Grieving mum sues funeral home after son's body shown 'covered with maggots'
The memorial for Torreon Williams, 24, was held a week after he died in a car accident in Chesapeake, Virginia, in May 2022.
His body was embalmed after his death, a process which typically halts decay enough for the deceased to be shown for up to around seven days.
But Torreon's mother Tabitha was left screaming at the 'shock and horror' of seeing her late son's face and body visibly infested with maggots when she approached his casket, according to a lawsuit she has filed since.
'As mourners approached the body of Torreon Williams, these people noticed that Torreon Williams' body, particularly his face, nose and mouth, were covered with and consumed by clumps of maggots', documents filed for the plaintiffs at court said.
Seeing Ms Williams' reaction, an employee then allegedly put his hands on her and said: 'Don't you make a scene.'
Another employee is said to have refused any responsibility for the situation, commenting that 'flies got to him'.
'The maggots had been on and in Torreon Williams' body for a significant period of time and had been purposely ignored on the day of Torreon Williams' service', the plaintiffs' documents add.
It is also alleged that holes appeared in Torreon's cheek 'that had not existed previously', into which the maggots burrowed.
The defendants, Snellings Funeral Home, are accused of failing to properly clean and disinfect Torreon's body before he was embalmed.
'They provided this family with a grotesque freak show,' attorney Kevin Sharp, who is representing Ms Williams, told local outlet WAVY News. 'Maggots pouring out of this young man's nose. Maggots in his mouth, and on his face.' More Trending
The CEO of Snellings' parent company, Hollomon-Brown Funeral Homes, said in a statement: 'The unexpected passing of Torreon Williams is tragic, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family.
'However, because the events following his death are the subject of ongoing litigation, we do not believe it is appropriate to comment publicly at this time.'
The case is set to be heard by a jury over three days of court hearings next month.

In a social media post today, Trump appeared to hint that he is open to Ukraine launching more attacks on Russia. He suggested that it would be 'impossible' for Ukraine to win the war without attacking Russia. He said: 'It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invader's country. "It's like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defence, but is not allowed to play offence. "There is no chance of winning! It is like that with Ukraine and Russia." Trump sets deadline He set a two-week time frame for assessing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Don told Todd Starnes on Newsmax: "I would say within two weeks we're going to know one way or the other. "After that, we'll have to maybe take a different tack." Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Putin is ready to meet Zelensky only after working through a list of vague "issues". Lavrov said: "Our president has repeatedly said that he is ready to meet, including with Mr Zelensky." But he insisted the meeting would only happen "with the understanding that all issues that require consideration at the highest level will be well worked out". An unhinged Putin Putin's demands throughout the war have remained unchanged. He is adamant that Ukraine give up all of the eastern Donbas region, renounce ambitions to join Nato, remain neutral and keep Western troops out of the country. Meanwhile, Zelensky has said he's ready to meet Putin but only after his allies agree to security guarantees for Ukraine to deter future Russian attacks once the fighting stops. A group of allies led by Britain and France are putting together a military coalition to support the guarantees. Once an outline of the security guarantees is agreed upon, Trump would like to see a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader said. He also warned that both sides were preparing for further fighting. Russia was building up troops on the southern front line and Ukraine was test-launching a new long-range cruise missile, he said.

Tennis legend Serena Williams, 43, has explained how she has managed to shed a remarkable 31 pounds over the past 18 months following the birth of her second child Serena Williams has revealed that she has used a weight loss drug to help her body transformation after having two children. The tennis legend says she has struggled to control her weight since giving birth to her eldest daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017 and then her second daughter Adira River in August 2023. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion and, although she retired from tennis in 2022, she still works out regularly. Nevertheless, Williams decided she wanted to reduce her weight 18 months ago and turned to medication. She has been using Zepbound, a GLP-1-based drug that is similar to other brands like Ozempic and Mounjaro. GLP-1 is short for glucagon-like peptide-1 and is a natural hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite. She has opened up on her decision in an interview with People in which she explained her progress. 'I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained,' the 43-year-old said. 'It was crazy because I'd never been in a place like that in my life where I worked so hard, ate so healthy and could never get down to where I needed to be at. 'I had never taken shortcuts in my career and always worked really hard. I know what it takes to be the best. So it was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked.' Williams has lost a remarkable 31 pounds (14kg) since starting on the drug, which is taken via weekly injections. She began taking it in early 2024, around six months after giving birth to Adira, who she shares with her husband Alexis Ohanian. The American tennis star is now a paid spokesperson for health care company Ro, who make the drug, while Ohanian, who co-founded social media site Reddit, is also an investor. She is now training for a half-marathon and spends plenty of time in the gym working out too. 'I just can do more. I'm more active,' Williams added. 'My joints don't hurt as much. I just feel like something as simple as just getting down is a lot easier for me. And I do it a lot faster. I feel like I have a lot of energy and it's great. I just feel pretty good about it.' Williams took the decision to use the weight loss drug, despite knowing about the stigma around them. 'I've never felt that pressure to maintain a certain appearance,' she said. 'I always felt comfortable at any size, whether I was a lot heavier or not. I do feel like my body didn't like me at that weight. I had pain in my joints and pain in different areas just because of the extra weight that I'm not used to carrying since I had children.'

US factory in Ukraine hit in wave of Russian drone and missile strikes
