:: Volkswagen previews upcoming entry-level electric model
Volkswagen has teased a look at its upcoming compact electric vehicle due to be fully unveiled at the beginning of March.
Ahead of a production-ready model premiering in 2027, this early look showcases a compact car that will sit at the smaller end of the current Volkswagen range. In a social media clip, both the Lupo and Up! – two of Volkswagen's previous most-compact models – are shown preceding the arrival of the brand-new car.
Volkswagen is targeting an entry price of €20,000 – around £16,650 – for the new model, which is predicted to only be offered with an electric powertrain, rather than with a petrol or hybrid alternative.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, said that the new model would be 'an affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe. This is the Champions League of automobile manufacturing.'
The new model will be one of a number of compact models coming from Volkswagen, with the new-range process kicking off with the production version of the ID.2all prototype vehicle, which is expected to reach dealerships in 2026. Like this new concept, the production ID.2all is targeting a low cost with Volkswagen stating a price of under €25,000, or around £20,819. It's due to be based on the same MEB modular electric platform that has been used on other ID models, such as the ID.3 and ID.Buzz electric van.
Schäfer also made a fresh commitment to Volkswagen's Wolfsburg plant, stating that it would remain core to the German manufacturer's processes. He said: 'The Wolfsburg plant has a clear perspective for the future.
'The agreed relocation of the Golf to Mexico will free up space for advanced technologies. In Hall 54, new production procedures will be introduced. We intend to produce the electric Golf successor on the new SSP platform there, as well as the high-volume electric T-Roc. This way, we will be making Wolfsburg the capital of our new all-electric compact class.'
:: Volvo's EX30 gets rugged Cross Country version
Volvo has expanded its current EX30 line-up with the introduction of a new Cross Country version.
Following in the footsteps of cars like the V60 and V90 Cross Country, the EX30 Cross Country is a more rugged take on Volvo's smallest electric SUV.
Like the models before it, the main points of difference between the EX30 Cross Country and the standard car include a boost in ride height to help it navigate larger obstacles, as well as bigger wheels which can be equipped with an all-terrain tyre as an option.
The EX30 Cross Country also benefits from chunky front and rear skidplates and wheel arch extensions that help to give the car a more go-anywhere appeal. Volvo says that owners can also choose from a wide-spanning range of extras, including a roof basket and mudflaps.
Inside, the Cross Country features much the same layout as the standard EX30, with a screen-centric design. The main infotainment system uses Android Automotive software, too, meaning that many Google-based services – such as Maps – come pre-loaded and can be used without the need to connect a smartphone.
To help boost traction, the EX30 Cross Country uses a dual electric motor setup bringing all-wheel-drive in the process. Volvo says that the EX30 should manage up to 265 miles between charges, while a 10 to 80 per cent top-up could be achieved in 26 minutes when hooked up to a suitably rapid charger.
Volvo has yet to announce full pricing and specifications for the EX30 Cross Country with further details released 'in due course'.
:: Former professional footballer Sergio Aguero to become Porsche racing driver
Former professional footballer Sergio Aguero has swapped the football pitch for the race track with Porsche's Formula E racing team.
The ex-Manchester City star from Argentina will make a one-off appearance at the Formula E Grand Prix in Miami from March 5 to March 6.
Appearing as part of an 'Evo Sessions' content series, Aguero will be one of a number of celebrities that will get behind the wheel of Formula E vehicles this season. Other stars include Brooklyn Peltz Beckham and Lucien Laviscount.
Aguero will be driving a Porsche 99X Electric, and will be given training from the firm's e-sports works team while being supported by Formula E world champion, Pascal Wehrlein.
Aguero, said: 'This is absolutely crazy: from footballer to racing driver in one of the fastest racing cars in the world. Every child is familiar with Porsche. The brand represents an iconic heritage, particularly in motorsport. With this in mind, I am absolutely delighted and would like to thank everyone involved for this opportunity. I want to learn as much as possible on my journey to Miami, and to represent the team as well as possible when we get there.'
The car that Aguero will be driving can do 0-60mph in under two seconds and features special software which independently adjusts its brake energy recuperation settings for every corner of the race track.
Florian Modlinger, director of factory motorsport of Formula E at Porsche, said: 'The 99X Electric is one of the best Formula racing cars in the world. To drive it demands a lot of respect and meticulous preparation.'
Before getting behind the wheel, Aguero will be undergoing racetrack training in Porsche's road-going sports cars before entering the Formula E race in Miami next month.

Volkswagen California: can it do big miles and random semi-extreme camping?

The Arctic. Minus 20°C. Sounds just about perfect for a Top Gear mini-break in a VW Cali' A cosmic sea lapping against the shores of our atmosphere, that's the way I think of the aurora borealis. I've seen the northern lights in full force before, and it really was a gently gobsmacking moment, waves of greens, yellows and reds blushed across the night sky in watercolour washes, wonder reflected in the backs of eyes. At the spring equinox, some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 12 miles from the Russian border with Finland, camped on an ice lake as far from artificial light pollution as I could reasonably get, I thought I had a chance of a repeat performance. Nope. There's nothing. Nada. Zilch. It's -20°C, I can't be bothered to put on enough clothes to go outside and it wouldn't matter if I did – the sky has been painted institutional grey by clouds intent on Valium views. Still, we hoped for the lights, but what we're actually here for is an untypically deep dive into whether or not the new Volkswagen California camper is actually any good at big miles and random semi-extreme camping, and how aggressively this Ocean spec can defend a price of more than £80k. So far, so unhypothermic, I'm already counting it as a win. We began, some 700 miles ago, in Helsinki. A longer than anticipated supply run in an absolutely enormous Finnish supermarket for vital survival foods (mainly Jaffa Jims and coffee, the Jims being indigenous Jaffa Cakes, you have to be adventurous in foreign climes), before barging our way to Kempele, just south of the larger town of Oulu for a quick 'n' dirty overnight. Photography: John Wycherley Initial impressions of the Multivan-based California are good. It's got the kind of acceleration that's best described as a gentle push from kind hands, 62mph from rest reached in something around 10 seconds, the point something lost in the mildly gruff combination of 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine and seven cog DSG gearbox. The changes are fast, the engine powerful enough at just over 200bhp/236lb ft, but this is a big thing – 2.4 tonnes of weatherproof textile and metal – and we've jammed a bit more than the 450ish kg of official payload into its gut. But it'll settle right back at motorway speeds, especially the Finnish max of 62mph, steering, suspension and brakes all the gentle side of good enough. It's a lightly cumbersome car, but a very nippy house, and small and swivelly enough to negotiate a tight underground car park or urban traffic without needing HGV training. Big miles are easily – if relatively sedately – covered without issue. It is not, however, the easiest thing to convert to overnight accommodation when you're very tired and everyone else in the crew has a convenient hotel room. And you're staying in the back end of what amounts to a truck stop. It also doesn't have a toilet. Or a shower. Which will become relevant later. But we're going for rest here, not necessarily relaxation, so I just fold the rear pair of seats (the Cali is a four seater) – after reversing the headrests – flap out the mattress pad, swivel the dual captain's chairs, attach/insert/pull down the blackout window blinds and set the auxiliary petrol heater to max. And then wait a bit for it to warm up... most of the above requires open doors and fiddling, and it's still into the double minus figures, and snowing. I don't pop the popup roof, it's not insulated enough and I would likely freeze in some sort of really unfortunate rictus, so low roof it is. And it's... nice. Warm, at least, but with a slight lack of storage and minimal headroom. Yes, you've got cupboards, but not many, and there's no space for a portable toilet, so I resort to, um, bottles. But it's actually a decent bed for one, although tight for two. And you lose the upper sleeping deck when it's too cold.

Elon Musk's Tesla is 'not interested' in producing cars in India

Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is "not interested in manufacturing in India", the country's heavy industries minister has remarks were made on Monday as the Indian government issued detailed guidelines for a scheme to promote EV manufacturing in the country. This is the first time that India has publicly admitted that it has not been able to lure investment dollars from Musk, even after unveiling incentives for global EV giants last March. Minister HD Kumaraswamy confirmed that Tesla would open two showrooms in India and have a retail presence. "Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia have shown interest [in manufacturing electric cars in India]. Tesla - we are not expecting from them," Kumaraswamy said. Another official told the Press Trust of India news agency that a Tesla representative had participated in the first round of stakeholder discussions for the manufacturing scheme but "was not part of the second and third round".The comments come on the back of US President Donald Trump saying in February that it would be "unfair" for the US if Tesla built a factory in India. Over the years Tesla has had several rounds of negotiations to enter Tesla's EVs win over India's price-conscious buyers? The company's original plans to open a base were shelved in 2022 after the Indian government insisted that Tesla make cars locally. The carmaker had said it wanted to export to India first so that it could test 2023, Musk said he was "trying to figure out the right timing" to invest in the Indian met Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year in Washington DC where the two discussed the "immense potential" for collaboration in technology and year India cut import taxes on EVs for global carmakers which committed to investing $500m (£369m) and starting local production within three years. This came after Musk complained that high import duties were preventing the carmaker from entering India. But analysts say the Indian EV market may not be mature enough yet for Tesla to invest locally - EV sales still make up less than 3% of overall passenger vehicle sales in India, and locally made alternatives can cost half of what consumers will have to shell out for Tesla's base model. Charging infrastructure and local road conditions could be further deterrents. India's Tata Motors currently leads India's EV market with over 60% market share. MG Motors - jointly owned by India's JSW and a Chinese firm - is second at 22%. Globally, Tesla has been facing growing competition from Chinese players such as BYD. Its sales plummeted to their lowest level in three years in the first three months of 2025 after a backlash against Musk and his role in the Trump administration. Musk announced his departure from his government role last week.

Already battling with weak European demand and stiff competition from abroad, German carmakers Volkswagen, BMW ( opens new tab and Mercedes-Benz ( opens new tab are in talks with the U.S. administration for a deal to soften the blow of import tariffs. The Ifo survey found companies' assessment of their current situation improved somewhat in May but remained at a low level of -35.3.
