Trump administration is reviewing all 55 million foreigners with US visas for any violations
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration said Thursday it is reviewing more than 55 million people who have valid U.S. visas for any violations that could lead to deportation, part of a growing crackdown on foreigners who are permitted to be in the United States . In a written answer to a question from The Associated Press, the State Department said all U.S. visa holders, which can include tourists from many countries, are subject to "continuous vetting," with an eye toward any indication they could be ineligible for permission to enter or stay in the United States. Should such information be found, the visa will be revoked, and if the visa holder is in the United States, he or she would be subject to deportation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Momcozy M9 Mobile Hands-Free Pump: Fixing Breastfeeding Challenges for Modern Moms. - TechBullion TechBullion Undo Since President Donald Trump took office, his administration has focused on deporting migrants illegally in the United States as well as holders of student and visitor exchange visas. The State Department's new language suggests that the continual vetting process, which officials acknowledge is time-consuming, is far more widespread and could mean even those approved to be in the U.S. could abruptly see those permissions revoked. There were 12.8 million green-card holders and 3.6 million people in the U.S. on temporary visas last year, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Live Events The 55 million figure suggests that some people subject to review would currently be outside the United States with multiple-entry tourist visas, said Julia Gelatt, associate director of the U.S. immigration policy program at the Migration Policy Institute. She questioned the value of spending resources on people who may never return to the United States. The State Department said it was looking for indicators of ineligibility, including people staying past the authorized timeframe outlined in a visa, criminal activity, threats to public safety, engaging in any form of terrorist activity or providing support to a terrorist organization. "We review all available information as part of our vetting, including law enforcement or immigration records or any other information that comes to light after visa issuance indicating a potential ineligibility," the department said. No more worker visas for commercial truck drivers The U.S. also will stop issuing worker visas for commercial truck drivers, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday on X. He said the change was effective immediately. "The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers," Rubio posted. The Trump administration in the past months has taken steps to enforce the requirement that truckers speak and read English proficiently. The Transportation Department said the aim is to improve road safety following incidents in which drivers' ability to read signs or speak English may have contributed to traffic deaths. The State Department said later Thursday it was pausing the processing of these work visas to review its "screening and vetting protocols." "Ensuring that every driver on our roads meets the highest standards is important to protecting the livelihoods of American truckers and maintaining a secure, resilient supply chain," the department said. Edward Alden, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said foreign workers have helped address a labor shortage of commercial truck drivers. "This action should be seen as part of a concerted effort by the administration to discourage American companies and other institutions like universities and hospitals from hiring and retaining foreign workers," Alden wrote in an email. "The goal here is not to target specific classes of workers, but to send the message to American employers that they are at risk if they are employing foreign workers. The economic consequences will be far larger than just visas being stripped from foreign workers in a few job categories." New review of all visa holders is a major expansion The administration has steadily imposed more restrictions and requirements on visa applicants, including requiring them to submit to in-person interviews. The review of all visa holders appears to be a significant expansion of what had initially been a process focused mainly on students who have been involved in what the government perceives as pro-Palestinian or anti-Israel activity. Officials say the reviews will include all visa holders' social media accounts, law enforcement and immigration records in their home countries, along with any actionable violations of U.S. law committed while they were in the United States. The reviews will include new tools for data collection on past, present and future visa applicants, including a complete scouring of social media sites made possible by new requirements introduced earlier this year. Those make it mandatory for privacy switches on cellphones and other electronic devices or apps to be turned off when an applicant appears for a visa interview. "As part of the Trump Administration's commitment to protect U.S. national security and public safety, since Inauguration Day the State Department has revoked more than twice as many visas, including nearly four times as many student visas, as during the same time period last year," the State Department said. The vast majority of foreigners seeking to come to the U.S. require visas, especially those who want to study or work for extended periods. Among the exceptions for short-term tourist or business visits are citizens of the 40 mainly European and Asian countries belonging to the Visa Waiver Program , which grants those nationals a stay of up to three months without having to apply for a visa. But large swaths of the world - including highly populated countries like China, India, Indonesia, Russia and most of Africa - are not part of the program, meaning their citizens must apply for and receive visas to travel to the United States. Earlier this week, the department said that since Trump returned to the White House , it has revoked more than 6,000 student visas for overstays and violations of local, state and federal law, the vast majority of which were assault, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and support for terrorism. It said about 4,000 of those 6,000 were due to actual infractions of laws and that approximately 200 to 300 visas were revoked for terrorism-related issues, including providing support for designated terrorist organizations or state sponsors of terrorism.

'Terror support seen in operations of gaming companies'
NEW DELHI: IT & electronics minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said government detected instances of money laundering and terror support in operations of real-money gaming entities. He stated that large companies failed to self-regulate and take "good and effective steps to prevent harm" to society, even as the common public lost money, prompting individuals and families to commit suicides. "We observed instances of money laundering as well as terror support. And that's why we kept it. Also, the way this (real-money) addiction was growing, this would have caused serious harm to society... Many suicides happened practically across every part of the country. We saw news of families committing suicides because of losses they made in online money games. This was clearly visible to the industry also. If they took good and effective steps to prevent the harm, obviously things would have been different," the minister told TOI on a day Parliament cleared 'The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025' that bans money games in India. On statements given by the industry that their operations would collapse, Vaishnaw said there will be orderly growth after a clear regulatory mandate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The gaming industry will continue to grow... E-sports and online social gaming will be promoted as a part of this bill. The online money game is what is getting regulated. The game makers will get new opportunities and the gaming industry will continue to grow for the parts, which are beneficial to society. The social games include Sudoku and the online social games include chess. There are so many games which are part of our life, and promoting those is part of this." The minister said there was unanimity across party lines to take action against money games. "Practically every MP from every party or every society, every state has been asking for strict action on this. People from across the spectrum, whichever party, whichever state, whichever language, have been asking for action on it because it's visible in society today." Asked whether it was a political decision then, he said, "The harm to society is very real. Vaishnaw said the industry was clearly aware of the issues but did not take remedial measures. "We engaged with the industry for more than three years. Attempts were made to make the industry understand the harms. And, the industry is certainly getting the feedback from society also." Asked about loss of investments and FDI in a sector, which was seen as a sunrise industry till just a few years back, he said money will continue to come in. "Gaming as an activity, which is part of e-sports and part of online social games will continue to grow. Investments will come in those segments. The bill also has a provision for creating an authority to promote online social games and e-sports." He said the IT ministry will keep a tab on potential job losses in the industry, even as they expect employment to grow. "Game makers will get many more opportunities to create new games in e-sports and online social game segments. They will get newer opportunities because we are actively promoting that." Regarding the menace of offshore illegal games, the minister said the new law will tackle their growth. "We are continuously taking enforcement action against illegal offshore apps and are continuously blocking them. In this legislation, when the liability is also on financial transactions that will also help us in effectively blocking illegal apps." HC seeks clarity on govt's move on Kaleshwaram project report
1 2 Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday sought clarity from the state govt on whether it intends to place the Justice PC Ghose Commission report on the Kaleshwaram project before the assembly first or whether it will act on the report and then lay it before the House for discussion. "This is a crucial question. We need clarity before proceeding further. We need not observe anything more without your answer," a division bench of Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice GM Mohiuddin told advocate general A Sudarshan Reddy, who appeared for the state. On his request to obtain instructions, the court adjourned the matter to Friday. The bench was hearing petitions filed by former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao and former minister T Harish Rao, who challenged the commission's notices and findings. Their counsels argued that the notices issued were defective as they were only summons and not notices as mandated under section 8B of the Commissions of Inquiry Act. They contended that this denial of due process vitiated the proceedings. They stressed that they were not given an opportunity to cross-examine witnesses who deposed before the commission, a violation of their rights. "The commission was tasked with inquiring into the planning, design, and execution of the project—not into allegations of corruption or irregularities. Yet, imputations against the petitioners are being made public without due process," the counsels argued. Citing judgements in the cases of inquiries held on former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and former Union home minister LK Advani, the counsels sought to strike down the notices and also the findings of commission report. Countering these arguments, the AG submitted that the petitioners were well aware of the notices and even sought documents from the commission, which were duly provided. "A notice does not become invalid merely because a specific section is not cited," he argued. He also contended that since both petitioners are members of the state assembly, they would have the opportunity to participate in the debate on the commission's report once it is tabled in the House. Any judicial intervention at this stage, he cautioned, could impede legislative proceedings. "The commission was set up in the larger interest of the state to identify what went wrong. Its report must first be debated in assembly. Any orders here may pre-empt that process," the AG told the bench. Public domain controversy On the petitioners' grievance that the report had already entered the public domain, the AG denied it. He assured the court that the cabinet has decided to place the report before the assembly shortly for discussion. The petitioners, however, pressed for court protection, alleging that their reputations were being irreparably harmed. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
