Star Wars film age rating changed after new report points out concerning detail

Daily Mirror6 days ago
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace has been reclassified to a PG rating after being reassessed by the BBFC.
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace has been reclassified from universal (U) to parental guidance (PG) by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) because of 'moderate violence' in a lightsaber fight.

The reclassification was revealed in the BBFC's 2024 annual report, which said the 1999 film's starship dogfights, use of laser weapons, and the battle, which shows brief 'bloody detail' and a 'non-graphic' shot of a villain's dissected body, had led to it being labelled PG for its cinema re-release last year.

PG means the film should not unsettle a child aged eight or above, but some scenes may be unsuitable for more sensitive children, while U means a movie is suitable to all.

Another film which saw its classification change was 1937's A Star Is Born, which went from U to 12, meaning it is not generally suitable for children aged under 12, because of the implied suicide of one of the film's characters, which was described as 'visually discreet'.
The phrase 'son of a bitch' and drug references saw US TV comedy series Frasier go from a PG to a 12, over a change in the guidelines for classification, while both The Crow (1995) and Fight Club (1999) saw their classifications lowered from 18 to 15 because of the updated guidelines.

It comes as last year saw the BBFC classify the highest number of films in its 112-year history, with new guidelines regarding the classification of sex scenes at the 12/15 border, violence across the categories, and certain depictions of drug misuse.
Natasha Kaplinsky, president of the BBFC, said: '2024 was the BBFC's 112th year of helping people across the UK view what's right for them – and what a remarkable year it was.
'We classified more cinema features than ever before, and we have made significant progress towards extending the coverage of trusted BBFC age ratings on streaming services through new deals with Prime Video and Netflix.
'We launched our revised Classification Guidelines – ensuring that the standards we apply when classifying content continue to reflect the views of UK audiences.
'Perhaps most exciting of all, we have continued our pioneering work with AI, ensuring that the BBFC remains at the forefront of film and digital content regulation. It has been a genuine privilege to lead the organisation at such an exciting and transformative time.'

‘Horrendous' Prime Video movie starring famous rapper dubbed 'new level of bad'

A new sci-fi thriller starring an A-list rapper has been slammed by fans after its release on Prime Video this week Prime Video subscribers are claiming a new science fiction thriller based on one of the most iconic novels of all time could be one of the worst movies ever made. ‌ The streaming platform has seen plenty of success with its new and returning titles this year, from action-packed films G20 and Heads of State to hit series We Were Liars and the return of The Summer I Turned Pretty. ‌ Unfortunately, their latest release has completely slipped under most viewers' radars this week. ‌ Its lack of attention seems to be for good reason though, as War of the Worlds, starring Ice Cube in the lead role, has been universally panned by critics and viewers. The reimagining of HG Wells' influential alien invasion novel received a tragic 0 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, not faring much better with audiences, who awarded it a mere 11 percent. This version of the classic sci-fi thriller features the famous rapper as a cyber-security analyst for Homeland Security and takes inspiration from recent 'screenlife' films, which take place entirely on computer and smartphone screens. However, this fresh take on a fan-favourite novel has caught significant backlash from those who had the misfortune of tuning in this weekend. One Reddit user claims the film is 'on another level of bad'. ‌ To which someone replied: 'I honestly think this may be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. 'Sure there are plenty of movies that fail in every possible way and end up a nonsensical mess. 'But even those have a certain charm and a certain level of effort behind them. This movie is the absolute laziest movie I've ever seen, and it's so blatant about it.' ‌ Another user gave a damning verdict: 'A friend of mine, who likes just about everything, even new Marvel c***, hated this movie. It must be REALLY bad if that man was struggling to find anything positive to say about it at all.' ‌ Over on another thread, one viewer said War of the Worlds could be the 'worst movie of all time'. 'How they let this movie come out is beyond me,' they lamented. 'Have to assume Eva Longoria and Ice Cube must have got PAIDDDD to be in this AI junk. Didn't think we could see worse than the weekend's movie but here it is!' ‌ 'One of the most atrocious movies I've ever seen,' someone else remarked. While a Letterboxd reviewer gave it a scathing half a star, declaring: 'Not a fan of being hyperbolic but arguably one of the worse movies to be released/distributed by a major platform in the last 5 years.' Is War of the Worlds so bad it's good or simply terrible on every level? And is anyone brave enough to watch the whole thing to find out? War of the Worlds is available to stream on Prime Video.

Wednesday to Hunting the Yorkshire Ripper: the seven best shows to stream this week

It's a new term at Nevermore, and for the first time in her life, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is dying to go back to school. After all, she's a minor celebrity now and dealing with autograph hunters ('I only ever sign my name in blood. I never said it was my own blood'). However, things are about to get much worse for Wednesday. Like every kid, she dreads the arrival of her family at school, but not only are her parents around more – her troublesome brother Pugsley and formidable grandmother Hester also soon become fixtures. Once again, it's stylish, smart and witty. However you feel about Tim Burton, it's hard to argue that his maximalist gothic style isn't absolutely perfect for this material. Netflix, from Wednesday 6 August The crimes of Peter Sutcliffe (and the flawed police investigation) have proved irresistible to documentary-makers, with the BBC and Netflix recently offering up versions of events. In truth, this latest series doesn't add much to our understanding of Sutcliffe's crimes, though it does broaden to examine the infamous 'Wearside Jack' tape that was sent to police by a man claiming to be the killer. Former DCS Chris Gregg – who assembled a team to catch the hoaxer – is interviewed about his career-long involvement with the case. Prime Video, from Sunday 3 August As represented in TV dramas, cold cases are often glamorous and mysterious. This documentary series shows the reality is sadder, if frequently no less intriguing. It focuses on the work of the DNA Doe Project, a US organisation that, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, uses detective work and genetic investigation to offer the relatives of some of the estimated 50,000 unidentified bodies lying in American morgues a measure of closure. It's a necessarily melancholy affair but also somewhat stirring in its depiction of tireless, valuable service. Disney+, from Wednesday 6 August A third series for this accomplished animation that follows the exploits of the Prouds, an upwardly mobile African American family who mix cartoonish hijinks with strong, slightly earnest moral messaging about identity and hot-button social justice issues. Trudy is worried about screentime and it isn't just her kids who can't put down their phones – her husband Oscar is hardly setting a good example. Cue a decision to live more consciously and to take a family holiday to London, Paris and Nairobi that becomes life-changing for everyone involved. Apple TV+, from Wednesday 6 August Sign up to What's On Get the best TV reviews, news and features in your inbox every Monday after newsletter promotion The chemistry between Seth Rogen's Will and Rose Byrne's Sylvia continues to underwrite this profound comedy. The series doesn't just tell us that deep, platonic friendships between men and women are possible – it shows us. It's hard to avoid the feeling that Will and Sylvia have more fun together than with anyone else. And that's the whole point: shouldn't that be enough? As we return, Will is preparing to marry Jenna but admits to Sylvia that he has a crush on someone else. The fear that it might turn out to be Sylvia herself soon passes but, even so, is this another symptom of Will's inability to commit to adult life? Apple TV+, from Wednesday 6 August Most people would probably agree that the absence of a gameshow for cats and their owners is a glaring omission from the TV schedules. So thank goodness, finally, for House of Cats, a three-parter of snappy episodes which is hosted by comic Ivo Graham and social media personality, and qualified veterinary surgeon, Cat the Vet. Fittingly, there's no hint of a cash prize here; instead the winning partnership will take home a golden litter tray. Given that cats are notoriously much harder to organise than dogs, they will have certainly earned it. Channel 4, from Thursday 7 August From Walter Presents, this daft but moderately creepy mystery drama from France stars Fantine Harduin as the titular teenager. When Promethea is hit by a car, she eventually wakes from a coma with no recollection of anything but her unusual name. Gradually, her memory starts to return but that proves to be a mixed blessing as a series of disturbing revelations about an unsolved recent murder start to spill out. At first, it seems that Promethea might have witnessed this killing – but could her involvement have been even more hands-on? Channel 4, from Friday 8 August
