Tourist Loses Both Hands While Allegedly Trying to Photograph Shark
Turks and Caicos Department of Environment and Coastal Resources said in a press release last week that a tourist had been injured by a shark on Friday, Feb. 7 off the coast of Providenciales, the main island of the Turks and Caicos archipelago.
"Further to the investigation, it has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs," the agency wrote.
Additional details surfaced in a GoFundMe campaign organized by the victim's brother-in-law over the weekend, which stated that the unnamed woman actually lost both hands in the attack. Though, it did not mention whether she had been taking photos at the time.
"While on what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, my sister-in-law and her husband, my brother, lived what can only be described as a nightmare," the campaign stated. The woman was apparently wading in clear, hip-deep water when the shark bumped into her legs. However, after circling, the shark then bit her thigh.
"Not satisfied, the shark came back again and when she put both hands in front of her to protect herself, the shark cut off both of her hands, one at mid forearm and the other at the wrist," the campaigned explained. "Her husband, having rushed back to help, then managed to wrestle away the shark and stayed between her and the shark until she walked out of the water and collapsed on the beach."
First responders provided first aid on the beach before the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. However, she was then flown back to Canada by air ambulance to undergo further surgical procedures.
"This is something that has completely altered their life in the blink of an eye," added the brother of the woman's husband, who was an over 30-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Following the incident, a beach closure was issued in the area where the woman was attacked through Sunday, Feb. 9, until it was determined that the shark had moved into deeper waters.
"The DECR would like to urge the public to always be aware of your surroundings, follow local advisories, and respect marine life," the press release advised. "Swim in designated areas, avoid murky waters, never swim alone, and do not attempt to feed marine wildlife under any circumstances."

Boy, 9, dies following attack at Green Line train station in West Loop
A 9-year-old Humboldt Park boy has died after falling down the stairs and hitting his head in the wake of an argument that turned physical at a CTA train station in the West Loop earlier this month. An autopsy performed Tuesday determined that the boy, Elijah Flores, died of blunt force injuries to the head in a death that was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. As of late Tuesday afternoon, more than nine days after the incident, no arrests had been made as Belmont area detectives investigated, Chicago police said. The Cook County state's attorney's office confirmed to the Tribune that it had been notified of the investigation, but provided no further details. Late in the morning on August 10, a 22-year-old man traveling with Elijah got into a verbal altercation with two other men at the Clinton Green Line stop at 540 W. Lake St., according to police and the CTA. The argument turned physical when one offender struck the 22-year-old in the back with an unknown object, causing him and the boy to fall down the stairs. Authorities have not publicly stated the man's relationship to the boy. Elijah was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead on Saturday. The offenders fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said. In an statement, CTA officials said they 'extends its deepest condolences to the family of Elijah Ramon Flores,' adding they would continue to work with police as they investigate. Police have not yet released an image of the suspects. Two GoFundMe pages have been launched to help with funeral expenses. One had amassed more than $16,000. 'Elijah was excited to start a new school year, full of dreams and innocence,' the page reads. According to the page, Elijah suffered 'life-threatening head and brain injuries' and was ultimately declared brain dead. An organ donor, Elijah 'will give others an opportunity to live by donating his organs,' the page states. Donations received through the fundraiser, the page states, will go directly to Elijah's mother to help cover funeral expenses and medical bills. A second GoFundMe raising funds for funeral costs and expenses had amassed nearly $1,200 as of Tuesday night.

Rehoboth man arrested, charged with assault in connection with missing pregnant teen
A 22-year-old Rehoboth man was arrested and charged in connection with the assault of a pregnant 18-year-old the day before she went missing, but it's unclear if authorities have found the teen. Gregory Groom is charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness for acts he is accused of committing on Aug. 6 against Kylee Monteiro, 18, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. Monteiro has been missing since Aug. 7, the day after Groom has been accused of assaulting her. The district attorney's office did not state whether Monteiro is still considered a missing person as of Tuesday, but stated the investigation continues. Groom is being held without bail and will be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Wednesday morning, the office said. The statement did not say what Groom's relationship to Monteiro is. Rehoboth Police described Monteiro — who was reported missing on Thursday, Aug. 7 — as 6 feet tall and heavyset, with light brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a red T-shirt with the phrase 'get over it' printed on the front, ripped blue jeans and tan boots. Her sister, Faith Monteiro, wrote on Facebook that a vigil for Kylee Monteiro will be held at 401 Winthrop St. at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. 'We will be providing everyone with a candle,' Faith Monteiro posted. 'All we ask is that you show up. Please share this post so that we can spread as much awareness as possible. We encourage everyone to join us, whether you know Kylee or not. Thank you for all the support and we hope to see you there!' Along with the vigil, Kylee Monteiro's sister, Catherine Monteiro, set up a GoFundMe to help spread awareness. If she is found, 'the remaining donations will either go directly to Kylee to help her financially while she deals with this unimaginable trauma or for funeral arrangements if need be,' Catherine Monteiro wrote. She added that the family is working on offering a reward for whoever finds Kylee Monteiro. 'If anyone feels guided to donate or sew into this cause, that would help tremendously,' Catherine Monteiro wrote. So far, the GoFundMe has received eight donations totaling $190. Anyone who wants to donate to the family directly can do so by reaching out on Facebook, Catherine Monteiro wrote. The campaign's goal is $4,500. Rehoboth Police told MassLive on Tuesday that Kylee Monteiro's disappearance remains under investigation and no new information was available. On Aug. 13, Massachusetts State Police, a search and rescue team and other law enforcement looked for Kylee Monteiro in the area of County Street, where she was last seen walking, The Sun Chronicle reported. Police have used dogs and drones in their search for her. A dive team searched the waterway at the Warren Upper Reservoir in Rehoboth. Before she disappeared, Kylee Monteiro had an argument with her boyfriend, Monteiro's family told WCVB-TV. Newlywed Bride Fatally Stabbed in Home Depot Parking Lot Used Her Last Words to ID Husband as Killer
Aliccia Grant, 37, had just gotten married to Stephen Dennis, 36, when he fatally stabbed her while they were sitting in their car in a parking lot NEED TO KNOW Aliccia Grant, 37, was stabbed to death in September 2024 by her new husband while sitting in her car in a Home Depot lot Her husband, Stephen Dennis, 36, said they were talking about annulling their new marriage, say authorities Grant leaves behind two children An Arizona man who was convicted of fatally stabbing his newlywed wife in the parking lot of a Home Depot in 2024 has learned his fate. On Monday, Aug. 18, Stephen Dennis, 36, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his wife, Aliccia Grant, 37, a mother of two, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced. Earlier this year, Dennis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. 'This wasn't just a violent crime — it was an act of betrayal carried out by someone who should have been a source of safety, not fear,' Mitchell said in a press release. 'There is something especially cruel about a murder that takes place within a relationship that's intended to be built on trust. We will continue to aggressively pursue and hold violent domestic abusers accountable.' The shocking murder took place in the early morning hours of Sept. 9, 2024, when Phoenix Police responded to a call about a stabbing outside a Home Depot in north Phoenix. 'Witnesses walking nearby heard a woman screaming for help and discovered the victim in the driver's seat of a red Prius with multiple stab wounds,' Mitchell said in the release. Dennis, who was in the front passenger seat, got out of the vehicle, argued with a bystander, then fled the scene on foot after grabbing a bag from the car, witnesses said, according to Mitchell's release. Witnesses and officers rendered aid to Grant. 'As one of the officers continued to apply pressure to the victim's wounds, the victim made a dying declaration identifying Dennis as her attacker,' Mitchell said in the release. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Shortly after the incident, Dennis called 911 and admitted to stabbing his wife, Mitchell said in the release. He also told officers where to find the murder weapon, which they were able to recover. In a GoFundMe set up to defray funeral costs and to help support Grant's two children, 10 and 16, her family wrote, 'Although Aliccia was taken from us far too soon, her endlessly hopeful energy left a permanent mark of inspiration on all of us who knew and loved her. 'She will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, cousin, and friend, but most of all as a wonderful mom to her two beloved kids."
