Karan Johar opens up on the decline of multi-starrers in Bollywood

Hans India19 hours ago

Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar, who once brought iconic multi-starrers like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna to the big screen, has voiced his concern over the fading trend of ensemble films in Bollywood. In a recent interview, Karan candidly spoke about the challenges of making multi-starrers in today's cinema landscape. 'It's very difficult now,' he said. 'Actors today come with strategies, advisors, and ideologies. Back then, no one thought so much.
When Shah Rukh Khan said yes to K3G, he didn't even read the script. He just knew it was my film and agreed. That kind of conviction is missing now.' According to Karan, the current generation of actors tends to overanalyze every move, often swayed by friends, family, and social media feedback. 'Even if I explain the benefits of doing a multi-starrer, by the time they go home and talk to their circles, the decision is changed. We need that old-school conviction to return,' he emphasized. He also pointed out that today's lead stars demand hefty remunerations without acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the box office. 'In those days, it was easier to bring stars together. Now, it's layered with hurdles, including budgets,' Karan added.
Despite the challenges, he expressed excitement for War 2, which features Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. 'This is the biggest multi-starrer of the year. Two megastars from different industries coming togetheris rare and special. It's like a dream lineup,' he said. Karan's remarks reflect the evolving dynamics of Bollywood, where collaboration is often compromised by calculation.

(Also read: Rajinikanth, Lokesh Kanagaraj's massive salaries for Coolie revealed: Report) 'Lokesh is a whistle factor. I was with him on the streets of Chennai, and there's a huge fan following for him. We went out for lunch, and people kept coming to him. He's a whistle factor himself,' he said during the interaction. He went on to add about the film, 'I have a very important character in the film. I must thank Loki for the way he has presented me. Coolie is a full-on whistle film… My favourite film is Vikram and the roles of Fahadh Faasil, Vijay Sethupathi, and even the nanny (Agent Tina) are fantastic. In Coolie, keeping Rajni sir aside, there's Upendra from Kannada, Aamir Khan from Hindi, and myself, and all of these characters stand out. That is the trump card of Coolie.' Coolie, directed by Lokesh and produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures, stars Rajinikanth in the lead role. Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR and Monisha Blessy make up the rest of the cast. Filming was wrapped up in March this year after its announcement in 2023. Aamir Khan has a cameo in the film. Lokesh and Chandhru Anbazhagan penned the script and dialogues for the film. Anirudh Ravichandar composed the music. Coolie will release in theatres on 14 August and clash with Ayan Mukherji's Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR-starrer War 2.

Kuberaa vs Coolie: Nagarjuna Akkineni REVEALS how different Lokesh Kanagaraj and Sekhar Kammula are as directors

Nagarjuna Akkineni is eagerly gearing up for the release of his movie Kuberaa, co-starring with Dhanush. Ahead of the film hitting big screens on June 20, 2025, the veteran actor was asked to reflect on the difference between working with Lokesh Kanagaraj and Sekhar Kammula. In his conversation with Galatta Plus, the actor highlighted how both are very similar in communication, but hail from different schools of filmmaking. Nagarjuna said, ' Sekhar Kammula is very real, whether it be the clothes of the people, hairstyle, or other details. Lokesh, on the other hand, believes in larger-than-life, that is my kind of cinema and I love it.' 'In one example, Sekhar would come up to me and say, Nag, you are walking like a hero…calm it down, nah. He will ask me to bring it down a little, even hunch a bit. However, Lokesh would say, Sir…walk in like a tiger when you walk into a room. I need people to be scared of you with a simple look,' he added. Commenting on the director's two different approaches to making movies, Nagarjuna highlighted how Kammula wants his characters to be as real as possible. On the other hand, Lokesh would make one look larger than life, even with a simple camera angle. Coming to the movies, Kuberaa is a social thriller venture, focused on the story of a beggar who is incorporated into a system of deceit manipulated by a chartered accountant. However, things take a turn when the beggar outsmarts the CA, with the rest of the movie being a battle of their intellect. Apart from the leading actors, the movie has Rashmika Mandanna, Jim Sarbh, Dilip Tahil, and many more in key roles. On the other hand, Coolie is an action entertainer headlined by Rajinikanth. The much-awaited movie features Nagarjuna Akkineni and Upendra Rao in key roles, with Aamir Khan playing a special cameo appearance. As Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and more play pivotal roles, the film is slated to hit the big screens on August 14, 2025. Interestingly, this would make the flick have a clash release with Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR starrer War 2.
