Ernie Clement homers and Blue Jays beat Cardinals 5-2 for 3-game sweep

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ernie Clement homered and Spencer Turnbull worked two scoreless innings to win his Toronto debut as the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
Clement finished with three hits but did not take the field in the ninth at third base after suffering an apparent leg injury. He dove for a grounder in the eighth and needed some attention but finished the inning.

Clement's fourth homer gave Toronto a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Toronto won for the seventh time in eight games and is 22-10 over its last 32.
Turnbull (1-0) worked the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two. He signed with Toronto last month and began the season in the minors. Turnbull played five seasons with Detroit and was with Philadelphia last year. Yariel Rodríguez pitched the ninth for his first major league save.
The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.
Matthew Liberatore (3-6) and gave up five runs, three earned, and eight hits in five innings.
Yohel Pozo's second homer gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the second.

Cardinals infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan didn't play after leaving Tuesday's game with a sore big left toe. The club is awaiting MRI results. He leads the team with a .310 average and 77 hits.

Yankees reliever likely done for season with flexor strain
TAMPA, Fla. — Who knows what kind of career Yankees reliever Jonathan Loaisiga would have had if he wasn't one of the most injury-prone pitchers of his era? His fastball and stuff always have been elite during his eight big-league seasons, all of them as a Yankee since 2018, and it sure played in 2021. That's the season that the Nicaraguan right-hander was one of the majors' best setup relievers pitching to a 2.17 ERA over 57 outings, but even then he served two stints on the injured list. No. 9 since 2019 was launched in early August when Loaisiga was shut down with middle back tightness while he was in the midst of a bad slump. Loaisiga predicted that he'd be back within three weeks, and he was tracking for that just last Sunday when he pitched a scoreless outing in a Triple-A rehab outing. But a day later he reported some elbow soreness. Loaisiga was off for an MRI on Tuesday and the test results didn't come back good. 'It looks like he probably has a flexor strain,' manager Aaron Boone said before Wednesday night's Yankees-Rays' game. 'We're getting more opinions on that, so we'll see what else we have.' Boone admitted that Loaisiga very well could be done for the season. It could end his roller-coaster Yankees career, too, because the $5 million club option for 2026 in the one-year, $5 million free agent contract that he signed last winter surely will not be vested. Loaisiga was on the IL this season from Opening Day until May because he was rehabbing from his April 2024 UCL surgery. In 30 games, he was 0-1 with a 4.25 ERA with 25 strikeouts and 10 walks. He pitched to a 2.76 ERA in his first 15 outings through June 20, then slumped to a 6.08 ERA in his last 15 appearances. Fairfield headed to US title game with gutsy Little League World Series win over Las Vegas
Connecticut's Fairfield National is one step closer to a Little League World Series title. The team advanced to the U.S. title game with a 7-3 win over the Summerlin South Little League team from Las Vegas on Wednesday, riding strong defense, clutch hitting and a gutsy pitching performance. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy misses game against Royals due to personal matter
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy will miss Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals while tending to a personal matter. Bench coach Luis Urueta will manage the club in Bochy's absence. The Rangers have been one of baseball's biggest disappointments this season. They were expected to bounce back after going from winning the franchise's first World Series championship two years ago in Bochy's return to managing to finishing 78-84 last year. But they were third in the AL West at 62-65 entering Wednesday's game. Though they lead the majors with a 3.46 ERA, their offense ranks among baseball's worst. The 70-year-old Bochy is sixth on baseball's all-time wins list with 2,233 and has four World Series championships over 28 seasons with San Diego, San Francisco and Texas.
