Tourist Loses Both Hands While Allegedly Trying to Photograph Shark
Turks and Caicos Department of Environment and Coastal Resources said in a press release last week that a tourist had been injured by a shark on Friday, Feb. 7 off the coast of Providenciales, the main island of the Turks and Caicos archipelago.
"Further to the investigation, it has been determined that the tourist had attempted to engage with the animal from the shallows in an attempt to take photographs," the agency wrote.
Additional details surfaced in a GoFundMe campaign organized by the victim's brother-in-law over the weekend, which stated that the unnamed woman actually lost both hands in the attack. Though, it did not mention whether she had been taking photos at the time.
"While on what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, my sister-in-law and her husband, my brother, lived what can only be described as a nightmare," the campaign stated. The woman was apparently wading in clear, hip-deep water when the shark bumped into her legs. However, after circling, the shark then bit her thigh.
"Not satisfied, the shark came back again and when she put both hands in front of her to protect herself, the shark cut off both of her hands, one at mid forearm and the other at the wrist," the campaigned explained. "Her husband, having rushed back to help, then managed to wrestle away the shark and stayed between her and the shark until she walked out of the water and collapsed on the beach."
First responders provided first aid on the beach before the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. However, she was then flown back to Canada by air ambulance to undergo further surgical procedures.
"This is something that has completely altered their life in the blink of an eye," added the brother of the woman's husband, who was an over 30-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Following the incident, a beach closure was issued in the area where the woman was attacked through Sunday, Feb. 9, until it was determined that the shark had moved into deeper waters.
"The DECR would like to urge the public to always be aware of your surroundings, follow local advisories, and respect marine life," the press release advised. "Swim in designated areas, avoid murky waters, never swim alone, and do not attempt to feed marine wildlife under any circumstances."

Boy, 9, dies following attack at Green Line train station in West Loop
A 9-year-old Humboldt Park boy has died after falling down the stairs and hitting his head in the wake of an argument that turned physical at a CTA train station in the West Loop earlier this month. An autopsy performed Tuesday determined that the boy, Elijah Flores, died of blunt force injuries to the head in a death that was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Late in the morning on August 10, a 22-year-old man traveling with Elijah got into a verbal altercation with two other men at the Clinton Green Line stop at 540 W. Lake St., according to police and the CTA. The argument turned physical when one offender struck the 22-year-old in the back with an unknown object, causing him and the boy to fall down the stairs. Authorities have not publicly stated the man's relationship to the boy. Elijah was transported to Lurie Children's Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead on Saturday. The offenders fled the scene in an unknown direction, police said. In an statement, CTA officials said they 'extends its deepest condolences to the family of Elijah Ramon Flores,' adding they would continue to work with police as they investigate. Police have not yet released an image of the suspects. Two GoFundMe pages have been launched to help with funeral expenses. One had amassed more than $16,000. 'Elijah was excited to start a new school year, full of dreams and innocence,' the page reads. According to the page, Elijah suffered 'life-threatening head and brain injuries' and was ultimately declared brain dead. An organ donor, Elijah 'will give others an opportunity to live by donating his organs,' the page states. Donations received through the fundraiser, the page states, will go directly to Elijah's mother to help cover funeral expenses and medical bills. A second GoFundMe raising funds for funeral costs and expenses had amassed nearly $1,200 as of Tuesday night.

Rehoboth man arrested, charged with assault in connection with missing pregnant teen
A 22-year-old Rehoboth man was arrested and charged in connection with the assault of a pregnant 18-year-old the day before she went missing, but it's unclear if authorities have found the teen. Gregory Groom is charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness for acts he is accused of committing on Aug. 6 against Kylee Monteiro, 18, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. Monteiro has been missing since Aug. 7, the day after Groom has been accused of assaulting her. The district attorney's office did not state whether Monteiro is still considered a missing person as of Tuesday, but stated the investigation continues. Groom is being held without bail and will be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Wednesday morning, the office said. The statement did not say what Groom's relationship to Monteiro is. Rehoboth Police described Monteiro — who was reported missing on Thursday, Aug. 7 — as 6 feet tall and heavyset, with light brown hair and brown eyes. He also told officers where to find the murder weapon, which they were able to recover.
