Holomisa says SANDF not in a fit state to defend the country if it is attacked
However, Holomisa said the country was currently not under any threat of being attacked.
South Africa's military conducts regular threat analysis to determine whether the country is at risk of attack from foreign or domestic enemies.
Speaking on the Clement Manyathela Show on 702, Holomisa said the July 2021 unrest and the recent floods in the Eastern Cape "embarrassed" the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

"Soldiers being carried by military buses going to a violent situation, it showed the defence equipment is obsolete. I cannot give another explanation, and if we were to be attacked, yes, we would respond, but I am not that confident about the state of readiness of the SANDF. Let us not mislead the people. I am not here to spin, but I must tell you the truth."
Holomisa said that part of the problem was that the military was not being properly funded.
"Every (defence) minister I can think of, they have been complaining since time immemorial that the defence is declining. How many defence reviews have been produced and the National Treasury has just ignored? They even ignored the president in 2023, who said, the budget of defence must move from 0.57% of the GDP to 1.5% of the GDP."

Her latest defence of Maphwanya's misconduct in Tehran shows she is unfit for office and is causing irreparable harm to South Africa's image. Instead of holding General Maphwanya accountable for overstepping his constitutional mandate, Motshekga endorsed his version of events and declared herself 'satisfied' with his report. By doing so, she has chosen to side with an unelected general who engaged in unsanctioned political diplomacy in Iran. This is a blatant violation of the SANDF Code of Conduct. According to Iranian state media, Maphwanya pledged 'common goals' with Tehran, endorsed its stance on Gaza, and promised deeper strategic ties. Instead of safeguarding South Africa's constitutional and diplomatic interests, she has rubber-stamped conduct that weakens our standing among democratic allies and strengthens ties with authoritarian regimes. Her failure is not just an error of judgment and a failure of leadership. By placing political expedience above accountability, she has sent the message that generals may act as they please without consequence, while ministers will look the other way. This cannot be tolerated in a constitutional democracy. South Africa is already struggling with strained international relations. Now, under Motshekga's watch, our global credibility and national security are being further eroded. Every day she remains in office deepens the damage. President Ramaphosa has a duty as Commander-in-Chief of the SANDF to act decisively. He must hold Motshekga and General Maphwanya accountable, and send a clear signal that South Africa remains committed to constitutional order, civilian control of the military, and respect for democratic values.

EFF slams Ramaphosa's ‘cowardly' reaction to SANDF general's Iran visit
Although South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya's recent visit to Iran has drawn criticism, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has voiced support for the trip. Following the visit, the United States (US) asked South Africa for clarification on its policy, with the government insisting the trip was unauthorised. In response, the EFF slammed the US for its demand, rejecting what it described as the country's arrogance. The party also accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of behaving cowardly in response. The party maintained that South Africa is a sovereign nation free to pursue trade, economic, diplomatic, and military relations with any country. It argued that enemies of the US are not automatically enemies of South Africa. The party is also added that Iran is a member of BRICS. 'This particular engagement with Iran was planned well before current tensions, dating back to 2024, and cannot be dismissed on the basis of temporary geopolitical disputes between the US and Iran,' the party said. The EFF further criticised the US for its relations with Israel and Ukraine, accusing the country of hypocrisy. It pointed out that South Africa has never demanded explanations from the US over its own international dealings. The South African government was not spared from criticism either. The EFF said it was 'equally appalled' by the government's interference in the military's work. In a statement, the party suggested it was clear why Ramaphosa distanced himself from the visit, accusing him of downplaying the engagement with Iran to appease US President Donald Trump. 'This cowardly behaviour is consistent with what he displayed when he was in the Oval Office, unable to assert South Africa's independence in the face of imperial arrogance. Ramaphosa's actions expose a leadership that is timid and incapable of defending the dignity of our nation,' the EFF said. Defence clarifies SANDF Chief's visit to Iran
The South African Department of Defence has clarified details about General Rudzani Maphwanya's official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans authorised General Maphwanya to honour an invitation from Iranian officials, postponing the visit from 2024 to 2025. The Department described the trip as an important step in strengthening international military relations. During the visit, General Maphwanya held bilateral talks with Iranian military leaders on issues of mutual concern. Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, later issued a statement reflecting on the discussions. Maphwanya toured Iran's defence research and training facility Dafoos, where officials reportedly discussed military cooperation with the Middle Eastern nation. General Maphwanya did not address the media in Iran or upon his return to South Africa, underscoring the confidentiality of the talks. Instead, he submitted a detailed report to the Minister, who expressed satisfaction with the outcomes. In a statement on Wednesday, SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini confirmed both the postponement of the visit and the reporting process. 'Authority was granted by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans for the Chief of the SANDF to honour the invitation. Upon his return, the Chief submitted a report to the Minister, given the public interest raised by media coverage,' Dlamini said.
