Azalina: Amendments to the Penal Code to address harassment, insults and bullying
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (picture) noted that the amendments were introduced to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act A1750), which was approved by the King on Feb 25 this year and gazetted on March 7.
'It introduces new sections, 507B to 507G, specifically to address bullying committed by any means and methods, including online.
'These amendments provide for offences related to harassment, threats, bullying, insults and misuse of identity information, including situations that may lead to suicide attempts as well as cases where the person provoked attempts or commits suicide,' she said in a statement here today.
She said offenders are liable to imprisonment for a term that may be extended up to 10 years, and a fine or both.
'…it is the responsibility of every citizen to study and comply with these laws that are now in effect,' she said.
She advised the public to obtain information directly from the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department or the Legal Aid Department for clarification on the amendments.
'Keep in mind that ignorance of the law is not an excuse. A clear understanding of one's rights and responsibilities under the law is the first step towards building a safer, more ethical and humane society,' she added.
She also called on all ministries, agencies, organisations and institutions to consistently update their employees' knowledge of current legal developments and to ensure internal policies and procedures comply with the relevant provisions. — BERNAMA

PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is still investigating the case in which it arrested two home ministry officials and a member of the public in May over alleged corruption in expediting citizenship applications. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said MACC cannot divulge any details on the investigation so far. 'According to MACC, the case is still under investigation. As such, MACC is legally bound by subsection 29(4) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 not to disclose any of the investigation's details,' she said in a parliamentary reply. Azalina was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked the prime minister if there had been any developments on the arrests on May 8. MACC had said the trio were arrested in an operation in Putrajaya after it received information related to the case. It said the arrests were linked to Op Outlander, which saw the arrest of a civil servant believed to have been the mastermind of a syndicate allegedly registering non-citizen births as Malaysian citizens using fake supporting documents. Azalina also said MACC cannot answer as to the status of its investigation into the late Daim Zainuddin and former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as one of the cases relates to a matter that is sub judice, or under judicial consideration. 'The question is in violation of 23(1)(g) of the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, and thus should not be answered,' she said. Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) had asked the prime minister to state the status of MACC's investigation into Daim and Ismail, including whether the investigation involves their family members and the total value of the assets involved. In June, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the agency had finished its probe into the corruption and money laundering allegations linked to Ismail. He said the investigation paper had been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor's office for further action, and a decision on whether to press charges may be made 'within a month'. Ismail, the Bera MP, had been called in by MACC for multiple rounds of questioning since February. MACC is investigating the discovery of about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit, seized in raids on the residences of four men and three other premises believed to be 'safe houses'. It was also reported in May that MACC had opened eight new investigation papers into 'high-value' assets linked to Daim and his family members after receiving new information from overseas. MACC said in July that the value of the overseas assets, found in more than 10 countries including the US, the UK, Switzerland, Singapore, Italy, Japan, Indonesia and several African countries, are estimated to exceed RM3 billion.

14 arrested following fight in front of cafe in Pontian
PONTIAN: Fourteen people were arrested following a brawl in front of a cafe in Taman Kota Emas early yesterday. District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the incident about 4.25am took place in front of Show Cafe. He said, acting on a report on the incident, a team from the district Criminal Investigation Department arrested 14 men aged between 13 and 26. He added that the report that was lodged claimed the complainant's younger sibling was beaten up in the incident and had to receive treatment at Pontian Hospital. "Police have opened investigation papers under sections 427 (committing mischief, causing damage to the amount of RM25), 148 (possessing weapons) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Penal Code," he said in a statement. Shofee urged those with information on the incident to contact the district police hotline at 07-6869999.

Pontian cops nab 14 allegedly involved in gang fight
PONTIAN: The police have arrested 14 men aged from 13 to 25, were arrested by police for allegedly being involved in a fight where a male victim was injured. Pontian OCPD Supt Mohammad Shofee Tayib said the suspects were apprehended after the victim's brother lodged a police report claiming his sibling had been beaten up. "We received the report at 4.23pm on Sunday (Aug 10) and the victim has been admitted to Pontian Hospital for treatment," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 11). Supt Mohammad Shofee said that the police have opened an investigation paper and the case is being investigated under Section 427, Section 148 and Section 326 of the Penal Code. "We would like to remind the public to refrain from spreading and sharing the video or information of the fight which is yet to be verified," he said. He called upon those with details and information on the case to directly contact the Pontian police hotline at 07-686 9999.
