Arctic warming spurs growth of carbon-soaking peatlands
Peatlands are the largest terrestrial store of carbon, locking away twice as much heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere in their waterlogged soils as all the world's forests.
These carbon-rich reservoirs, composed of partially decayed organic matter, only cover three percent of Earth's surface, and generally fade out in the far north, where harsh weather limits plant growth.
But warmer temperatures caused by climate change have improved growing conditions for plants in the Arctic, and satellite data has shown a general "greening" of this frosty region.
Using drones, satellite imagery and on-the-ground observations, an international team of scientists assessed peatlands in the European and Canadian Arctic to see if they had benefited from warmer climes.
They found strong evidence that peatlands "have likely undergone lateral expansion over the last 40 years" in the Arctic, which is the fastest-warming region on Earth.
"The permafrost thaws a little, provides a water source for vegetation, and surface vegetation recovers. In this study, we specifically see a lateral expansion," Michelle Garneau, a professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal, and co-author of the study, told AFP.
The most marked change was observed where summer temperatures have risen the most, such as in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.
"All these new vegetated surfaces that didn't exist three decades ago are currently actively absorbing carbon," Garneau added.
How Arctic peatlands respond to climate change in future is "still highly uncertain", said the study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Communications Earth & Environment.
Recent modelling suggests these northern peatlands "may become a carbon source from mid-century" as they dry out and permafrost thaws, the study said.
They are also at risk from wildfires, which release masses of stored up carbon at once.
"This means that in the short term, these expanding peatlands are a growing carbon sink in the Arctic," said study co-author Karen Anderson, a professor from the University of Exeter, which led the research.
"But in the future, this could switch back, and this will happen because of higher temperatures and potentially things like fires," she told AFP.
As peatlands expand, they also release methane, a potent greenhouse gas with far more heat-trapping capacity than CO2, though these emissions decline over time.
"So while our study gives us some positive news, it does not detract from the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilise our climate," said Anderson.

Blindsided by brutal AI chess bots? This one thinks like a human
For years, the game of chess has been seen as a litmus test for how far AI can go against the human intellect. When IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer beat reigning Chess world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, it was deemed a pivotal moment. The Wall Street Journal called it 'one giant leap backward for mankind.' It hasn't been a total route for humanity, however. Just a month ago, Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen beat ChatGPT in a chess game without losing a single piece. Interestingly, the AI bots are fighting, too. Earlier this month, ChatGPT (backed by OpenAI's GPT-o3 reasoning model) beat Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk-led xAI, in a chess tournament. Recommended Videos But how does an average chess-loving person fare against AI bots at chess? Well, it's frustrating. One of the most recurring themes you will see on chess forums is that bots play 'differently from humans.' Of course, when you're playing against a chess computing bot like Stockfish 16 that can assess over ten million positions per second, not many players stand a chance. On the other hand, some seasoned players say beating chess bots is easier because they follow a pattern, and that one must know how to survive the initial assault to beat them. But at the end of the day, AI bots don't play by conventions. A researcher at Carnegie Mellon University has now come up with a less alien solution – an AI chess bot that plays like a human. Say hello to Allie The bot named Allie is the brainchild of Yiming Zhang, a PhD candidate at the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) in CMU's School of Computer Science. Interestingly, Zhang found himself eager to play chess after watching Netflix's popular series, 'The Queen's Gambit.' But soon after dipping into the world of online chess, he found himself frustrated by chess bots. After playing against them, he realized that these bots play unnaturally. Moreover, the underlying tactics behind a chess engine often make it nearly impossible to beat them, thanks to their training, which involves winning at all costs by doing increasingly complex calculations. That's where Allie differs from your average chess-acing bot. It has been trained on 91 million transcripts of chess games played between humans. As a result, the way it contemplates moves, makes attacking advances, and defends positions feels like an average human player. 'Allie is trained on log sequences of real chess games to model the behaviors of human chess players across the skill spectrum, including non-move behaviors such as pondering times and resignations,' says the research paper. During evaluations, researchers found that Allie actually 'ponders' at critical situations in the game. Go ahead and test your mettle The fact that Allie has been trained to think like a human doesn't mean it's a weak player. Far from it, actually. It can hold its fort against everyone from amateurs to grandmasters. 'Against grandmaster-level (2500 Elo) opponents, Allie with adaptive search exhibits the strength of a fellow grandmaster, all while learning exclusively from humans.' Since being deployed publicly, it has amassed more than 11,500 online chess games on the online platform Lichess, where you can also try your skills against it. So far, it has over 6,500 victories against human players, lost just over 4,000 games, and more than 500 battles have ended in a draw. 'For beginners, it's not interesting or instructive to play against chess bots because the moves they make are often bizarre and incomprehensible to humans,' Zhang explains. Interestingly, Allie is completely free and open-source, which means other researchers can build atop it. Do keep in mind it's only accepting invites for Blitz games. Extreme heat. Warmer water. More ticks. Fewer fish. Climate change report brings grim news.
Climate change continues to have a profound impact on the Great Lakes region, bringing more extreme weather, declining fish populations, and subtle but profound economic transformation. That's according to a new report by the Environmental Law and Policy Center, conducted by researchers around the Great Lakes. The report is an update to a 2019 report examining the effects of climate change on the lakes themselves and surrounding region. Despite the discouraging tendency these days to see everything through a political prism, the science itself is incontestable and apolitical: Climate change is caused by human activity, primarily the use of fossil fuels, like coal, oil and gas. Fossil fuels account for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, which trap heat and warm the planet. A warmer planet incites a ripple effect — and yes, even in the Great Lakes, a place that many consider a climate haven. Since 1951, annual average air temperatures have increased by nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit in the U.S Great Lakes region — a stunning change given the massive cooling effect the lakes have on the region. "Climate is one of the most important issues facing humanity," said Don Wuebbles, lead author on the assessment and emeritus professor at the University of Illinois. "We are driving changes and now we have to figure out together what do we do about it." Here are eight takeaways from the climate change report. More: Wisconsin's 2024 climate review: A year of unprecedented weather, and record highs and lows More dangerous heat waves The Great Lakes region warmed substantially faster in the six years since the last assessment than it did in decades prior, the report shows. And with this warming trend, dangerously hot days are happening more often, especially in urban heat islands where surfaces like parking lots, sidewalks and streets absorb and hold onto heat. In Milwaukee, for instance, a mapping campaign by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources showed that at night, there can be a 10-degree temperature difference between the hottest and coolest parts of the city. By the 2030s, urban areas like Chicago could face more than 200 hours of temperatures exceeding 95°F — up sharply from just 30 hours in recent years. This surge in extreme heat drives up energy demand and poses serious health risks to vulnerable populations. More: Many Milwaukeeans live in a heat island, and 'we can't air condition our way out of this' In Milwaukee, one of the country's most racially segregated cities, where historical redlining has pushed communities of color into more industrial areas, urban heat islands continue to reinforce longstanding inequities. The report also shows that the number of cool nights continues to decline, another alarming trend given extreme nighttime heat can actually be deadlier than daytime heat. More extreme rain events Since 1951, annual total precipitation has increased by 15% in the U.S. Great Lakes region. With that, the frequency of extreme precipitation events has also continued to increase, the report shows. Between 2017 and 2024, the number of days with at least 2 inches of precipitation was 6% higher than the 1986-2016 average and 37% higher than what scientists refer to as the baseline period of 1901-1960. Declining ice cover, rising lake levels The report confirms growing evidence that winters in the Great Lakes region are being hit hardest by climate change. Winter is the fastest warming season in the region, resulting in the steady decline in ice cover over the past five decades. The decline has also been met with extreme swings from near record highs to near record lows within a few years. Average ice cover across all five Great Lakes during the 2024 ice season was the lowest on record since scientists began recording it more than 50 years ago. More: New data shows winters in Great Lakes region shrinking by two or more weeks since 1995 One surprising finding, Wuebbles said, is that while climate change is leading to greater fluctuations in lake levels, they are generally rising overall. A 2022 modeling study projected that by mid-century, Great Lakes water levels could rise upwards of 17.3 inches in Lake Michigan and Huron, and 7.5 inches in Lake Superior. Warming water temperatures According to the report, summer lake surface temperatures have increased in recent decades. For instance, Lake Superior summer temperatures increased by nearly 5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1979 to 2023 − the most of any of the Great Lakes. In 2024, Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario all experienced record-high average surface temperatures in 2024. The report also highlights that the greatest rates of temperature increase continue to be in deeper waters, with smaller increases near shorelines. Winter's influence in deeper waters is also disappearing, with shifts in fall overturn and winter cooling that could impact the lake's ecosystem. Vanishing fish populations The report highlights that lake whitefish are on the verge of collapse, with stock assessment models showing that in Lake Michigan the prized species may disappear from some locations within five years. And even if commercial fishing for lake whitefish ceases, they could still face local or regional extinction. Warming winters and reduced ice cover is largely to blame, the report says, as ice cover protects whitefish eggs along the shoreline. However, another reason for the decline is invasive zebra and quagga mussels, which pick off larval whitefish before they reach adulthood. In Wisconsin, warming summer stream and river temperatures are expected to reduce habitat for brook and brown trout by 68% and 32%, respectively, by mid-century. Ticks are expanding their range Many kinds of ticks are expanding their range and growing more abundant in the Midwest, presenting an increased risk for disease in humans and wildlife. For instance, the report highlights warming temperatures have pushed black legged ticks, a primary carrier of Lyme disease, northward. The lone star tick, which is known for causing a life-threatening allergy to red meat, has also expanded its range. Old growth forests are still helping − for now The updated assessment also highlighted that old growth forests are still taking in a significant amount of carbon dioxide out of the air For instance, tree ring data from 9,000 trees in northern Wisconsin show older trees store more carbon than scientists previously thought. The fact that old-growth trees store more carbon underscores why cutting them down is a serious mistake, Wuebbles said. Delaying tree harvests and protecting older forests enhances carbon sequestration, making untouched forests vital for reducing carbon dioxide and combating climate change. Rising economic toll Communities around the region have strong ties to the Great Lakes, and economic impacts of climate change are expected to cross all sectors. The report notes that the Anishinaabeg, which include the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi, are poised to be disproportionately affected by climate change. Impacts to land, water, food and plant and animal species threaten practices as well as cultural sites. Reductions in lake ice cover are disrupting local economies around the Great Lakes by affecting fishing, winter sports, shipping schedules and biological processes crucial to aquatic ecosystems. Public health risks are rising due to more frequent heat waves, flooding and the spread of vector-borne diseases like those carried by mosquitoes and ticks. Industries and transportation systems face challenges from drought, extreme heat and infrastructure damage, while changing lake conditions impact shipping efficiency. Tourism and fishing are also affected, with shorter winters reducing seasonal activities and warming waters threatening cold-water fish species but benefiting warm-water ones. Creating 'ripples of change': Nova Scotia immigrant wins national leadership award
When Simone Le Gendre arrived in Nova Scotia from Trinidad and Tobago in 2018, it was her first time setting foot on Canadian soil. She had no idea that seven years later she would be honoured as one of Canada's top-25 immigrants and be the inaugural recipient of the Edward Jones Leadership Award. The awards, in their 17th year, are presented by Canadian Immigrant magazine to celebrate immigrant success across Canada. At the ceremony in Toronto this week, Le Gendre was recognized for her vision and commitment to inclusion. She was the only person from Atlantic Canada to receive an award this year. 'I feel really, really blessed' Le Gendre secured a senior role in education administration in Nova Scotia before leaving Trinidad, where she worked for the National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. "I thought that my skill set was unique and probably would be really hard for me to find a job in my field," she said. "But right before I moved to Canada ... I said, 'You know what, let me just throw my hat in the ring'... I feel really, really blessed." She has held various positions since arriving, including becoming Nova Scotia's first immigrant and Black woman to become the province's director of immigration and settlement. According to Le Gendre, she didn't see it as an opportunity to be the first but rather as a chance to bring her lived experience to the role. In hindsight, she said it was a "huge privilege" to be the first immigrant and Black woman in that role. She said she wanted to give other immigrants a glimpse of what it was like to be inside the system. Today, she is the director of policy and strategic initiatives at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, where she helps co-ordinate Nova Scotia's responses to a number of federal-provincial initiatives. Outside her role in government, Le Gendre founded EduHaus Inc., opening up access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics through initiatives like the AI-powered STEMpal and Roots & Harvest urban farm. "Government cannot do everything.... I decided that I was just not going to stand by and criticize," she said. "I was going to build whatever I felt needed to exist, to make more people included in STEM and in taking back control of their food systems." Driven by her faith The leadership award holds deep significance, she said. She said being the inaugural recipient is "deeply humbling." "To me, leadership means using every opportunity to create ripples of change that outlast you," she said. Le Gendre said she is driven by values instilled by her parents Cecil and Annette Le Gendre. She said her Roman Catholic faith has given her the strength to deal with whatever challenges life has thrown at her. Canada gave her the opportunity to deliver big dreams for government and herself, she said. Nawaz Meghji, the principal and general counsel for Edward Jones Canada, immigrated to Canada with his family from Tanzania in the 1970s. He said immigrants like Le Gendre make great efforts to improve the lives of others. "Canada needs far more people like that," he said. MORE TOP STORIES
