Foul play not suspected in deaths of 2 in vehicle at St. Paul shopping center
Officers responded to the Shamrock Plaza shopping center at McKnight and Lower Afton roads about 5:25 p.m. on a report of two people who were in a vehicle and possibly deceased, said St. Paul police Sgt. Toy Vixayvong.
St. Paul Fire Department medics pronounced both people dead at the scene. 'Officers on scene did not see any signs of foul play,' Vixayvong said in a statement.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office is assessing the situation, according to Vixayvong.

St. Paul police looking for hit-and-run driver who critically injured pedestrian
Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and critically injured a pedestrian Tuesday night in St. Paul. Officers were called about 10:50 p.m. and were told that a Nissan Sentra rear-ended a vehicle at Johnson Parkway and East Seventh Street, said Sgt. Toy Vixayvong, a St. Paul police spokesman. The Nissan's driver didn't stop, and the driver of the vehicle that was struck followed. About half a mile away, the Nissan hit a pedestrian in the area of Phalen Boulevard and Johnson Parkway. The Nissan left the area. The driver who followed the Nissan called 911 and their passenger began life-saving measures for the pedestrian, Vixayvong said. The pedestrian was unresponsive and St. Paul Fire Department medics took the woman to Regions Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Nissan was abandoned at Maryland Avenue and Phalen Boulevard. Police set up a perimeter with K-9 tracking and assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. They did not find the suspect. The Nissan had not been reported as stolen and police are working to determine who was driving it, Vixayvong said. The Brief A 73-year-old man is charged with attempted criminal sexual conduct after allegedly trying to sexually assault a 13-year-old. Investigators say the girl missed her school bus, and thought the 73-year-old was a security officer. Court documents show that instead of giving her a ride to school, he took her to his apartment. ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - It was a terrifying morning for a 13-year-old girl who was just trying to make it to school. Last month, after missing the bus, the girl ended up in a car with a man who is now charged with allegedly trying to sexually assault her. The City of St. Paul says that the man is a 73-year-old DSI Fire Inspector with The City. What we know Court documents say on May 21, a 13-year-old girl missed her school bus, and walked blocks to try to get to school. It was raining, and the girl stopped on Phalen Boulevard in St. Paul to go to a medical clinic to ask for help getting to school. That's where she encountered 73-year-old James Allen Thomas sitting in a gray SUV, near the entrance of the clinic. Thomas asked if the 13-year-old needed help. Court documents say she was shivering when she said yes, and through her iPad, she communicated that she needed a ride to middle school. Because of his uniform, she thought he was a security officer. Documents show Thomas turned off both his cell phones after leaving the clinic. Investigators say instead of taking the 13-year-old to school, Thomas drove her to his apartment on the 1100 block of Agate Street. Court documents say the girl noticed a foul smell and saw beer cans. He motioned for her to go to the bedroom, where Thomas attempted to sexually assault the girl. He then allegedly offered the girl $50 twice to do sexual acts with him, and she said no both times. Investigators say, afterward, Thomas grabbed the 13-year-old's iPad and asked if it had the location finder on. She said she didn't know and needed to get to school. Thomas then took the girl back to his car and started driving, court documents say. While driving, Thomas asked the girl several questions, including what her address was, to which she gave her school address. Thomas then took the girl to her middle school. Court documents say when the girl got out of Thomas' SUV she approached a school staff member and hugged them tightly and was shaking, visibly upset, that staff member told investigators. Thomas got out of the vehicle and told the staff member he was a "Sergeant with the St. Paul Fire Department." What they're saying The St. Paul Fire Department tells FOX 9 they don't have the ranking of sergeant or an employee named James Allen Thomas. The City of St. Paul says Thomas is a DSI Fire Safety Inspector II with the city. Documents show Thomas was arrested Thursday, admitting to seeing the 13-year-old in the clinic parking lot off Phalen Boulevard and giving her a ride to school. But he denied it took him 45 minutes to travel 6.5 miles to the girl's school. What's next The documents also say Thomas also denies trying to have sexual contact with the 13-year-old. He added that the girl looked about 10-years-old and seemed scared while she was with him. Thomas posted bail, and he is charged with kidnapping, second-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct and soliciting a child to engage in sexual conduct.

Bayport couple found dead in home; natural causes determined
A Bayport couple found dead in their home this spring died of natural causes, officials say. Candrice and John Ellickson were found March 11 after a neighbor who hadn't seen them in a week called to request a welfare check at their home on Lakeside Bay Drive South. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office does not list a timeline for how long the couple was deceased before being found, but police believe 'it was likely a few days,' said Bayport Police Chief Jay Jackson. Candrice 'Candy' Ellickson, 77, died of a hepatic tumor and obesity, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office. Her husband, John, died of diabetic ketoacidosis and cardiomegaly. The neighbor who requested the welfare check told police that he received a call from another neighbor asking if he had seen the couple lately because John Ellickson 'had not put his trash cans at the end of his curb as he always does,' the police report states. The neighbor who called police said he had not seen the couple since he plowed snow at their residence a week prior. After he was contacted by the other neighbor, he said he went to the Ellicksons' house and found the front door unlocked. He told police he yelled several times for John Ellickson, but got no answer. When the first police officer arrived, he found the front door unlocked and both of the Ellicksons deceased, according to the police report. A search warrant was issued, and officers searching the home 'immediately detected a moderate odor consistent with … deceased individuals,' the report states. Candy Ellickson was found on the couch in the upstairs living room; John Ellickson was found in an upstairs bathroom. Officers 'did not observe anything apparently out of place or that appeared suspicious in nature, and … did not immediately observe any sign of trauma to either decedent,' according to reports. Investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were called to the scene 'out of an abundance of caution due to the unusual circumstances of two people being deceased at the same time,' Police Chief Jay Jackson said. Both of the Ellicksons' carbon monoxide concentrations were within the normal range, he said. Family members told police that both of the Ellicksons had been sick with cold symptoms the month prior. According to a joint obituary, the couple devoted their lives to public safety. John Ellickson retired as deputy director of New Brighton's Department of Public Safety; Candy Ellickson retired as a dispatcher for the Washington County Sheriff's Office. 'They enjoyed traveling in their retirement, especially the southwestern U.S.,' the obituary states. 'They loved touring historical estates, watching movies, and dining out together.'
