Queensland research finds inhaled vaccine effective tuberculosis protection
There is one available vaccine to protect against TB, developed in 1921, with little known about why the vaccine sometimes stops offering protection in adolescence.
World Health Organisation data revealed 10.8 million new TB infections globally in 2023 and 1.3 million deaths.
The team from James Cook University found that administering a stronger strain of the only existing Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine, or BCG, generated an effective immune response in the lungs.
"This link between how the body repairs the lung after minor injury and how that can lead to better protection against tuberculosis is really what this study is about," associate professor Andreas Kupz, who led the study, said.
TB is primarily spread through the air when a person with active tuberculosis disease coughs, sneezes or speaks.
Dr Kupz said high global rates of TB were in part due to the limited efficacy of the only licensed vaccine, developed to protect adults in 1921 via a shot to the arm.
"Because it is delivered as an injection after birth, it often doesn't produce long-term protection against respiratory infections," he said.
Dr Kupz said the team's research could hold several important implications for the development of a more effective TB vaccine, eventually saving lives.
TB has largely been eradicated from Australia, but is more common in northern Australia, particularly in Cape York and Torres Strait Islands.
The latest available Queensland Health data shows the state treated 189 people for TB infections in 2023.
Dr Kupz said Cape York and the Torres Strait Islands were most susceptible because of their proximity to Papua New Guinea, which experiences high rates of infection.
"Papua New Guinea is actually a hotspot for tuberculosis globally, not just in terms of the numbers of TB they have, but also drug-resistant strains," he said.
Port Moresby-based health advocate Anne Clarke said the 45,000 TB cases recorded in Papua New Guinea in the past year were a significant strain on the health system and economy.
"The exposure of the wider community to this infectious disease agent is about 100 per cent in this town," Dr Clarke said.
"Everybody is affected."
Dr Kupz said he hoped his team's research would eventually lead to more effective protection against infections.
"Pending ethical approvals, we hope to see it go to human trial by the end of 2026 or early 2027," he said.

Neurodivergent uni students fear stereotypes when seeking support, study finds
For neurodivergent student Aaron Valdes, transitioning to university was difficult. He said while Federation University had support available for neurodiverse students, accessing it was tricky. "So, then you try to figure it out yourself without asking people for help because you feel ashamed for not getting it in the first place." To build on Federation University's initiatives to support its neurodivergent students, Mr Valdes created a club on campus. "I felt a sense that there was a community [here], but we were so varied and not represented," he said. The main goal of the Federation University Neurodivergent Club is to support and advocate for students. Mr Valdes has used the club to advocate for a low-sensory space for neurodivergent students dealing with sensory overload, which the university says is under construction. The university also has inclusion officers on campus to assist students who seek help and has created "ND toolkits" for staff and students, which are online resources featuring advice and strategies for navigating tertiary education. Federation University has also surveyed its neurodivergent staff and students to identify key barriers to accessing higher education. Academic Liam Frost-Camilleri said the results were helping the university work with its neurodivergent cohort. The study showed a lack of clear communication, "particularly from lecturers", was a barrier many students identified, and that professional development and training for staff on how best to support neurodivergent students was "sorely needed". "There are a lot of systems that many of these students feel have never really helped them, or they don't feel safe enough to really even disclose that they have neurodivergence," Mr Frost-Camilleri said. The survey found 75 per cent of neurodivergent students said they were used to being self-reliant and 62 per cent said they lacked the confidence to ask for help, while two-thirds feared being labelled or stereotyped if they asked for support. "Some students say, 'I don't go and ask [for help] because I want to see if I can do it by myself first,' rather than get the support," Mr Frost-Camilleri said. "So, it is a problem, [but] there are things that we can do to help support these people." RMIT University PhD student Jeremy Nagel has created an app called Focus Bear to help neurodivergent students with their studies by detecting when they are distracted. "You tell it what you want to do and then it uses AI to check whether the websites that I have open relate to that goal," Mr Nagel said. "The inspiration for it was my own lived experiences, as someone who's autistic and has ADHD. "I found I was getting distracted a lot, and I wanted something that would actually block me from using my computer at night, and also blocked me from accessing emails in the morning until I've done my meditation and my exercise." In conjunction with this tool, Mr Nagel and other students have access to a wide range of resources and spaces that help them access their studies in a way that suits their needs. "It uses the principle of body doubling, which is where you are working next to someone else and you tell them what you're going to work on, and that creates some micro-accountability. "I use that quite often and it really helps me." Mr Valdes reminded people: "You're not alone." "There's a community here and we will lift each other up and we will support each other," he said.

Dr Karl's 'chemical' (but delicious) spag bol technique
It was the start of just another day in the office: morning coffee run, showing everyone my outfit for the day, checking emails… oh and Australian science legend Dr Karl was in the house (wearing a fabulous and very on-brand Periodic Table shirt BTW)! We were lucky enough to talk to Dr Karl about all things food and science – exciting stuff for us food nerds! He enlightened us to the knowledge that his signature dish is spaghetti bolognese (great choice) and even gave us a sciency secret to the perfect spag bol. So what's his secret? The 'Maillard' reaction. What is the Maillard reaction? The Maillard reaction is a chemical reaction in food that occurs when a reducing sugar (eg. glucose, lactose or fructose) reacts with an amino acid (the building blocks of protein) through heat. The sugars and proteins are transformed into new flavours, aromas and colours – particularly that golden brown goodness we're all drawn towards. Every time you cook sear meat, make toast or bake afternoon tea, you use the Maillard reaction (feel free to put food scientist on your resume). While the Maillard reaction and caramelisation often overlap in cooking, they are different chemical reactions. Caramelisation is the pyrolysis of sugar, basically the decomposition of sugar through heat. You can see the magic right here in our easy vanilla butter cake recipe: How Dr Karl uses the Maillard reaction in cooking When Dr Karl makes his signature spag bol, he fries the mince in batches until it undergoes the Maillard reaction. He says: 'It's my 'cooked enough' indicator. I put the lid on and once the bits of mince start hitting the lid, I know I've fried them enough and the meat has undergone the Maillard reaction… and they're delicious. Put the first batch aside and do another batch and another batch.' 'Then the crucial element is time', says Dr Karl We've heard it time and time again but a good bolognese takes hours. Dr Karl adds the fried onions and garlic back into the pot, along with the meat and 'shirtloads of tomatoes' and the final ingredient is… time (no, not thyme). He cooks his bolognese for hours and hours and hours… and hours. Dr Karl explains: 'First couple of hours, you stir so it doesn't stick, then you let a bit of stickiness happen on the bottom – a little bit of burny stuff but not too much, bare minimum.' 'At around the four-hour mark, it goes dark, the colour gets darker, and the volume really drops. At this stage, everyone gets bored and wants to eat it. If I'm by myself I cook it for another couple of hours and it gets more delicious.' But if all fails you can go the opposite route… 'You get meat, pour over tomato sauce, put it on pasta and call it bolognese… but no, that's not bolognese', says Dr Karl.
