Selangor Umno strengthens grassroots ties
KLANG: Selangor Umno is making efforts to strengthen ties with its grassroots members to fortify the party's position in the state.
The state chapter's youth chief Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin said the usual practice was for the main leadership to liaise only with top division chiefs rather than directly with grassroots members.
'We want to change that. That is why we recently gathered members from our 22 divisions to talk with them and inform them of Selangor Umno's stand and objectives for them to understand our plans and vision,' said Mohd Imran.
He referred to a massive gathering attended by almost 1,500 grassroots members earlier this week.
Mohd Imran said the purpose of the gathering was also to show that Umno, as a party, not only has its 'soldiers' but also a large number of supporters
He added that this adds value to the party and the unity government at the state and federal levels.
'We want to show our visibility. The number of seats we hold in the state may just be two but Umno is not about the leaders, it is about the party's grassroots supporters,' he said.
Selangor Umno's two state seats are currently Sungai Air Tawar (Datuk Rizam Ismail) and Dusun Tua (Datuk Johan Abd Aziz).
Mohd Imran also said Selangor Umno is strengthening solidarity among state party leaders and enhancing grassroots support for the party.
'We want to have a strong position in the state, regain the people's trust, and reclaim Malay support in Selangor.
"That is also why, as the party's youth chief, I want our youth members to return to the basics and engage with the grassroots members,' he added.
Mohd Imran said it is crucial for Umno Selangor to convey to grassroots members that the party will always defend Islam, Malay rights, and the sovereignty of the Malay rulers.

Land registered under Daim, Mahathir, Musa, Sanusi transferred to Umno
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here today ordered the transfer of a 9,723sq m parcel of land in the capital to Umno. The order was issued by Judge Roz Mawar Rozain after Umno's counsel, Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun, informed the court that Umno and the Federal Territory Land and Mines Office had reached a settlement for the land to be transferred. In her consent judgment, Roz Mawar said the property, identified as Grant 78154, Lot 40, Section 51, Kuala Lumpur and registered under (Tun) Daim Zainuddin, Datuk (now Tun) Musa Hitam, Datuk Seri (now Tun) Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri (later Tan Sri) Sanusi Junid as trustees, was held in trust for the benefit of Umno. "The land registered under the names of the trustees shall be vested and registered under Umno with full rights, interest and ownership in accordance with Section 9(b) of the Societies Act 1966. "The Federal Territory Registrar of Titles or Land Administrator must execute and register the vesting of the said land within 30 days, pursuant to Section 420 of the National Land Code 1965," she said. Speaking to reporters later, Hafarizam said the land was better known as the site of the Seri Pacific Hotel. "With this order, all issues surrounding the ownership of (the hotel) are resolved," he said. On the trustees' alleged refusal to transfer ownership, Hafarizam said the court's order put the matter to rest. "This ruling renders the ongoing polemic over whether the trustees signed the transfer moot. The court granted our application with the Land and Mines Office's consent, allowing the property to be transferred from the four trustees to Umno," he said. He added that the order takes effect immediately and must be implemented within 30 days. On March 6, Umno executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan filed an originating summons naming the Federal Territory Land and Mines registrar as the sole defendant. In the suit, Umno sought a court order for the ownership of the land to be transferred to the party pursuant to Clause 27.1 of Umno's Constitution and Section 9 of the Societies Act 1966. Umno also asked that the Federal Territory Registrar of Titles or Land Administrator execute the transfer by entering a memorial in the land title document. In his supporting affidavit, Sumali said that based on Form Schedule 17, an application for consent to transfer dated Oct 27, 2015, had been signed by all four trustees, along with a statutory declaration dated Oct 22, 2015. "Two of the trustees have since passed away — Sanusi on March 9, 2018, and Daim on Nov 13, 2024. Daim's death was widely reported across offline and online platforms, including social media, news portals, newspapers, radio and television," said Hazira. Sumali added that Umno's office bearers, including its president, deputy president and secretary-general, had agreed via a statutory declaration dated Dec 10, 2015, to re-register the land under the party's name.

Report filed over derogatory term used on Orang Asli MP Ramli
Ramli Nor became Malaysia's first Orang Asli MP in 2019 when he was elected to the Cameron Highlands seat. PETALING JAYA : A group representing veterans of the police's Orang Asli unit has lodged a report on the alleged use of a derogatory term against Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Nor on Facebook. The report, filed yesterday by Bah Bi Bah Kerundang, who leads the Senoi Praaq police veterans' association, concerned a Facebook comment which allegedly used the term 'sakai' and belittled Ramli's intelligence. He said the comment was insulting to Ramli, Malaysia's sole Orang Asli MP, as well as the indigenous community, and called for action against the Facebook user. Ramli, who is also a Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, became Malaysia's first Orang Asli MP when he was elected to the Cameron Highlands seat in a by-election in 2019. He won with a majority of 3,238 votes. He defended the seat for a second term in the 2022 general election, winning with a greater majority of 4,544 votes. A former police officer who retired from the force with the rank of assistant commissioner, Ramli is also an appointed member of the Umno Supreme Council.

PAS needs intellectual, moderate leaders to broaden support, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: PAS needs intellectual and moderate leaders, not just loud or outspoken politicians, to win broader support, according to an analyst. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the Islamic party must project such leaders to counter the perception among non-Malays that PAS is an extremist party. 'What PAS needs is not just a vocal leader, but someone who is intellectual and moderate, especially to ease fears among non-Malay communities,' he told FMT. Azmi was commenting on a recent move by Alor Setar PAS to nominate the party's election director, Sanusi Nor, for the vice-president's post ahead of the party elections in September. PAS Dewan Ulama committee member Mokhtar Senik gave Sanusi's nomination his '200%' support, citing the latter's bold and outspoken nature. Azmi said the majority of voters were likely to judge Sanusi based on his performance as Kedah menteri besar, particularly compared with other PAS-led states like Perlis, Kelantan, and Terengganu. Advertisement 'In terms of development, Kedah is seen as on par with those three states,' he added. Meanwhile, Syaza Shukri of International Islamic University Malaysia said Sanusi stood a strong chance of winning the vice-presidency although she expected the race for the position this time to be highly competitive. 'There's no denying that he enjoys strong grassroots support, and that's his biggest strength,' she said. Sanusi declined nomination for the vice-president's post during the 2023 party elections, saying he had already turned down the offer twice before. The PAS vice-presidency is currently held by Kemaman MP Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Bagan Serai MP Idris Ahmad, and Kelantan state assembly speaker Amar Abdullah. None of the three was challenged in the last election.
