West Bengal: Two persons arrested for assaulting Muslim men transporting cattle in Durgapur
Two persons were arrested for allegedly beating up, tying and forcing two Muslim men to do sit-ups in West Bengal's Durgapur on Thursday, while they were transporting cattle for farming purposes, police said. The attackers were allegedly linked to a Hindutva outfit and the Bharatiya Janata Party, The Indian Express reported. The incident took place near the Gammon Bridge under the Coke Oven police station limits, where a group of men stopped a pickup van carrying cattle and attacked its occupants, The Hindu reported. A purported video of the incident has been widely shared on social media. Commissioner of Police (Asansol-Durgapur) Sunil Kumar Chaudhary told The Hindu that the men were transporting cattle from the Asuria market in Bankura district. An FIR has been filed against a BJP youth wing leader who was allegedly seen in the video tying the victims' hands and forcing them to do sit-ups, the newspaper reported. HC dismisses bail plea of main accused in removing national flag from a Gurugram mosque
The Punjab and Haryana high court has denied anticipatory bail to a Gurugram man who allegedly replaced the national flag atop a mosque with saffron flag observing that conduct of the petitioner had 'serious communal and constitutional implications'. He had argued that was falsely implicated in this case and had no role to play in the entire incident. (Getty Images/iStockphoto) 'The allegations against the petitioner are not vague or general in nature but are specific and substantiated by initial investigation, including purported conversations between the petitioner and the co-accused during the commission of the alleged act. The gravity of the offence and its potential impact on public order and communal peace cannot be overlooked at this stage,' the bench of justice Manisha Batra observed while dismissing the plea from one Vikas Tomar from Gurugram. He had approached high court seeking pre-arrest bail in an FIR registered on July 7 this year under Sections 299,3(5),61(2)AND 2 of Prevention of Insult to National Honours Act, 1971 and causing disappearance of evidence at Bilaspur police station in Gurugram. He had argued that was falsely implicated in this case and had no role to play in the entire incident. Allegations were that on July 7 police received information that the national flag being hoisted on a mosque was replaced with another flag in a Bilaspur locality by unsocial elements. The complainant gave three names to the police and also provided an audio and video recording. During the probe petitioner's role had surfaced, the police had told the court. State's counsel had told the court that there are serious and specific allegations against the petitioner who with an intent to create communal tension in the vicinity, had got the national flag hoisted in the mosque of village Uton removed and instead unfurled a saffron flag in place of the same with an intent to cause hurt to religious feelings of the members of Muslim community. For conducting a deeper probe, custodial interrogation of the petitioner is must. Hence, pre-arrest bail be not allowed, the state's counsel had told the court. The court observed that no extraordinary or exceptional circumstance has been brought on record by the petitioner that would warrant court's interference in his favour. '…in light of the serious communal and constitutional implications of the alleged conduct. …custodial interrogation of a suspected person is qualitatively more elicitation oriented than questioning a suspect …(on anticipatory bail). Many useful information can be disinterred during custodial interrogation,' the bench said dismissing the plea and adding that a deeper and proper probe is required and the custodial interrogation of the petitioner is 'must'.

‘No one has authority to moral police others'—Hyderabad Police arrests man ‘harassing' interfaith duo
On 29 July, Raheel took umbrage that C. Neeraj, a 24-year-old IT employee, was accompanied by his Muslim colleague, who was wearing a hijab. He allegedly started filming them on his mobile phone, violating their privacy, and later, he circulated the video on social media. He also started abusing and threatening the duo with dire consequences, and then physically assaulted them, the police said. Neeraj and the woman were forced to flee the spot, but Raheel allegedly followed close behind and further intimidated the duo by continuing to record them on his phone until they reached the nearby Himayatnagar area. The police have identified the accused as Mohammed Raheel, a 24-year-old driver working with Rapido. Hyderabad: A Muslim man from the Charminar area has been arrested for allegedly 'moral policing' and assaulting a Hindu man and a Muslim woman spending time on NTR Marg near the Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad, Hyderabad Police said Saturday. Neeraj lodged a police complaint on 30 July, after which the police arrested Raheel from the Old City. K. Shilpavalli, deputy commissioner of police (central zone), Hyderabad Police, said that investigations showed that Raheel deliberately shared the video to provoke communal sentiments, invade personal privacy, and promote divisive narratives. 'The individual who recorded and transmitted the video has been arrested. Relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act have been invoked; further investigation is ongoing, including identifying those managing and promoting such social media accounts,' said the DCP in a statement. Raheel allegedly disseminated the video on social media, including Instagram and X, and it rapidly gained widespread attention on the platforms. 'This exposure has heightened the risk of potential attacks on the victims, posing a threat to them and their family members from communally motivated individuals,' stated the DCP after Raheel's arrest. Raheel has been booked under sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups), 74 (assault or criminal force against a woman), 79 (insult of a woman's modesty), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 115(1) (voluntarily causing harm), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 131 (assault or criminal force), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS, and Section 67 of the IT Act (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form). The DCP, in her statement, warned the general public against indulging in such acts or disturbing social harmony in Hyderabad. 'Let it be made absolutely clear: no person or group has the authority to moral police others, harass individuals based on their personal choices, or portray such actions as justified under any communal or ideological pretext. Such acts are criminal in nature and will be dealt with strictly, irrespective of the identity or affiliation of the offender,' she added. The police also warned people from forwarding, or reacting to such videos or communal content, 'even in outrage or criticism'. Anyone found indulging in such acts will be liable for aiding the spread of illegal or inflammatory material, the police added. 'Issues concerning interfaith relationships, societal norms, or community sensitivities require thoughtful handling—not sensationalism,' added the DCP in her statement.
