Cats press against windshield of U-Haul van outside Taco Bell. Officers take 134 from vehicle
Disturbing images provided by the Merced County Sheriff's Office show cats pressed up against the front windshield of the vehicle. More of the animals — some kittens as young as a week old — were found squeezed into cardboard boxes in the back.
A Long Beach woman was arrested on 93 counts of animal cruelty after 106 "extremely emaciated" cats and 28 dead cats were taken from the van, according to the Sheriff's Office.
According to a release posted to Facebook, a deputy discovered the cats in the van parked outside of the Taco Bell in Santa Nella. They immediately saw at least 20 cats in need of assistance through the car windshield.
Animal control officers removed the sick and dead cats. They found that there was no food or water inside the vehicle, the release said.
Officials said the cats' ages ranged from 1 week to 8 years old. The emaciated cats were taken to the Merced County Animal Services shelter to receive treatment.
The animals will be available for adoption once they are medically cleared, the release said.
Authorities identified the cats' owner as 69-year-old Jeannie Maxon, from Long Beach. She was booked into Merced County Jail. The case was under investigation, officials said.
The Sheriff's Office noted that the incident occurred on a summer day — the temperature in Merced County reached a high of 100 degrees on Sunday — and took the opportunity to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving any animal in a car.
"The Merced County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that leaving any animal in a vehicle during the summer months is very dangerous," the release said. "Please ensure that when you're traveling with your pet, they're provided with a cool place to stay, offering plenty of shade, lots of water, and food."

Arrest made in San Francisco bar stabbing that left patron gravely injured
A man was charged with attempted murder in what prosecutors called an unprovoked stabbing at a San Francisco bar last week, authorities said. The incident happened on June 24 at The Fishbowl Bar & Grill on Divisadero Street in the city's Lower Pacific Heights. In a press release, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office identified the suspect as 43-year-old Patrick Hamer. The D.A.'s Office cited court records as saying Hamer allegedly followed the victim into the bathroom of the bar and stabbed him multiple times in the face, neck and chest. Hamer also allegedly fought with other patrons trying to stop him and fled from the scene, according to the record cited by the D.A.'s Office. The San Francisco Standard identified the victim as Taylor "TJ" Vindigni, a bartender at The Snug cocktail bar on Fillmore Street. Vindigni was having a beer with a friend at Fishbowl after finishing a shift at The Snug, and went to use the restroom when he was attacked, the Standard said. The Standard also reported that Vindigni said the attack came from "a random stranger sitting at the bar." A GoFundMe online fundraiser for Vindigni's medical expenses and missed wages has raised $30,000 out of its $50,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon. The page indicated Vindigni suffered serious injuries that required treatment in the hospital's ICU. Aside from the attempted murder charge, Hamer was also charged with using a deadly weapon, inflicting great bodily injury, and mayhem. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday. The D.A. Office said Hamer remained in custody, and that the office would seek to keep him in custody due to the public safety risk he poses. Spectrum fiber network vandalism earlier this month is domestic terrorism, company says
Charter Communications is calling a June 15 attack on its communications network in Van Nuys an act of domestic terrorism, the company announced on Tuesday. The company said the determination was made based on the nature of the fiber cuts, the extent of damage, and the makeup of impacted customers. In all, more than 50,000 residential customers and more than 500 business customers were affected for up to 30 hours. "This is a pervasive and persistent threat to American families and businesses across the country that cannot be tolerated, and such life-threatening events should be declared acts of domestic terrorism and prosecuted accordingly," Chris Winfrey, President and CEO, of Charter Communications, said in a news release. Spectrum customers in Los Angeles and Ventura were affected on June 15 after the lines were cut early that morning in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles. In all, 13 cables were severed, including more than 2,600 individual fibers. The communication company said the damage affected emergency services, including a military base, emergency dispatch, and 911 communication services for local fire and police departments, financial institutions, court buildings, healthcare facilities and hospitals, educational institutions, as well as cell towers providing mobile services. At the time of the June 15 incident, Spectrum said telecommunications lines have been a target for vandalism because of the precious metals some companies use. Spectrum fiber optic lines do not contain any copper, according to the company. "This requires immediate attention from federal and state legislation classifying these attacks as a felony, dedicated engagement from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, and swift, aggressive prosecution of those criminals causing the perilous situation that results from these outages," Charter Communications wrote in a news release. As part of a more widespread problem across the nation, Charter said that between June through December 2024, the industry suffered nearly 6,000 intentional critical communications infrastructure attacks. Spectrum is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information related to these criminal infrastructure attacks that leads to an arrest. Man crashes into sheriff's deputies' car on e-bike while allegedly carrying illegal drugs in Inland Empire
A man in the Inland Empire allegedly gave deputies a fake name and tried to flee from them before riding an electric bicycle into the back of a sheriff's department squad car while carrying drugs, authorities say. According to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department, deputies performing a proactive patrol in Rancho Cucamonga around 1:39 p.m. Monday stopped a man who was riding an e-bike. The man, identified as a 42-year-old Los Angeles resident, allegedly gave the deputies a fake name when approached. While one of the deputies was exiting his vehicle to speak more to the man, the man fled the scene on the bike. The man then allegedly rode through the parking lot and crashed into the back of the deputies' marked vehicle, authorities said. The man then attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained by deputies. He tossed a backpack during the brief foot pursuit. Deputies eventually found a large amount of methamphetamine packaged in several individual baggies. A scale was also found inside. Authorities took the man to a local hospital for evaluation following his crash, then to West Valley Detention Center for booking. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale and transportation of a controlled substance. It was also determined that the man was on active probation for previous charges of resisting an executive officer and possession of a controlled substance with two or more priors. No additional details were made available.
