Mani Ratnam on Tamil cinema not having Rs 1000 crore box office hit: ‘Why are we making films…'
During an interview with YouTube channel Gobinath, the filmmaker responded, 'Why are we making films? Is it just because we want to make a high-yielding movie or a film that is authentic and, to an extent, a good film? Initially, it used to be whether a movie was good, bad, or just average, but now it goes too much into collections and all.'
Upon being questioned whether such boundaries would kill creativity, the director hoped that it would not happen in the days to come.
Mani Ratnam is currently busy with interviews, owing to the release of his movie Thug Life. The gangster actioner slated to release on June 5, 2025, features Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles, playing father and foster son.
The movie co-penned by Haasan and Ratnam features the tale of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, an aging gangster who is presumed to be dead. In his eyes, suspicions of his death led to his adopted son, Amaran, who has now become the head of his mafia gang.
With vengeance in his mind, Sakthivel decides to lead himself on a game of death to vanquish Amaran, highlighting how their destinies were always intertwined.
As Haasan and STR play the leading roles, the movie features an ensemble cast of actors like Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, and many more in key roles.
The makers of Thug Life recently attended the film's audio launch event. With the entire album composed by AR Rahman being unveiled, most netizens took notice of how one song was crooned by Shruti Haasan.

The Sridevi And Boney Kapoor Love Story Has A 1993 Mumbai Blast Link
New Delhi: Today marks the 62nd birth anniversary of the legendary actress Sridevi. Born on August 13, 1963, the actress left an indelible mark on the film industry with her versatility and charm on screen. Sridevi married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996, and the couple share two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's love story transcended societal norms. On her birth anniversary, let us revisit the timeline of her relationship with Boney. First meeting Boney Kapoor first saw Sridevi in the late 70s in a Tamil film. He decided to sign the actress for Shekhar Kapur's movie Mr. India. Despite being married to Mona Shourie Kapoor and having two kids – Arjun and Anshula – at the time, Boney fell deeply in love with Sridevi. During the filming of Mr. India, Boney went out of his way to woo her. He ensured she had the best makeup room, costumes, and amenities, catering to her every whim. 'When the shooting first started, I saw to it that she was the most comfortable on set, she got everything she wanted— even more. I was always ready with everything that she thought of, everything that she desired on set, and made sure she had the best makeup room, best costumes,' said Boney Kapoor at the India Today Woman Summit 2013. Love confession In an interview with Filmfare, Boney Kapoor shared that his love confession to Sridevi was initially met with anger and distance. After he revealed his feelings, the actress stopped talking to him for about six to eight months. However, things took a turn when Boney offered her shelter at his home after the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Over time, their relationship began to heal and mend. Later, Sridevi's mother fell ill in 1995, and Boney supported her during this challenging time. This strengthened their bond even more. 'Sri had begun drawing towards me," he recalled. Wedding and children Sridevi became pregnant with Boney's child in 1996, after which the producer finally separated from his first wife, Mona Kapoor. However, he never formally divorced her. Sridevi and Boney got married in June 1996 but made their relationship public only the following year, especially after Sridevi became visibly pregnant. The actress gave birth to their first daughter, Janhvi, on March 6, 1997. They welcomed their second daughter, Khushi, on November 5, 2000. Sridevi and Boney's relationship was not without its challenges. However, Boney and Sridevi's love for each other remained strong until her untimely death on February 24, 2018, due to accidental drowning in Dubai.

‘Coolie': Rajinikanth starrer sparks frenzy in Tamil Nadu, faces tax hurdles in Puducherry
Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' is enjoying massive buzz even before its release. The Tamil Nadu government has granted special permission for the film, which will hit theatres on August 14. According to The Hindu, cinemas in the state will be allowed to screen up to five shows a day, from 9 am to 2 am the following morning. Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth's first collaboration has generated sky-high expectations among fans. Advance bookings are in full swing worldwide, with tickets selling out rapidly. In Tamil Nadu, the first screening will begin at 9 am, while in Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, shows will start as early as 6 am. RAJINIKANTH CAUSES FAN RIOT DURING 'JAILER 2' SHOOT IN MYSORE Puducherry theatres struggle under heavy taxation In Puducherry, however, the release has hit a roadblock due to high entertainment taxes. While Tamil Nadu has reduced entertainment tax on Tamil films to 4%, Puducherry imposes double taxation — GST plus local entertainment tax. Tickets priced below ₹100 attract 12% GST, while those above Rs.100 incur 18% GST, both topped with a 25% local entertainment tax. This brings the total tax burden to nearly 45%, meaning almost half of the ticket revenue goes to the government. This heavy tax structure has left Puducherry theatres operating at a loss compared to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Limited release despite strong demand The Puducherry Cinema Owners Association met Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, requesting a reduction in entertainment tax. They pointed out that although the state has over 20 theatres, distributors hesitate to release big films under the current tax regime. The government, however, refused to lower the tax, citing ₹5 crore in annual revenue from it. After two unsuccessful rounds of talks, the number of 'Coolie' screenings in Puducherry was cut down. As a result, on August 14, the film will release in just 15 theatres across the state. A film to celebrate Rajinikanth's 50 years in cinema Coolie stars Sathyaraj, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and others, with music by Anirudh Ravichander. Its recent audio launch event in Chennai went viral, further fueling anticipation. The film also marks the celebration of Rajinikanth's 50th year in cinema.
