Fast-moving wildfires, fanned by strong winds and scorching summer heat, are sweeping across parts of Greece, France, Spain, and Turkey, killing at least three people and forcing thousands to flee.
In Greece, flames tore across scrub-covered hillsides in the Keratea region, about 25 miles southeast of Athens, on Friday, edging dangerously close to residential areas. Nearly 200 firefighters, aided by water-dropping planes and helicopters, battled the blaze as thick black smoke billowed over the landscape.

On the tourist island of Milos, two Vietnamese visitors died after being swept into the sea by strong winds, the Greek Coastguard confirmed.
France and Spain hit hard
In France, wildfires in the Aude region left an elderly woman dead in her home and injured two others, one critically with severe burns. The fire erupted Tuesday afternoon, quickly spreading through dry terrain.
Across the border in Spain, 15mph winds drove flames through the popular Torre de la Peña beach resort in Cadiz. Bars, restaurants, hotels, and campsites between La Peña and Casas de Porros were evacuated as firefighters struggled to contain the blaze.
Turkey declares disaster zones
Turkey is facing its own crisis, with wildfires threatening its fourth-largest city and prompting the evacuation of more than 3,500 people. Two people have died, and dozens of severe fires have been breaking out daily since late June.
Overnight blazes in the forested mountains around Bursa turned the night sky an ominous red. The flames forced the closure of the Bursa–Ankara highway and prompted evacuations from villages northeast of the city. The government has declared the western provinces of Izmir and Bilecik disaster zones.
A separate fire near Saricaeli village in Canakkale province forced the evacuation of a university campus and an elderly care home. The Dardanelles Strait, a key shipping route, was temporarily closed due to heavy smoke and poor visibility.
Region on edge
Bulgaria and Montenegro are also battling blazes as high temperatures, parched landscapes, and strong winds fuel a dangerous wildfire season across southern Europe.

Typhoon Podul brings no major damage as it crosses Taiwan, heads for China

Taipei, Aug 13 (AP) Typhoon Podul crossed southern Taiwan, where authorities closed schools and government offices as heavy rain threatened more damage to agriculture in the island's southeast. No major damage was reported. The storm hit Taitung county on the east coast shortly after noon, moving across the south of the island at about 36 kilometres per hour. By 5:00 pm (0900 GMT) its centre was just off Taiwan's west coast, churning out into the Taiwan Strait and China, according to the Central Weather Administration. In China, the coastal provinces of Fujian and Guangdong recalled fishing boats to port and evacuated around 15,000 people living near the coast to shelters further inland. Taiwanese media reported one person missing on the east coast. Typhoons like Podul typically hit Taiwan's east coast hard before losing speed and strength as they pass over the Central Mountain Range before continuing toward the Chinese coast. Podul measured 120 kilometres across and was expected to broaden even while losing strength as the storm moved westward. The areas affected were well south of the capital, Taipei, along with Taiwan's main international airport and high-tech industrial base. Around a dozen flights that would have travelled south toward the path of the storm were delayed or cancelled. The counties and cities of Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi, Yunlin, Pingtung and Hualien on the east coast and the island group of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait were taking the brunt of the storm. Along with flooding, typhoons routinely damage fruit and other cash crops and bring landslides through the island's centre. Much of central and southern Taiwan was badly hit by heavy rains in recent weeks that caused severe damage to crops but minimal casualties, while also knocking out electricity to rural areas that took weeks to repair. At least 3 dead, thousands displaced as wildfires rage across southern Europe

Agency: Athens (Greece), Aug 13 (AP) Wildfires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday after a nightlong battle to protect the perimeter of Greece's third-largest city, with at least three more deaths reported in Spain, Turkiye and Albania. Outside the Greek port city of Patras, firefighters struggled to protect homes and agricultural facilities as flames tore through olive groves. As water-dropping planes and helicopters swooped overhead, residents joined the effort, beating back flames with cut branches or dousing them with buckets of water. Firefighting resources were stretched thin in many affected countries as they battled multiple outbreaks following weeks of heat waves and temperature spikes across Mediterranean Europe. Aircraft rotated between blazes on the western Greek mainland, the Patras area and the island of Zakynthos. Athens also sent assistance to neighbouring Albania, joining an international effort to combat dozens of wildfires. An 80-year-old man died in one blaze south of the capital, Tirana, officials said Wednesday. Residents of four villages were evacuated in central Albania near a former army ammunition depot. In the southern Korca district, near the Greek border, explosions were reported from buried World War II-era artillery shells. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed condolences after the death of a firefighting volunteer in the hard-hit Castile and Leon region north of Madrid, where thousands have been displaced by evacuations. The government raised its national emergency response level, preparing additional support for regional authorities overseeing multiple evacuations and highway closures. A forestry worker was also killed on Wednesday while responding to a wildfire in southern Turkiye, officials said. The Forestry Ministry said the worker died in an accident involving a fire truck that left four others injured. Turkiye has been battling severe wildfires since late June. A total of 18 people have been killed, including 10 rescue volunteers and forestry workers who died in July.
