Cole Palmer reveals he HASN'T spoken to Chelsea team-mate Mykhailo Mudryk after taking his No 20 shirt with Ukrainian forward facing four-year drugs ban

Daily Mail5 hours ago

Cole Palmer did not consult Mykhailo Mudryk before taking his No 10 shirt, though Chelsea 's playmaker does intend on speaking privately with the suspended Ukrainian when he senses the time is right.
Having previously worn No 20, Palmer took on his new number ahead of the Club World Cup, with the news breaking on Wednesday how Mudryk now faces up to a four-year ban after being charged by the Football Association for failing a drugs test.
Speaking in Philadelphia to the English press pack, Palmer said: 'I wore No 10 all my life growing up and I just like the number. (Lionel) Messi, the big one, (Wayne) Rooney and players like that – it's an iconic number.
'I have not spoken to Misha yet but I will when the time is right. It is not really my place to get involved with him at the minute. I will speak to him.'
Palmer was wearing a face mask when he arrived in the United States, with some speculating as to whether he was ill or playing a practical joke for the cameras.
Actually, it was neither, as he explained: 'It wasn't a joke. I just don't like the smelly planes. That's why I wear a mask. When I travel I don't like the smells so that's why I wear them. Nothing else. Enzo (Maresca) doesn't know, I didn't tell him, but he didn't ask me to be fair.'
On possible fatigue after a long season, Palmer said: 'I will need a break because we've been playing for a year straight. But at the start of last season, everyone wanted to play the Champions League, so now we have it, no one's going to be tired.'
Maresca has also reminded Palmer that he has a licence to thrill, with the England international saying: 'Obviously you can't take the p*** and do whatever you want, but I feel like he still gives you a little bit of room to try and see what I can do.'
In Philadelphia, it is Palmer's face on the Club World Cup adverts plastered around the city. He is prone to being mobbed when in public, particularly in London, and said on his rapid rise to fame: 'At the start, it was a bit 'wow", but now I get used to it.
'I am just a normal kid so when people do stuff like that I think, 'Why me?' Obviously, it (the pressure) can sometimes get to everyone. But most of the time, I try and ignore it. I still do the same things now that I did before I came to Chelsea. I try to think it's just a game of football at the end of the day, it's not life or death.
'I just try and enjoy it. I like to go and play five-side and go to the Astro [turf] and do normal things.'
Chelsea face Flamengo next at the Club World Cup and Palmer added: 'My uncle lives in Brazil and messaged me to say they are one of the biggest clubs in Brazil and that's all they are talking about, so I expect it will be a good game. He has lived in Brazil for over 10 years and he messaged me to say please score.'
Estevao Willian is incoming at Chelsea and the 18-year-old Brazilian wonderkid from Palmeiras will compete with Palmer for minutes. 'He's a really good player, and I've spoken to him a few times,' Palmer said. 'He doesn't speak much English, so I think it was a case of Google Translate, but I've had a few conversations with him saying I'm looking forward to seeing him and playing with him.'

Indiana Fever's Stephanie White to take leave as Mike Kelly to serve as coach

Indiana coach Stephanie White will miss her second game this season for personal reasons when the Fever visit the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday night in San Francisco. The Fever (6-5) said White is tending to a personal matter, with assistant coach Austin Kelly serving as acting head coach for Indiana's first game against the expansion Golden State franchise (5-6). Kelly also served as head coach on 7 June, when the Fever beat the host Chicago Sky 79-52. White, 47, was attending to a family matter. 'It's going to be the same,' Kelly said after Thursday's shootaround, according to an ESPN report. 'I think we are an extension of each other. 'The message is still the same that we talk about in the locker room: playing for each other, getting it done on the defensive end and then having that help fuel us on the offensive end. But the vibes are good.' It is the first season of White's second stint as Indiana's head coach. She led the Fever from 2015-16 and returned after spending the past two seasons coaching the Connecticut Sun.

Arsenal mull a move for ANOTHER Premier League rival's star - but could face competition from Chelsea and Tottenham

Arsenal are believed to have discussed Mohammed Kudus at West Ham as a potential transfer target, as have Chelsea and Tottenham. The Gunners are keen to bolster their attacking ranks during the summer transfer window, with a number of strikers and forwards linked with the north London side. Alexander Isak, who features for the club's Premier League rivals Newcastle, was thought to be one of Arsenal's long-range targets, but appears set to stay on Tyneside. The club has also been linked to Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokores, with the Swedish goalscoring behemoth believed to be interested in a move to the Premier League, but frustrated by his current side's unwillingness to let him depart for anything less than his £84million release clause. Other names linked to the club include RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins. But Mikel Arteta 's side could yet look closer to home for additional firepower, with the forward the focus of interest from a range of Premier League rivals. The Ghana international was a bright spot amid a difficult season at the London Stadium, registering five goals and a further four assists across his 35 appearances in all competitions. But the star comes with a hefty release clause should any side look to secure his services. Amid links to Saudi Arabian sides at the start of the summer, it was revealed that clubs might have to fork out £85m. Arsenal are also thought to be interested in Chelsea star Noni Madueke, with Mail Sport reporting that the winger could be likely to fall down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge as the club continues to recruit heavily. Former Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap kicked off the Blues' summer spending with his £30m deal ahead of the Club World Cup, with Enzo Maresco also drafting in Mamadou Sarr from sister club Strasbourg, and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon.

Jordan Spieth groans in agony and forced to pull out of Travelers Championship with injury

JORDAN SPIETH let out an ear-piercing groan as his Travelers Championship hopes ended with agonising injury at the 13th hole. The three-time Major winner withdrew from the £15million tournament amid what he called "weird circumstances" on day one. 3 3 The ex-World No.1 revealed his back had earlier locked up. The 31-year-old did all he could to battle on, having never pulled out of a tournament before. But after struggling to five-over after 12 holes, he accompanied his 13th tee shot with a cry of pain that meant enough was enough. So the Ryder Cup star had to exit early from the final Signature Event of the season at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Spieth hitched a ride on a buggy to depart the scene. Earlier in the round he was spotted using a muscle massager on his upper back. But he explained his body had started to lock up even before that - during a warm-up on the ranges. Spieth was still keen to give the tournament a go as it's a no-cut event with extra FedExCup points at stake. 3 And he said after his unfortunate early ending: "Everything was great in my gym session, and I've been very, very excited to go out and play. "Things have been getting better and better, and then my right scap [scapula on the upper back] just kind of locked — like tightened midway through the warm-up." Watch Bob MacIntyre's classy reaction after JJ Spaun holes winning putt at US Open Spieth said the problem moved up "all of a sudden" - then was all across his back. He ended his practice 30 minute early for treatment from a physio before starting the opening round. Spieth explained his loud near-grunt of anguish by saying his 13th tee shot "legitimately really hurt". It meant he was "not going to be able to make a backswing that's even useful, and that's what happened on the [earlier] bunker shot." The Texan has just returned from wrist surgery but insisted his new injury was a surprise. Spieth began the event at 37th in the season's rankings - knowing that the top 70 in early August go into the FedExCup Playoffs and the top 50 make next year's Signature Events. He said his new setback was "incredibly frustrating" as he went into the Travelers Championship "very confident". Spieth added:" Everything I had done in practice and the pro-am showed me it's going to be a really good event. "It's just a very weird circumstance. It's disappointing ... we're having a baby here in a couple weeks, so I'll have some time off now, obviously, to get healthy. "But hopefully, after a few days, I go through the right process to just get right back to where I was."
