Carvalho feeling 'fresh' ahead of new season
But now back fully fit, the former Liverpool man knows exactly what he has to do to impress new Bees head coach Keith Andrews and contribute for the west Londoners.
"I feel good, mentally and physically. I feel fresh," he explained.
"I think the injury came at the right time. Then, it didn't feel like it, but I'm glad I had the surgery when I did.
"I'm excited [about pre-season] to get some more minutes in the tank and be able to get out there and play with a smile on my face, which is what the gaffer wants me to do.
"That, along with the principles he wants us to implement: intensity, counter-press, and everything else that will get us to where we need to be."

On next season, he added: "I'm just taking each day as it comes. I want to be able to play as many games and get as many goal contributions as possible.
"I'm going to have to work hard because the competition is high here, which is what I want, because that brings the best out of me."
Discussing the club's pre-season training camp in Portugal, the country where he was born and grew up, he went on to say: "It's been good: good food, good weather, good people. There's nothing more to ask for.
"It's been tough, especially the days we've had double sessions. The first day we had a double session, I woke up in between sessions, and I didn't even know where I was!
"The new coaches have been great - full of energy, fresh ideas, and they're excited to help everyone here."

Bayern agree deal to sign Liverpool winger Diaz: reports
German champions Bayern Munich have agreed to sign Liverpool winger Luis Diaz in a £65.5 million ($88 million) deal, according to multiple reports on Sunday. Bayern had an initial offer of £59 million rejected by the Premier League champions last week, but their improved bid looks set to bring the Colombia international to the Allianz Arena. Diaz has reportedly been given permission to leave Liverpool's pre-season tour of Asia in order to complete a medical with Bayern.
