Driver of van involved in accident that killed 10 women in Pune arrested
Pune, Aug 12 (PTI) Police on Tuesday arrested the driver of the van which fell into a ditch in Pune district, killing ten women devotees heading to a temple a day ago, and booked him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, an official said.
The van driver, Hrushikesh Karande, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, committing acts endangering life or personal safety of others and being involved in illegal transportation, said an officer from the Pimpri-Chinchwad police.
Ten women on their way to a temple were killed and 30 others injured after a pick-up van packed with passengers fell off the road on a hilly terrain and plunged into a ditch on Monday afternoon in Pune district, police had said.
The vehicle carrying over 40 passengers, most of them women and children, veered off the road and plunged 25 to 30 feet after it failed to climb an incline – possibly due to overloading — and rolled back down before toppling into the ditch at around 1 pm.
The victims, who hailed from Papalwadi village, were headed to Shree Kshetra Mahadev Kundeshwar Temple in Khed tehsil in the western Maharashtra district to mark the auspicious Monday of the ongoing Shravan month when the accident took place near Pait village. PTI SPK RSY

1200 cyber criminals, 484 drug peddlers arrested in 6 months in Jharkhand: DGP
Ranchi, Aug 15 (PTI) Intensifying drive against cyber crime and illegal drug trade, the Jharkhand police nabbed 1200 cyber criminals in six months since January, besides arresting 484 involved in narcotics trade, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta said on Friday. Gupta said the police are committed to curb illegal opium cultivation and destroyed its crop on 27,000 acres of land. He was addressing the 79th Independence Day function at the state police headquarters here. 'Jharkhand police destroyed opium crop on 27000 acres of land, arrested 484 drug peddlers between January and June this year, and seized narcotics worth Rs 34 crore. It arrested 700 accused involved in cyber crime in the six months, in addition to nabbing 474 cyber criminals through the Pratibimb app," the DGP said. The DGP also asserted that the police have waged a war to wipe out Naxalism from the state, and 17 of them were killed during encounters, while 197 were arrested in six months, and 10 were forced to surrender. The complainant, Deepak Kothari, has alleged that the couple defrauded him of over Rs 60 crore, which involved Shetty and Kundra's now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd. According to Kothari, he invested the amount between 2015 and 2023 under the pretext of expanding a business, but the money was allegedly misused for personal expenses. EOW is now investigating the case. Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra Call Allegations 'Baseless' After the complaint, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's lawyer denied the allegations, saying they were purely civil in nature and had been adjudicated by the NCLT Mumbai on October 4, 2024. 'This is an old transaction, wherein the company went into financial distress and eventually got entangled in a long legal battle at the NCLT. There is no criminality involved, and our auditors have submitted all the necessary supporting documents from time to time, as requested by the EOW, including detailed cash flow statements," said advocate Prashant Patil. 'The investment agreement in question is purely in the nature of an equity investment. The company has already received a liquidation order, which has also been placed before the police department. The concerned Charter accounts have visited the police station for the last one year for more than 15 times with all the evidence supporting the claims of my clients," the lawyer added. Patil called the case 'baseless and malicious", which was aimed at maligning Kundra and Shetty. He also said appropriate action is being initiated from their side against the perpetrators.
