For the dad who has everything (including a half-full bottle of bourbon he "forgets" to finish), maybe it's time to introduce something new. And not just new-to-him, but new-to-his-bar-cart.
This Father's Day, skip the expected and look globally: there's a whole world of interesting, complex, and straight-up fascinating spirits waiting to be explored. Some are cultural staples abroad, others are locally revered oddities, but all of them are worth a pour.
Whether he's the kind of guy who wants to know the entire backstory behind every bottle, or just wants something cool to sample, these picks deliver. Here are eight global spirits that bring character, craft, and a little surprise to your Father's Day lineup.

Infused with a blade of bison grass that grows in the Białowieża Forest, Żubrówka isn't just a vodka with a gimmick. It's an herbaceous, subtly sweet spirit that delivers a whisper of spring meadow. It shines in a chilled shot or the Polish classic 'Żubrówka and apple juice" (known locally as a "tatanka"), but it's also one of Poland's most successful alcohol exports: Żubrówka is consistently ranked among the top-five bestselling vodkas in the world. It got there even in the face of a banned in the U.S. by the FDA, because of the possible blood-thinning effects of the grass that was lifted in 2010.
A flagship of China's baijiu category, Moutai is a divisive icon: intensely aromatic, famously funky, and loaded with umami. Distilled from sorghum and aged in clay, it's been a favorite of many prominent historical diplomats. Distributed stateside by Kweichow Moutai Co. via specialty importers, it ranked as the most valuable liquor brand globally in 2025, surpassing $250 billion in market cap. Gift this to your dad if he isn't afraid of a challenge.
Nardini is one of Italy's largest and most well-known grappa producers, with a history dating back to the 18th century.

Made from grape pomace, grappa is Italy's answer to 'nose to tail' winemaking. Fragrant, fiery, and full of rustic charm, Italy produces roughly 40 million bottles of grappa each year, with many grapperias in operation for centuries. Nardini is widely considered the oldest, with a history dating back to 1779; given their status, they're a great place to start with picking your gift. Grappa comes in a number of different expressions, starting with clear, unaged 'bianca' (white) and moving through a variety of ages and cask-finishes.
A plum brandy with punch, Slivovitz is a mainstay in much of Eastern Europe, especially Serbia and Croatia. It ranges from fire-breathing moonshine to elegant, aged eaux-de-vie, and usually packs a fragrant, fruity punch. Look for bottled-in-country versions for the best quality, with popular brands like Maraska (Croatia) and Navip (Serbia) available in U.S. specialty shops (many with the distinctive circular bottle that Slivovitz fans know and love).
Pisco is the national spirit of both Peru and Chile; while the drink is traditionally clear, experiments with cask-aging has lead to expanded colors for pisco expressions.

South America's grape-based spirit has long had loyal fans on both sides of the Andes, with Peru and Chile each claiming it as their own—the Denomination of Origin (DO) is accepted from both countries, though an ongoing legal battle could change that. Floral, silky, and typically unaged, pisco brings a bright, fragrant profile that works well neat or in a cocktail (Pisco Sour, anyone?). Recently, distillers have also tried aging their pisco to add different profiles, which resulted in a variety of colors, but the traditional pisco is clear.
Often referred to as "lion's milk" when mixed with water (thanks to its opalescent coloration), Raki is an answer to Greek ouzo or French pastis: an anise-flavored spirit with big, bold aromatics, with production dominated by Diageo. Other countries in the Ottoman sphere also claim Raki, but Turkey considers it their national drink—with an intense flavor and even more powerful nose, Raki is best served with mezze and plenty of stories.

Not quite tequila, not quite mezcal, sotol is made from a wild desert plant (not agave!) and delivers a grassy, mineral-forward character all its own. Often earthier and more savory than its cousins, sotol is still relatively under the radar in the U.S., which is exactly what makes it cool. Given tequila's ascendant position in the market, it makes sense that distillers would try to glom onto the trend and bring another spirit to the market—especially one that doesn't compete for agave, which has had large price fluctuations in the past and is in demand.
Made from fermented cashew apple (or coconut, depending on the region), feni is hyperlocal to Goa and shockingly expressive. The nose alone is a journey: fruity, funky, and a little wild. It's not for everyone—but if you're shopping for a dad who wants something nobody else has heard of, this is it. Goa feni has geographical indication (GI) status in India, making it a protected regional specialty. Much of the production is still artisanal and non-commercial, though brands have been bringing feni to the U.S. market since 2015.
Whether you wrap it, pour it, or set it out next to a globe and a cigar, these spirits are more than just thoughtful gifts. They're drinkable passports to somewhere else—which, depending on your dad's travel plans this year, might be exactly what he needs.

David Rendall, Tenor Who Suffered 2 Operatic Mishaps, Dies at 76
David Rendall, a British tenor who gained starring roles in Mozart, Verdi and Donizetti on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to a light, clear voice, but who found life uncomfortably imitating art in a pair of career-altering stage mishaps, died on July 21 at his home in New Forest, England. He was 76. His death was announced on Facebook and Instagram by Glyndebourne, the British opera company Mr. Rendall joined in 1974. His son Huw Montague Rendall, an acclaimed baritone, said in an interview that he had died after a 'long complicated illness.' Mr. Rendall was a regular at the Metropolitan Opera throughout the 1980s, singing in 134 performances as Ernesto in 'Don Pasquale,' Tamino in 'The Magic Flute,' Alfredo in 'La Traviata,' Don Ottavio in 'Don Giovanni' and in other works, and earning mixed reviews. He performed some of the same roles at the Royal Opera House in London in that decade, though British critics were generally more enthusiastic. He also sang at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera and Opéra Bastille in Paris, among other venues. But it was in two stage accidents, the second of which, in 2005, curtailed his singing career, that Mr. Rendall gained notoriety and unwittingly illustrated the perils of operatic life. In April 2005, Mr. Rendall was singing Radamès in Verdi's 'Aida' at the Royal Danish Theater in Copenhagen when part of the stage collapsed, destroying the set. He was 'knocked down at least 15 feet and tried to crawl to safety to avoid being crushed,' he later told The Telegraph of London. Is Bob Dylan's ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues' Video the Most Copied of All Time?
Rolling Stone named Beyoncé's 'Formation' the greatest music video of all time in 2021. But when it comes to the most influential, first place can arguably go to a clip that isn't even a proper music video — and was shot in black & white 60 years ago. Last week, Margo Price released a jaunty new single, 'Don't Wake Me Up,' accompanied by a video in which she holds up white cards with snippets of lyrics — among them, 'cow pasture cemetery,' 'honky tonk leaky tent,' 'dive bar,' 'madness' — as the song plays. It didn't take a classic-rock historian to see the video as a nod to Bob Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues,' the canonical footage of the young Bob of 1965 in a London alleyway holding, and discarding, cards with bits of the tune's lyrics; in the background is poet Allen Ginsberg talking to off-screen Dylan pal Bobby Neuwirth. Pennebaker's penetrating 1967 film Dont Look Back, shot during Dylan's U.K. tour of two years before. As Pennebaker later said, the concept came from Dylan himself: 'He said, 'I've got this idea for a film where I take a whole lot of sheets of paper and write lyrics for a song, and hold them up as the lyrics come up in the song and then I just toss them away.' And I said, 'That's a fantastic idea.' So we brought along about 50 shirt cardboards.' The footage was shot in the alley behind the Savoy Hotel in London, and according to Pennebaker (who died in 2019), some of the handwritten lyrics were supplied by Joan Baez and Donovan, who were both in Dylan's vicinity (and crosshairs) at the time. Once the MTV era began, the sequence, relatively primitive as it was, was seen as a music video prototype and began to inspire knockoffs and tributes. 'When Margo approached me with the concept, I did a deep dive on groups who'd done similar projects with poster cards or cue cards and was shocked to see how many there were,' says Hannah Gray Hall, who directed Price's 'Don't Wake Me Up.' 'It's like keeping a tradition going.' The first may have been 'Misfit,' the 1986 video by the stylish British pop band Curiosity Killed the Cat, which featured Andy Warhol dropping white cards during a brief cameo. The following year, INXS' 'Mediate' elevated the Dylan homage to another level. Starting with singer Michael Hutchence, all the band members held up and subsequently dropped lyric cards in sequence. 'You had to get the timing right,' INXS' Andrew Farriss tells Rolling Stone of filming outside of Sydney in the band's home country of Australia. 'You had to make sure the cards landed.' In another salute to the Dylan video, some of the words on the cards were intentionally misspelled. In a sign that not everything was instantly available on YouTube in 1987 (of course, YouTube was yet to exist), Farriss says he wasn't aware of the source material at the time. 'I'm not sure if it was the director's idea or Michael's, but I have to admit that I didn't even know Bob had a video like that,' he says. 'Maybe some of the other guys did. All I know is that it sounded like a good idea. I saw [the original] later and went, 'Oh, wow.'' The recreation was so obvious that one critic at the time noted that 'both the filmmaker [Pennebaker] and his subject [Dylan] ought to round up the lawyers,' but that didn't prevent the song from winning Video of the Year at the 1988 MTV Music Video Awards, in conjunction with the band's companion clip for 'Need You Tonight.' Since then, a cottage industry of 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' videos has risen up, each honoring the original in different ways. As with Curiosity Killed the Cat, some approached their remakes as parodies. 'Weird Al' Yankovic's 'Bob,' in 2003, found everyone's favorite satirical hero with a Dylan wig, vest, and alleyway of his own, a pretend Ginsberg behind him, as Yankovic tweaked Dylan's surrealistic imagery ('Rise to vote, sir/Do geese see God/Do nine men interpret/Nine men, I nod'). Even though 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' isn't one of Dylan's topical songs, others have used the setup for protest shots of their own. Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade's 'Buzzards of Green Hill' has typically carnivalesque Claypool lyrics, which could be about the perils of drunken driving, hence Claypool's use of cue cards in the song's video. Earlier this year, Kim Gordon redid the packing-list lyrics of 'Bye Bye' into a minimalist anti-Trump protest song, 'Bye Bye 25!,' complete with a video with Gordon holding cards with the new lyrics ('immigrant,' 'hate,' 'injustice'). Artist Ed Ruscha has a Sonic Youth connection of his own (the band named its song 'Brave Men Run' after one of his paintings) and a Dylan one too: In 2012, his offered up a lyric-card homage, honoring friend and conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner with snippets of Weiner's own words. Wir sind Helden's 2005 video 'Nur ein Wort' ('Just One Word') featured the now-defunct German pop band in their own alley, dancing and cavorting as they flashed their lyric sheets. (Since the song is about encouraging a private person to express themselves — 'your silence is your tent' — the use of words in the video made conceptual sense.) And before he was slaying zombies, Andrew Lincoln was wooing Keira Knightley in Love Actually with, yep, words on white cards. In the case of Price's video, director Hall says Price's team approached her about doing something similar to Dylan, 'but they said to make it my own and do a contemporary take on it.' Using 77 different poster-board cards for her shoot, Hall thinks those lyric snippets also connect to the song's theme and to Dylan's own legacy: 'Margo and I didn't talk about it in depth, but to me, it speaks very heavily to our current social climate and people being isolated in their own ways and not looking into other people's opinions. It's more social commentary than protest song.' For Farriss, one thing unites nearly 40 years of 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' homages. 'It's simple,' he says. 'Just because something's complicated doesn't mean it's necessarily good.'
