Daryl Morey provides bold claim on recovering Sixers star Joel Embiid
The Philadelphia 76ers are looking to move on following a disappointing 24-58 season. Following a busy 2024 offseason which included landing the big free agency prize in the form of Paul George, and a slew of proven veterans in this league, the Sixers were thinking championship.
Instead, nothing came to fruition as injuries decimated the roster and coach Nick Nurse and Co. suffered through a miserable season. The plan was for George to join Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to lead a deep playoff run, but that ended up not working out.
Embiid, especially, played only 19 games due to a bothersome left knee injury and the big fella had to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery in April. It is the second procedure Embiid has undergone on the knee over a span of 14 months and it is fair to wonder if he will ever get back to the same level he was before.
However, President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey had a bold claim on the recovering Embiid when he hopped on the "Rights to Ricky Sanchez" podcast:
If Joel comes back, it's going to be at a very high level. I actually don't see a scenario where he's fading...I understand that wasn't his best year. My point is different though. My point is I see him playing at a high level, and that's so important to him that he will either get himself there or not. That's my feeling. I think he views himself correctly as an MVP-level guy. And I don't—yeah, I mean obviously this is up to him—but I don't see these scenarios where he's in a mode of a much lesser version.
Embiid struggled through the 19 games he played in 2024-25. He averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, but he shot only 44.4% from the floor and 29.9% from deep as it was obvious that the knee was bothersome. One has to hope that he can fully recover and get back to the level he was once at when he was one of the best players in this league.

Hall of Fame QB Thinks Aaron Rodgers is Still Elite: ‘Arguably One of the Best Arms of All Time'

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20, 2024. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now Many are of the belief that Aaron Rodgers is washed, especially considering that he turns 42 in December, but NFL legend Peyton Manning thinks the four-time league MVP quarterback can still play at an elite level and lead a team to a Super Bowl. 'I think so,' Manning said at the Golden Bear Pro-Am in Ohio last week when asked if Rodgers could play championship football. 'Look, the guy's super talented, probably has arguably one of the best arms of all-time. He's just kind of elastic. I don't have any insight on that, hopefully he gets with a team soon and kind of gets going. It'll be fun to see him back on the field.' Advertisement Last season with the New York Jets, Aaron Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also had a 90.5 quarterback ratting. In comparison, Russell Wilson threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions with a 95.6 quarterback rating last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wilson played in 11 regular season games compared to Rodgers' 17. Rodgers could probably get the Steelers to 9-10 wins and a playoff berth, but a Super Bowl run seems very unlikely. The Steelers have been waiting on a decision from Rodgers for over two months, and according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the four-time league MVP quarterback hasn't made a verbal commitment to the organization. Advertisement 'I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he's coming,' Pelissero said during an appearance on theRich Eisen Show on Friday. '… There's all these signs that he's coming but he has not affirmatively said 'Hey, June 9 book me the ticket. I'm coming in and I'm going to join this team.' That has not happened as of this point.' All signs point to Rodgers eventually signing with the Steelers, as the 41-year-old QB dropped a major hint earlier this month. During a concert on May 17 in Austin, Texas with his friend and artist, Mike Stud, Rodgers held a Q&A with the crowd. At one point during the session, a girl asked him if he would ever play for the Chicago Bears. Rodgers replied, 'No. But I believe there is a team that might play in Chicago this year, a road trip to Chicago. I love Chicago, though, way more than they love me. It's been a great relationship all one way.' Advertisement The Steelers play the Bears in Week 12 at Soldier Field. The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints also both play at Chicago this season, but they're not considered clear-cut favorites to land Rodgers like the Steelers. Rodgers even shut down the idea of playing for the Saints. Rodgers was later asked if he would sign with the Steelers, and he gave a rather ambiguous answer. 'You never know,' Rodgers said. 2025 UFL MVP Power Rankings: Jordan Ta'amu on top as regular season comes to a close

With the UFL regular season coming to a close, there are just three players to consider for the title of UFL MVP. But one stands above the rest. Here's a look at my updated MVP rankings following Week 10: 3. Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez Week 10 stat line: 26-of-32 for 283 passing yards Week 10 result: 23-6 win over San Antonio Perez is the only quarterback to start every game for his team this season, which is no small feat in a league that is built around playing 12 consecutive weeks with 10 of those weeks counting toward the regular season. For the second year in a row, Perez has won the UFL passing title. This year, he did while being the only passer to complete at least 70% of his passes. Had the Arlington Renegades made the playoffs, Perez might've won the UFL MVP for his consistency in excellence alone. As it stands, the 2023 XFL champions enter this offseason with a .500 record but with the foundation to push for their first UFL playoff appearance next season. 2. Michigan Panthers QB Bryce Perkins Week 10 stat line: N/A Week 10 result: 19-12 loss to Houston Despite missing three games this season, UFL coaches still opted to name Perkins to the All-UFL team — the only QB to receive that honor. With that acknowledgment, it's clear that the Panthers wouldn't be a postseason team for a second year in a row if not for Perkins' efforts as a backup and then a starter for Mike Nolan's team. His 1,342 passing yards with nine passing and four rushing touchdowns is remarkable given the sample size in a league that is defined by its quarterback play. Frequently, the strength of that position will give an indication of the ceiling the team has, and Perkins' play demonstrated that, as the Panthers are capable of winning their first UFL championship. 1. DC Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu Week 10 stat line: N/A Week 10 result: 13-8 loss to St. Louis No player has been more important to his team's winning than Ta'amu. Had he not sat out the final game of the season, Ta'amu might've finished No. 1 in passing yards and touchdowns. Through nine games, Ta'amu was the only player to throw for more than 2,100 yards while averaging 13.9 yards per completion. The Defenders did not finish as strong as they started, but their signature wins came early. Ta'amu led them to a Week 1 victory against the defending UFL champs, who they could meet in the UFL title game. Then in Week 3, he led them to a 27-15 win against the St. Louis Battlehawks in St. Louis. No doubt, Ta'amu will remember that when the Defenders and Battlehawks meet again this weekend in St. Louis for the XFL Conference Championship. Jalen Williams answers biggest lesson he's learned from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Jalen Williams answers biggest lesson he's learned from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Looking like a Gen Z version of Michael Jordon and Scottie Pippen, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams have headlined one of the most dominant squads in NBA history. The Oklahoma City Thunder are four wins away from a championship to cement their spot. While not apples-to-apples — at least not yet — you have a superb-efficient 30-point scorer and an elite two-way wing in each duo. The Thunder have translated their 68-14 record to playoff success. They made the Western Conference field look like a walk in the park. Since arriving in 2022, Williams has been tied to Gilgeous-Alexander. Both have ascended in their respective career trajectories. Williams went from a small-school lottery pick to an All-NBA member. Gilgeous-Alexander went from a first-time All-Star to a first-time MVP winner. Now on the cusp of an NBA championship, Williams has had a front-row view to see Gilgeous-Alexander grow into one of the league's icons. He had a chance to reflect on their three-year journey together ahead of the 2025 NBA Finals Game 1. "His mentality. Just a winner. He just has an 'I'm going to get it done' mentality. I think that's kind of rubbed off on the rest of the team. You can always see, he doesn't make excuses. I think that bleeds over into the team," Williams said. "I would say I've probably taken that from him. I think that's where he's grown up as a leader. Not saying he wasn't earlier on in his career but just for our team he's been really good leading us that way. He's a good, like, lead-by-example." If the Thunder beat the Pacers, Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams will be two of the biggest reasons. They've headlined their team this season as both became All-Star and All-NBA teammates. Your best players are naturally going to spend a lot of time together, so it's insightful to hear his thoughts on his growth in intangibles.
