Dutch cyclist Ellen van Dijk says she will retire at the end of the season
The 38-year-old from the Netherlands has won 70 races in all categories during a stellar career. This includes three individual and three team world time trial titles, one world title in the scratch discipline, five European titles and a solo win over 139 kilometers (86 miles) in the Tour of Flanders.
'I'm going to retire as a professional cyclist at the end of the season after 20 years. It's been a big part of my life, a superlong career that I feel very thankful for,' the Lidl-Trek rider said in comments from her team. 'In the last two years I had a lot of nasty crashes and this for sure makes me more scared on the bike in the peloton, and it makes me lose the real love of the road racing.'
With 41 victories in races against the clock, Van Dijk is among the greats in time trials. She is also the former women's world record holder for the hour, riding a fraction over 49 kilometres (about 30 miles) in 2022 — a record since beaten.
Van Dijk thanked Lidl-Trek for their commitment to women's cycling.
'It means a lot to me what this team did for women's cycling,' she said. 'Trek always believed in women's cycling and invested a lot in it and has played a big role in making women's cycling what it is today.'

Lyon completes the signing of Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Šulc from Viktoria Plzeň
LYON, France (AP) — Czech Republic international Pavel Šulc has completed a move to French club Lyon from Viktoria Plzeň. Both clubs confirmed the transfer for a fee of 10 million euros ($11.6 million) on Monday. The offensive midfielder scored 15 goals and had nine assists last season for Viktoria in the Czech league, having netted 18 goals and added six assists the previous campaign. In July, he won the Czech Republic's Golden Ball award for the first time for being the best player of the 2024-25 season. Novak Djokovic withdraws from the Cincinnati Open and will head to the US Open without preparation
CINCINNATI -- CINCINNATI (AP) — Novak Djokovic pulled out of the Cincinnati Open on Monday for what officially was listed as a 'non-medical' reason, meaning he will head to the U.S. Open without having played a match in about 1 1/2 months. The 24-time Grand Slam champion hasn't competed since losing in the Wimbledon semifinals to eventual champion Jannik Sinner on July 11. That straight-set defeat against Sinner at the All England Club came two days after the 38-year-old Djokovic took what he described as a 'nasty' and 'awkward' fall in the last game of his quarterfinal victory. Djokovic clearly was compromised against Sinner and unable to move at his best; he received treatment on his upper left leg from a trainer. Djokovic's withdrawal from Cincinnati follows his decision to sit out the Toronto Masters that concludes this week. He cited a groin injury for that absence. His previous event before Wimbledon was the French Open, where he also lost to Sinner in the semifinals. Djokovic will have no hard-court tournament preparation before the U.S. Open singles competition begins on Aug. 24. He has won four championships at Flushing Meadows, most recently in 2023. That was also his most recent Grand Slam trophy.
