Before the Yankees boarded their flight from Atlanta to Toronto on Sunday night with what they hoped was some newfound momentum, Aaron Judge called it a 'good time to start getting hot.'
Three days later, inside the visiting clubhouse at Rogers Centre on Wednesday night, the only thing hot was the temper of the fan base following a horrific defensive showing that capped off another miserable series against the division-leading Blue Jays.

Still, despite the Yankees' malaise now stretching back six weeks, during which they have gone 14-21, Judge insisted there were better times and a hot stretch ahead.
'Oh, it's coming,' the captain said with a grin. 'We haven't hit our hot streak yet, but we're going to. When it does, watch out.'
But it is hard to take real steps forward when the Yankees keep shooting themselves in the foot.

The closest thing the Yankees have had to a consistent stretch of good baseball recently was their five-game winning streak shortly before the All-Star break. But that was preceded by two six-game losing streaks, and since coming out of the break, they have not put their best foot forward.
'As frustrating as it is and as pissed off as you are when we don't play our best against a team ahead of us, we also have to understand it's a series and we got to keep moving,' manager Aaron Boone said.

While another baserunning mistake loomed over their first game of the second half, they rebounded to win the next two games before their defense fell apart again in Toronto to drop two of three.

The Yankees keep wanting to tell anyone who will listen they are a better fundamental team than last year — when a lack of clean baseball proved to be their downfall on the biggest stage of all, the World Series — except their actual play has more often indicated otherwise.
'When it's not perfect and you're not just pounding teams, you got to do little things right within games to give you a chance to win those close ones,' Boone said.
The Yankees, who were a season-high 17 games above .500 before this tailspin began, should get some reinforcements over the next week ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. But even the best haul will not be a cure-all for the Yankees if they cannot start playing a crisper brand of baseball.
'I think it's about everybody collectively saying, 'I got to step up, I got to focus a little bit more. Go out there and just do my job,' ' Judge said. 'That's what it comes down to: Do your job.'
What was once a seven-game lead atop the AL East was a four-game deficit entering Thursday.
For now, the Yankees will spend the next six weeks tracking the Blue Jays from afar before seeing them one last time (in the regular season, at least) the first weekend of September in The Bronx.
But by going 6-1 against the Yankees in a span of three weeks (to make it 7-3 overall), the Blue Jays have already clinched the season series, meaning they would have the tiebreaker if the teams are deadlocked after 162 games.

Of course, there's a long way to go between now and then.
And the Yankees would be hard-pressed to even have a chance at winning the division if they don't improve on their record within the AL East (11-18).
For now, their most immediate order of business is cleaning up their game and getting out of their own way.

'I still bet on our guys,' Boone said.
'I do think there's a steadiness to the group and a quiet confidence because we've been just OK for over a month now,' he added. 'It's been a lot of winning a few, losing some, couple little losing streaks that you always want to try to avoid. But I do feel like there's an underlying confidence with this group. That said, we understand that we have to play better, especially within the division, if we're going to get to the places we want to go.'

Tarik Skubal and AL Central-leading Tigers outduel Zack Wheeler and Phillies 7-5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — All-Star starter Tarik Skubal won his first game since June and Javier Baez homered, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies and ace Zack Wheeler 7-5 on Saturday. Skubal (11-3) limited the Phillies (62-48) to three runs and five hits over seven innings while striking out 10. He struck out six of the first seven batters he faced, and didn't relent until the seventh. With AL Central-leading Detroit ahead 5-0, Bryce Harper opened with a single, J.T. Realmuto knocked him in with a double before Nick Castellanos golfed a two-run homer to center, cutting the Tigers' lead to two runs. Baez added a two-run double in the eighth, but Harper (three hits) negated that with a two-out, two-run shot — his 18th of the season — off reliever Will Vest. But, Detroit's Kyle Finnegan finished off the Phils with a four-out save. Wheeler (9-5) took the loss, allowing solo home runs by Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenter in the third inning, then a two-run shot by Baez in the seventh. Keith and Wenceel Perez each had three hits for the Tigers (65-47). The Phillies threatened in the sixth when Weston Wilson hit a pitch off the top of the fence for a double, the Phillies' second hit of the game. But with two outs, Kyle Schwarber hit a sky-high foul pop that Tigers left fielder Riley Greene grabbed via a long-distance sprint and brilliant sliding catch. Key stat Wheeler gave up a season-high three home runs to the Tigers. The only time he had allowed more than one in a game was on July 12 in San Diego when the Padres hit a pair in a 5-4 victory. Up next The series concludes Sunday with Detroit veteran RHP Charlie Morton (7-8, 5.42 ERA) taking on the Phillies' lefty Cristopher Sanchez (9-3, 2.55). ___

Beck's 3-run homer lifts Rockies to 8-5 win over over Pirates, Skenes

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Jordan Beck ended Paul Skenes' scoreless streak with a three-run homer in Colorado's six-run sixth inning, and the Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 on Saturday. Warming Bernabel continued his stellar start to his big-league career with two doubles and a single and Orlando Arcia homered for Colorado. Jaden Hill (1-0) picked up his first major league win for the Rockies, who withstood a three-homer day by Pittsburgh's Liover Peguero. Skenes hadn't allowed a run in 18 straight innings before faltering in the sixth. Beck followed a leadoff single and walk with his 13th home run, and Bernabel's double chased the NL All-Star starter. Skenes allowed four runs and five hits while striking out eight in five-plus innings. Braxton Ashcraft (3-2) came on and gave up three hits that put the Rockies ahead 6-4. Skenes cruised through the first three innings before Beck singled with one out in the fourth and went to third on Bernabel's double, but he escaped without giving up a run. Peguero's first two home runs — the first leading off the game and a three-run shot in the fifth — gave Pittsburgh a 4-0 lead. He added another solo shot with two outs in the ninth to cap his first multi-homer game of his career. The game went into a rain delay for 1 hour, 4 minutes, before the start of the eighth. Key moment Colorado closer Seth Halvorsen left in the ninth inning with a full count on Spencer Horwitz. Halvorsen's right arm was hanging in discomfort after throwing his fifth pitch. Key stats Bernabel has at least one hit in each of the first seven games of his career. He has four doubles, three home runs and a triple among his 14 hits this season and is batting .500. Up next Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (4-10, 3.69 ERA) will face Rockies RHP Bradley Blalock (1-2, 7.09) on Sunday. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 3

Rookie Agustín Ramírez hits two solo homers as the Marlins beat the Yankees 2-0

MIAMI (AP) — Rookie Agustín Ramírez homered twice for the only runs of the game and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Yankees 2-0 on Saturday. Eury Pérez pitched six innings of two-hit ball as the Marlins won their fourth straight and clinched the series against the Yankees following Friday's 13-12 series-opening win. After experiencing problems with his pitchcom device that caused three brief delays in the first inning, Pérez (4-3) struck out six and walked three in his 88-pitch outing. Relievers Ronny Henriquez and Tyler Phillips followed Pérez with perfect innings before Calvin Faucher retired the three batters he faced in the ninth for his 11th save. Miami has won six consecutive series and is 29-14 since June 13. The Marlins struck quickly when Ramírez connected off Yankees starter Cam Schlittler in the first. Ramírez drove a fastball 421 feet into the left-center field seats for his 16th homer. Ramírez hit another solo drive against Schlittler (1-2) in the fourth. Making his fourth major league start since being promoted from Triple-A on July 9, Schlittler allowed two runs and four hits while striking out six in five innings. Saturday's announced attendance of 34,645 surpassed the Marlins' previous season-home high of 32,299 in Friday's opener against New York. Key moment Pérez struck out Ryan McMahon and retired Anthony Volpe on a groundout after he allowed a one-out double to Ben Rice and walked Paul Goldschmidt in the fifth. Key stat Marlins left fielder Kyle Stowers had his sixth assist of the season when he threw out Trent Grisham at the plate as he attempted to score from second on Giancarlo Stanton's single in the first. Up next RHP Luis Gil will make his season debut when he starts the series finale for the Yankees on Sunday. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been sidelined since spring training because of a lat strain. The Marlins will go with RHP Edward Cabrera (4-5, 3.35). ___ AP MLB:
