of the 2024 Boxing Day Swim. (Image: Gareth Davies Photography) The swim has made a donation to Tenby RNLI from every single one of its 52 annual events. The latest donation of £4,000 is the largest-ever made to the charity by swim organisers, the Tenby Sea Swimming Association (TSSA). The TSSA committee made the official presentation of the handsome sum this week, when they were joined by swim sponsors at Tenby Lifeboat station. TSSA chairman Sam Skyrme-Blackhall and president Chris Osborne handed over the cheque to head launcher Joe Glanville, watched by a large number of visitors who had gathered to see the lifeboat, the Haydn Miller, making its weekly exercise launch. Tenby RNLI spokesman Ben James said: "We are extremely grateful for the donation and continued support, having received a donation every year since the swim began." Swim committee members and sponsors were all aboard for the lifeboat presentation. (Image: Gareth Davies Photography) Cllr Skyrme-Blackhall said: 'We were delighted to hand over a cheque to Tenby RNLI to support the amazing work that they do. They always support the swim and we are always eager to help them." "It was wonderful to hear from the crew about how the funding will help here in Tenby. "The Boxing Day Swim goes from strength to strength, getting bigger each year. A huge thanks goes to all the committee, sponsors and swimmers who make this event a big part of our Christmas festivities" The swim's headline sponsors for 2024 were: Lowri's Shop, Harbour Wealth, ND Toy Insurance, the Qube Group, Harbwr Brewery Tap & Kitchen and Tenby and District Lions.

Kat and Alfie's big day arrives in EastEnders next week, but worries about Tommy threaten to derail the celebrations before they even begin. As doubts creep in and tensions boil over, the couple are forced to confront the cracks in their relationship, leading Kat to make a bold decision that leaves Alfie reeling. Meanwhile, it's not just Kat and Alfie facing romantic turmoil. Yolande and Patrick's relationship hits rocky ground, Elaine reflects on her love life over drinks with the girls, and Joel's influence over Tommy takes a troubling turn… Here's a first look at next week in Walford with our new spoilers! Tensions are high at The Vic as Elaine struggles to contain her jealousy over George helping Cindy at The Albert. Just as the ice begins to thaw and Elaine surprises George with a gift honouring his boxing career, the peace is soon shattered when Junior bursts in and reveals that George secretly visited his mother, Sabrina, on Christmas night. George admits Sabrina kissed him, but insists he pulled away. Heartbroken by yet another lie, Elaine throws him out. George goes in search of Junior but instead finds Cindy, who offers a shoulder to cry on. Later, Elaine decides to find George but she's crushed to spot him and Cindy hugging on The Albert's balcony. Meanwhile, Kat is shaken after discovering an explicit video on Alfie's laptop still unaware that Tommy is actually the one who bought it. She decides to confide in Jean, fearing that Alfie's been turning to adult content as their bedroom life has been quiet since his cancer treatment. Later, Alfie plans a romantic dinner, but Kat decides to attempt to seduce him instead.. Caught off-guard, Alfie gently tries to slow things down, leaving Kat hurt, and she storms out. Vicki is left reeling when Amy reveals the real reason Joel is being iced out, confirming that Joel shamed Avani after sleeping with her, and now she's a victim of online bullying. Elsewhere, Yolande feels rejected when Patrick dodges giving her a massage, and Kim is left fuming as her plans for Kat and Alfie's big day aren't going to plan. After a tense night, Elaine takes a breather at the café to collect her thoughts. But things go from bad to worse when she returns to The Albert and Felix drops the bombshell that George and Cindy were seen leaving together, looking very cosy. Reeling, Elaine makes a mysterious phone call, inviting someone to join her. As she waits, a punter named Stephen tries his luck chatting her up, but he's swiftly put in his place when Drew Peacock arrives. Drew gives Elaine a much-needed pep talk. Inspired by his words, she makes a shocking decision that could change everything. Meanwhile, Kat is struggling to make sense of everything, with Jean urging her to talk openly with Alfie. At the same time, Patrick gives Alfie a nudge in the same direction. Eventually, Kat and Alfie sit down for an honest heart-to-heart and begin to bridge the distance between them. But when Kat brings up the explicit video she found on Alfie's laptop, he's baffled until it dawns on him that it must have been Tommy who bought it. Elsewhere, Vicki confides in Ross about Joel's behaviour toward Avani, and they both agree he needs better role models. Later, they're encouraged to see Joel helping Tommy with his wedding speech, hopeful that the budding friendship could steer him in a better direction. And over at No.20, Yolande opens up to Denise about her strained relationship with Patrick, admitting her fear that things between them may never go back to how they once were. It's the big day for Kat and Alfie, but worries about Tommy threaten to cast a dark cloud over their wedding celebrations. Alfie vows to have a serious talk with Tommy, but a string of unexpected setbacks keeps getting in the way, so Kat takes matters into her own hands. Later, Alfie admits he's made a mess of several important wedding preparations, leaving Kat feeling unsure, and she drops a bombshell… the wedding is off. Meanwhile, Denise steps in to support Yolande and Patrick as they navigate the rocky waters of their relationship. Elsewhere, Joel extends an invitation for Tommy to come over after the wedding. Kat's decision leaves Alfie crushed and furious, and he storms out of The Vic. Meanwhile, Elaine, Yolande, and Kat gather for a drink, comparing relationship problems, until Elaine drops some hard truths that shock them all. More Trending Alfie, meanwhile, receives an unexpected pep talk as he wrestles with whether he and Kat can get past this. Kat and Alfie finally sit down to talk. Could the wedding still be on?
