
Criticism of Santander's decision to close Blackwood branch
Santander has announced its Blackwood branch will be closing in June this year, while Caerphilly's will be reducing its hours.
Blackwood has been named in a list of 95 branch closures by the bank, which first entered the UK market in 2004 with its takeover of former building society Abbey National.
The high street branch in Blackwood will close its doors for good on June 23, while the Caerphilly branch will have its hours reduced, opening only on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.30am to 3pm, from June 30.
Around 750 of its staff across the UK will be at risk of redundancy.
A spokesperson for Santander UK said the closures were down to changing customer behaviour.
In this letter, the Member of the Senedd for South Wales East wrote: "Before becoming a Senedd Member, I spent many years working in the retail banking sector for companies like Abbey, The Principality and Santander.
"I actually worked briefly at the Blackwood branch and could see firsthand how valued that branch is to the town and beyond.
"Loyal Santander customers relied on it for their banking and the personal touch they got inside the branch.
"The branch was also invaluable to the thriving businesses of the town centre who will be forced to travel much further afield when banking their takings.
"In making this decision, have you considered the impact upon the digitally disenfranchised?
"I have been the Plaid Cymru spokesperson for Older People and know how much of a problem branch closures are.
"Older people often lack the knowledge or even the confidence for E-Banking.
"This is true for many disabled people as well.
"At a time when Santander is boasting of huge profits exceeding targets and returning 10 Billion Euros to shareholders, this is not a good look.
"I urge you to reconsider your decision with regard to the Blackwood branch as well as your decision to reduce the opening hours of the Caerffili branch."
In response, a spokesman for Santander wrote: "I want to reassure you that Santander is committed to ensuring customers can safely bank with us through a range of channels, including in-person at branches and ATMs, or through our online and telephone banking services.
"We will be contacting all impacted customers regularly over the coming months with support, with additional support for vulnerable customers including proactive follow-up phone calls from branch colleagues.
"As you note, customers can also use over 11,000 Post Office branches for their banking needs."
Following the response, Peredur said he was "deeply disappointed."
He added: "Banks like Santander make huge annual profits and their loyal customers are a big reason for this.
"This is a poor way of repaying people in Blackwood and the surrounding area for their custom over the years.
"I am deeply disappointed that large corporations such as Santander are quick to forget the customers – not to mention the staff in branches like Blackwood - who make their business the success it is.
"I would not be surprised if Santander customers now vote with their feet and take their business elsewhere."

Average two-year mortgage rate falls below 5pc for first time since Truss mini-Budget

He said: 'This year, borrowers coming off fixed rates will largely fall into two groups: those whose low five-year fixed rates date back to the pandemic era, and those who took two-year deals following the rate peaks after the Truss-era market shocks. 'With mortgage rates widely expected to continue trending downwards, many borrowers see shorter-term fixes to lock in a lower rate now while keeping the option to benefit from future cuts sooner.' Mortgage rates had surged in the wake of Kwasi Kwarteng's spending review in September 2022, which included £45bn in unfunded tax cuts, triggering turmoil in UK financial markets. On October 20 2022, the average two-year fixed-rate mortgage hit a peak of 6.65pc. Mr Mendes said borrowers increasingly opted for two-year fixes in the hope that rates would fall. Several lenders have since cut rates below 5pc, however, Wednesday marked the first time that average two-year deals had fallen below the threshold in almost three years. According to UK Finance, about 900,000 fixed-rate mortgage deals are due to expire in the second half of 2025, with 1.6 million fixed deals having ended or are due to end across the whole of the year. Bank of England base rate cuts could help to ease cost pressures on some borrowers, with last week's reduction in the base rate taking it from 4.25pc to 4pc.

TotallyMoney and Moneycomms have released a review of the student bank accounts currently available - here are the best options for anyone heading off to university A-Level results are due to be released tomorrow (Thursday, August 14) and many students will be wondering which bank account they should get ahead of starting their studies. TotallyMoney and Moneycomms have analysed the student accounts on offer for those embarking on higher education this September. Alastair Douglas, CEO of TotallyMoney advised: "If you're heading off to college or university this September, then it's worth shopping around and having a look to see if there's a student bank account out there that might help you save money over the next few years." He claimed that "most will try and entice you with an interest-free overdraft, but it's worth remembering that you'll have to pay this money back at some point". He added: "It's worth thinking about your finances in general, as you might be taking out a student loan and moving into shared accommodation where you're splitting bills, and you'll probably have a thin credit file too. "So download a free personal finance app to help you budget and build your credit score. That way you could be leaving higher-education with a First Class Masters in managing your money." It comes after news that Nationwide will pay bonus £760 into accounts of customers who do one thing. Santander Douglas shared his thoughts on the Santander Edge account, saying: "The Santander Edge account offers a wide range of perks, which includes cashback at a range of retailers, and a free four year Railcard. "However, you will need to make this your main account and deposit a minimum of £500 every four months. You'll also be entered into a prize draw, and you could bank up to £100k." If you choose Santander Edge, expect your first year to include a maximum overdraft of £1,500, with the required deposit each term. Year two and three will follow with the same overdraft limits. However, year four will see that amount increase to £1,800, and further still to £2,000 in year five. The incentives include: • Free four-year 16-25 Railcard (worth £115) • Access to Santander 'boosts' – cashback offers at Greggs, Tesco, Café Nero and other retailers • Entry in prize draw – prizes from £100 to £100,000 (minimum £20 guaranteed) Halifax Douglas continued, stating: "Halifax will give you £100 cash if you open an account and deposit £500 by the end of October, and 15 percent cashback at certain retailers. "You'll also get up to £90 in Deliveroo vouchers if you use the card often enough – which could come in handy if you fancy treating yourself to a takeaway." The overdraft similar to Santander, with £1,500 for the first three years, differs at the fourth year where £2,000 is offered for year four and five. Revealed: The area where parents would pay £81,000 MORE to buy a home near a good school
Parents are willing to pay tens of thousands of pounds extra for a home in the catchment area of a top state school - and Labour's VAT hike on private school fees is driving up competition. According to Santander, parents would pay an average of £45,000 extra to secure a home in the catchment of an Ofsted-rated 'good' school. Almost three in four parents say they would be willing to pay over the odds to live in an area where their children would be prioritised for a place at such a school. On average, parents would be willing to pay 15 per cent more to live within 'good' catchment boundaries, some £44,736 extra on top of the Halifax House price index's average price tag of £298,237. School catchment areas are the geographic areas around a school and children who live in that area are usually considered first when it comes to places. Some 73 per cent are willing to pay a premium to secure a spot in one of these areas - and this has jumped compared to 63 per cent last year as competition heats up for state school spots. Private school fee hike drives up competition Places in top state schools are the latest hot commodity after January's VAT hike of as much as 20 per cent on school fees. VAT had never before been charged on private school payments, but Labour's manifesto revealed it would scrap the exemption for private schools, which previously saw them free of the 20 per cent tax. This came into force in January of this year in a bid to bolster the Treasury's dwindling coffers. And competition for state school spots is only set to get hotter, as 21 per cent of parents say they plan to pull their children out of private schools in the wake of the higher fees. Of this group, some 69 per cent say they would relocate to get their children into the best state school catchments, Santander says. David Morris, head of homes at Santander, says: 'Parents are understandably digging deep into their financial and emotional reserves to give their children a great education. 'There is good news for parents however, as a record number of properties coming to the market, combined with stabilising interest rates and improved affordability, will hopefully help some of them bag an outstanding home in their dream catchment area.' What's the good school premium in YOUR area? London parents willing to pay an extra 15 per cent to buy their home would have to fork out an extra £81,000 on the average house price, bringing the total to £620,901. In the south east it's a £58,239 hike to £446,499, while in the east of England it's a £50,174 jump to £384,668. In the east midlands, parents could pay £36,777 more, in the west midlands it's a £39,040 premium while in the southwest parents are happy stumping up £45,346 more. For the north west the premium works out at £36,344, in Yorkshire and the Humber it's £32,330, while in Northern Ireland it's £32,225. For Scottish homes, a 15 per cent premium is an extra £32,286 while for Welsh homes it's £34,189. The lowest premium is on homes in the north east homes where a 15 per cent premium works out at £26,588, hiking a home's price tag to £203,839. Such is the clamour for a place at a top school, that some parents say they would be willing to pay an extra 25 per cent on top of the average home's price tag. That's an extra £74,559 on the typical property, which hikes the purchase price to £372,796. NOT all state schools have catchment areas Parents should do their research before they decide to move to a particular area, however, as not all state schools have catchment areas. Admissions could instead be based on entrance test results, so it is vital to check the school's criteria. Even if a school does have catchment area, living in one doesn't guarantee a child's place in a school. The school could be oversubscribed, or prioritise applicants within the catchment area based on test scores. Catchment areas can also change, so there's no guarantee if you buy a house now that your child will later be admitted to the school of your choosing. And not only could that derail any plans for younger children to attend that school, it could cause your house price to take a tumble when it's time to sell as demand falters. But the fight for a spot in a hot catchment area is doing more than just squeeze the finances of these parents. One in three parents say the stress of not getting the desired catchment led to them considering home schooling. Meanwhile three in ten parents have lost friends in the fierce competition for a place in a top school and one in six have had sleepless nights. The new research shows families would also be willing to uproot and move an average of 31 miles to bag a place in a top-tier school, which is nine miles further than a year ago. > Are you pulling your child out of private school?
